Dermelect High Maintenance Instant Nail Thickener Review

Good Morning! Today I have a review for you guys! A while back Dermelect sent me their High Maintenance Instant Nail Thickener.

Here is some information on the Dermelect website that describes the product much better than I ever could. I'll give you my experience with it below the photo.

High on shine and long on durability, Dermelect High Maintenance Instant Nail Thickener utilizes protein-peptide technology to instantly thicken your nails up to 50% with a single coat. Add layers of protection to natural nails or top your polish with a long-lasting high shine and protective reinforcement. With the unique strengthening property of the protein peptide ProSina, you will directly apply a form of keratin similar to that which is found naturally in our nails resulting in nails that are more resistant to splitting, breaking and chipping. Fast drying and super glossy, this innovative, thickening treatment contains a UV absorber to protect your polish from yellowing while preventing both light and dark colors from quickly fading. Hands down the most innovative top coat you will ever need.
The ‘green’ formula is DBP, Toluene, and Formaldehyde free.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE TECHNOLOGY: New Zealand wool protein biotechnology is the secret ingredient in a new generation of nail and hand care products launched by Dermelect Cosmeceuticals. Keratin, the main protein in fingernails and skin, diminishes as we age and expose our nails to everyday wear and tear. The peptide ingredient ProSina™ is extracted from wool in a gentle yet powerful process keeping the protein intact maintaining its potency without damaging the amino acids that make it up. The integrity of the extracted peptide (keratin protein) is in a near-perfect state yielding unprecedented age-defying, strengthening and softening properties for the nails.

On the back of the bottle it indicates that you can use High Maintenance either on bare nails or over your polish. I tried it on my right hand on bare nails for a while and didn't love it, unfortunately. It caused peeling on a couple of nails, not all of them though. When that happened I stopped using it that way and decided to use it only as a top coat. As a top coat I love this stuff! It is super shiny and dries pretty fast, not nearly as fast as something like Seche Vite but faster than other non quick dry top coats I've used. I don't know that it made my nails any thicker but it did help them from feeling so flexible. My nails are fairly strong but have a tendency to feel too flexible (for lack of a better way of describing it), when I used High Maintenance as a top coat my nails didn't feel like that. I've also been using it to refresh manicures after a couple of days and it does wonders for that. I've always used Barielle Manicure Extender for that but I prefer this over the Barielle.

Overall I'm not sure if I would pick up another bottle but I am loving this as a top coat. I just don't know that I love it enough to justify the price tag. What do you guys think? Have you tried High Maintenance before?

Dermelect High Maintenance Instant Nail Thickener can be purchased on dermelect.com/ for $16.

  1. Thank you for reviewing this product. My nails tend to be overly-flexible, too (actually *all* of me is that way! LOL), so I don't think I'd like this as a base. And as you said, I don't think I would buy it just as a TC when there are so many other TCs I love that also come with a lower price tag.

  2. Good to know! I'm always looking for something better to strengthen my nails but if this caused peeling I think I'll pass!

It's worth a shot for you if you are trying different products, something that reacted one way on me will not necessarily react the same on you. It might just be something with my body chemistry that caused my problem :)

  4. So I can use this TC and achieve a similar, though more short-term, effect to eating Jell-O two or three times a week for $16...? I think that's a good deal if someone doesn't like Jell-O. Did it make your nails peel or your nail polish peel? Thanks for the review!
