Finger Paints Special Effects Collection Swatches!

Goooood Morning! Today's post is my first 2012 collection to show you guys! I can't believe it's almost 2012, I thought we'd for sure have flying cars and robot maids by now...like the Jetsons. I totally had to stop writing this post for like 15 minutes so I could go watch clips of The Jetsons on youtube haha. Anyway, this is my first 2012 collection I've swatched and OMG what a way to start off, flakies galore!!  I'm kind of wondering why flakies are the hot thing all of a sudden, like were they on clearance at the glitter factory or something so everyone is going to put them out now? I hope it keeps up, I'm such a sucker for them...they make everything just a bit better plus hello...you all saw my flakie-gasm post right? Amazing! Maybe next magnetic stuff can go on clearance so the wallet friendly brands can make a bazillion of those, that would be great!

I have a ton of photos under the cut, complete with these over something other than black! yay!

Asylum is a orange to blueish/purple flakie. It also has some flashes of yellow and green that you can see around the sides of my nails. I was most excited about this one, I don't *think* there is another flakie out that flashes exactly like this but I could be wrong about that (between Nfu Oh, Hits and Ludurana there might be a dupe?). The flakies are a bit sparse, I used 2 coats over black for the photos below.

Here is Asylum over China Glaze Traffic Jam...I LOVED this combo. The berry base really pops the purple in the flake glitter!

Flashy is a yellow, orange and green flakie. We've all seen this one before, it's similar to Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure, Nubar 2010 and Essie Shine Of The Times. If you have any of those you can probably pass on this (unless you are a freak like me and hoard flakies, then you need it). Flakie wise it was a bit sparse compared to something like Essie Shine Of The Times but it's not like you can't just add another layer or 2 and get the same opacity. I used 1 coat of Flashy over black for the photos below.

Here is Flashy over Nubar Baby Sprout, I loved this combo but OMG what a nightmare to try and photograph. It was subtle in real life but not as subtle as it appears in the photo.

Flecked is a bright green to blue flakie. I love this one, I haven't compared them side by side but it looks close to Nails Inc Old Vic and Inglot 204. Good news though...this one is a lot cheaper and the bottle is bigger than either of those, as Charlie Sheen would say...WINNING (sorry, I couldn't resist...who doesn't love cray cray Charlie Sheen??)!! The flakies in this one were a bit more dense than the previous 2 polishes, I think it looks pretty perfect with 1 coat over black!

Here is Flecked over Sephora by OPI Don't Feed The Hand Models. Putting flakies over nudes and whites are my favorite way to wear them...this combo was gorgeous! The flakies stood out but weren't nearly as in your face as they are over black.

Motley is a purple and green flakie, I call this the Barney. Yes, Barney like the big singing dinosaur...if he wore nail polish I bet he'd like this one because it matches his "skin". Anyway, this one was a little on the sparse side as well, I used 1 coat over black for the photos below. After I took these photos I added a second coat and preferred it that way.

Motley over Finger Paints Stunning Stiletto, I bet you'd never guess....I love this combo! The grey base really brought out the cool toned blueish purple in the flakies...gorgeous!

Twisted is the crowned jewel of awesomeness in this collection, the flakies in this one flash a whole rainbow of colors....purple, orange, yellow, green, blue etc... It's like Cult Nails Clairvoyant in a clear base. My easy favorite of the collection and the one I will be buying a back up of if I can ever find these at my local Sallys again. The flakies in Twisted were the most dense out of the 5 polishes you can easily do 1 coat with great flakie coverage...I used 1 coat over black for the photos below.

And since Twisted and Asylum looked similar-ish in the bottle here they are side by side. Clearly not dupes but sometimes it's nice to see things side by side.

Last but not least is Twisted over American Apparel Coney Island. This combo was awesome in person, and hard to photograph. It was very subtle but at the right angle you could see the whole rainbow of pastel looking flakies!

The Special Effects Collection from Finger Paints will be available at Sally Beauty Supply in January. They might have them in the back so if you go in with your sad face and beg maybe they will sell the to you now. Big giant THANK YOU to Lindsey from Sally Beauty for tracking these down for me when my local store wouldn't look in the back for me to see if these were in.

The Special Effects Collection are in store only and exclusive to Sally's, I'm bummed that they aren't online for those of you with no easy access to a store. I hope you can all get them if you want them! They are very affordable, if you have  Sally's card they are $4.99 each...without a Sally's card they go for $5.49 each!

Thanks for the swatches (especially over colors other than black!). You have now confirmed for me that I *NEED* Asylum, Motley and Twisted. So cool!

  12. I JUST saw these at Sally Beauty yesterday. Too bad they are a bit sparse.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Agh, Twisted will be mine! I hope my store gets these in. They sometimes don't get seasonal collections. I love Motley over grey!

    ReplyDelete
  14. So bummed right now Finger Paints isn't sold here. Awesome swatches of some awesome polishes <3.

    ReplyDelete
  15. People on ebay are selling these for U$14 each, it's just ridiculous. I'm brazilian and can't buy on Sally's, so I'll buy some  Nfu Oh flakies =D

    ReplyDelete
  16. I called the Sallys around my area to make sure they had them. The first one I called told me that the collection was their promotional collection for January but they said they would be willing to sell it to me since they had it in already :) I would suggest calling different Sallys to save time & gas!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Glad you were able to track them down!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. wow! I can't believe people are selling them for so much :(

    ReplyDelete
  19. just curious how the flakies are to remove? anything like the glitters?

    ReplyDelete
  20. they are actually really easy to remove, unlike regular glitter! The remove the same way something like a shimmer would!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Loving the swatches over black!

    ReplyDelete
  22. mmmmm asylum. that's what i'm talking about! :)

  23. Hi Jen!

How does Motley compare to the blue/green flakie from HITS you posted a few days ago?

    ReplyDelete
  24. They are gorgeous  default1708 {"method":"validate","params":[],"id":1,"jsonrpc":"2.0"}

    ReplyDelete
  25. I need these in  my life. Until GB comes out with flakies. I LOOOOVE flakies.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hits Twist is closer to Flecked but Twist is in an opaque blue base...these are much more versatile since you can layer them over anything!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I cannot wait to get my hands on all of these!!! Are they in Sally's yet???

    ReplyDelete
  28. Wow! I just picked up Twisted from Sally's today (south FL)  I thought they were all the same but I did not have my glasses.  Might have to go back and pick up one more.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Awww! I want Asylum, Motley and Twisted soooo bad!!! I guess I have to find an ebay store that sells them, otherwise I can never get my hands on them in Germany.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I just called a Sally's & the girl said she didn't think the Special Effects collection is out yet but they aren't allowed to sell anything before January. :( Lame-o.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Wooo this collection is so great!! :D  Beautiful swatches you did here!  My favourites are Motley and Flecked.  I hope that I can find them! :)

    ReplyDelete
  32.  My mom just picked Twisted up for me while she was out at the store.  They went in the back to get it.  So excited!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Love these - I'm obsessed with flakies!  Can't wait to buy some!  Thanks for putting them on black as well as other colors - it's nice to see those combos!
Also, I think Flecked looks a bit more like Nail Inc's Wyndham than Old Vic.  Old Vic seems to be a deeper blue than Flecked where as Wyndham is more aqua/teal.  I can't really make the comparison since I haven't seen Flecked in person, but I thought I'd throw that out there!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I got all except for Flashy, the SA at Sally's got them from the back for me (I think she knows me!). Thanks for showing swatches over different colors! :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I was only planning on buying Twisted, but thanks to you, now I need Flecked and Asylum ;D

    ReplyDelete
  36. Maybe I haven't been collecting polishes long enough, but these look too much alike for me to justify purchasing all of them...actually I'm content with Essie Shine of the Times as far as this genre goes! They're pretty though.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thanks for the amazing post! I want them all! I'm so glad flakies are the new crackle.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Me too, I am so tired of crackle!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'll have to look up Wyndham swatches, I didn't pick that Nails Inc set up! Thanks for the suggestion :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. When I saw your flackie-gasim post I went to my local Sally's to collect all five Im new to the polish world and I don't have any flakies so I wanted them all. The lady was nice enough to go get them out of the back for me she also gave me a free wallet I guess they had a special buy 3 finger paints get a free wallet!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Love these! Can't wait to buy them.

    ReplyDelete
  42. any idea how an aussie could get their hands on these? I die!

    ReplyDelete
  43. So need. I need to head to Sally's soon!  I am lovin' Shine Of The Times and am glad there are more flakies to choose from now!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think your only ways would be via ebay or finding someone in the US with access to a Sally's who will mail you a set

    ReplyDelete
  45. nice! that's an awesome deal!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Asylum is GORGEOUS!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Well if they are supposed to be a January release then I'm sure they will *eventually* be online at Sally's. Right now the only place I can find them is *e*bay and it's CRAZY prices. I *think* the only one I really really want is Twisted. I MUST do a Flakiegasm mani! lol Maybe I'll do one with what I have for NYE hmmmm.

    ReplyDelete
  48. omg I can't wait for these!!!  I just discovered a Sally within WALKING distance of my apt!  They said they didn't have them yet, but I'm going to keep asking every few days until they finally relent!  Thank you so much for posting about flakies!!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Nope, they will not be online. They are in store only per Sally Beauty PR :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. I LOVE what a thorough job Finger Paints has done with the flakie variations! But...I must say I'm a bit apprehensive to get shell out the cash for the whole collection. Among my polishes, Finger Paints is the one that seems to have the least logevity over the years in consistency. Plus, if this is the 2012 trend maybe there will be even bigger, badder flakie options in our future!! I'd hate to miss out though...what's a girl to do?

    ReplyDelete
  51. lol I understand that! I do know of a another brand coming out with some that are slightly different very soon but I'm really interested to see if the big brands like OPI & China Glaze do even more amazing flakies!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Definitely need Motley and Twisted!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hi
I think these are great but with all the layers can I ask how you go about drying all these layers?

    ReplyDelete
  54. I use a quick drying top coat like Seche Vite or Sally Hansen Insta Dri

    ReplyDelete
  55. I went to Sally's yesterday and bought Motley and Twisted.  I had Flecked in my hands too, but ended up putting it back for some other nail junkie!  I'm wearing Motley (2 coats) over Nicole by OPI Razzle Dazzle and I am IN LOVE!!!  Mine shines very blue...a gorgeous electric blue, which I love.  I think I'm going to have to go back for Flecked because I LOVE green!!!  These are amazing flakies!!!

  56. I went to Sally's on Wednesday and she said they'd probably be out before the 1st.  So, I went back today and found that they weren't out yet :(  Alas at the checkout when the same lady asked if I found everything I said "no, what I was looking for isn't out yet".  I then told her what it was and she said "I see that twinkle in your eye, do you want me to go dig around in the back for them"?  Of course I said yes!  I came home with Twisted and Asylum!  I can't wait to use them.  I'm kind of wishing I'd gotten Motley but perhaps another time.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I got Twisted a couple of days before Christmas by asking the very nice clerk at Sally's and she got it out of the back.  Why oh why didn't Finger Paints want these sold for Christmas gift-giving?  What a mystery.  At any rate, I've swatched it over various colors and the darker, the better (no surprise there), although I usually prefer lighter nail polish colors on my older hands.  Twisted over a dark purple is very pretty.

    ReplyDelete
  58. OMG, I'm seriously speechless.. Why the H.. do I live in Norway? I need these :-( My nailpolish collection needs these! I'll try to stop crying now, and try to get some friends overseas and have them buy these beauties for me! That it gorgeous, soo gorgeous!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Exactly. If OPI and China Glaze are getting on this boat, they 2012 is gonna rock the party. Plus, on the low-end, usually I am willing to sacrifice quality so long as it's cheap. i.e. if Sally Hansen comes out with flakies....oh the possibilities! However, Finger Paints is kind of right in the middle.  Who are we kidding though? I got a Sally's gift card for Christmas. hahah

    ReplyDelete
  60. I loooove these sets ! The Asylum one really reminds me of the Lady Gaga x Deborah Lippman Edge of Glory set! Except a bit sparser...if that's a word

    ReplyDelete
  61. Just bought Twisted and Motley and I am IN LOVE with these!!! More than I thought I would be. Thanks for the Beautiful Swatches!!!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Thanks for the swatches! I just went to my local Sally's and bought all of them!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Does anybody want to buy these and ship them to the UK for me? Seriously thou, I could do a swap package for anything I can buy here!? I am rather desperate to get my hands on Motley especially!

    Helen.x

    ReplyDelete
  64. got Motley and Flashy...I was in Sally's for half an hour deciding which ones..they had them all, but my budget doesn't allow for them all =[ i found that layering the 2 i picked makes them almost identical to Twisted, so I technically got three ^.^

    ReplyDelete
  65. i WORK at sally's and didnt get a chance to grab any of them.  we sold out before we even put them out jan 1.  note to all fanatics...if you know sally's is getting a collection in soon...dont be afraid to ask if we have it in the back.  unlike alot of other stores...if we have it in the back...we will more than likely be happy to grab it for you...even if its not technically out yet.

they are online! i bought mine all in store, but just checked today, and there they were.

    ReplyDelete
  67. wow! I was told directly by their PR that these would not be online...that is great that they are! Thanks for the link!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I'm not a big flakie fan, but I had to try one of these out. I love love love Twisted. I'm currently wearing it over Essie Brooch the Subject.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I went to my local Sally's the other day and they only had Flecked and Flashy.  I already have Shine of the Times so I picked up Flecked.  I really felt like I needed Twisted so I went to another Sally's and they had everyone out (their display was full) except Twisted.  I asked the girl working if they had more and she found it for me! I bought Twisted and Asylum! I was so excited :)

  70. i am sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo disappointed, i live in the netherlands and we didnt have a sally's here, the nailpolish isnt available at the sallys webstore. I looked on ebay and i fell over from my chair, cant believe the prices................ is there maybe anyone around who is willing to send a nailaholic 2 bottles of this awesome nailpolish? I wil pay but not the triple price of the storeprice......

    ReplyDelete
  71. I'm so sad I didn't read your entire post, I was so excited about the polish, I immediately went online and ordered Motley from ebay and stupidly paid $12 for it, but i love it anyway, I'm wearing 2 coats of it over a navy blue.

    ReplyDelete
  72. OMG! they look awesome! can i still find these at sally? how much are they?..
