Orly Spring 2012 Cool Romance Collection Swatches

Hi guys! Are we Spring collection-ed out yet? Almost? I hope not yet because I have another one for you today! This one is Orly's Cool Romance Collection! I haven't heard a ton about this collection, in fact everything I did hear about it said "out in January" and well, January came and went and I never saw it out anywhere. I'm glad I was able to grab it at ISSE this past weekend, it's a beautiful collection!

Click the read more button below for swatches & reviews of each shade!

Artificial Sweetener is a light pink with a subtle silvery shimmer. I almost didn't get this one, it didn't look like much in the bottle but once it was on the nail it's beautiful! Reminds me a bit of OPI's Pedal Faster Suzi but it's much softer looking and with a lot less obvious shimmer. The formula was nice, a little thick but easy to apply. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

For anyone wondering, this was bought solely for the name since I didn't love it in the bottle. No Doubt is pretty much my favorite thing since sliced bread and my favorite song of theirs is called Artificial Sweetener. I have music notes going around my wrist that are a line from that song!

Faint of Heart is a light brown/grey with a really interesting finish. This shade is what I like to call "donkey grey", sometimes it looks brown, sometimes grey. I didn't notice in the bottle but the finish on this is very different and unusual. It's not flat creme but it's not a shimmer. I don't even know how to describe it...reminds me a bit of Misa Grey Matters but it isn't as noticeable as it was with that polish. To see what the heck I'm talking about please look at the third photo below lol! The formula on this one was also a little thick but easy to apply...I used 2 coats!

Jealous, Much? is a light minty green. Original? Nope but I still love it! The formula was just okay, it was on the streaky side but I kind of expected that. I used 3 coats to even everything out!

Shade

Prelude To A Kiss is a peachy creme! Another beautiful peach for spring...I am a fan! The formula was just okay...I'm calling it a careful 2 coater. It was a little bit streaky but I did a thick-ish second coat and all was well!

Shade

Since it was requested here is Prelude To A Kiss vs Essie A Crewed Interest. I used 2 coats for the Orly and 3 for the Essie. Color wise almost spot on here, the Essie is a touch darker but I don't think regular folks would even notice the difference. Formula wise the Orly is better...it's also cheaper and the bottle is bigger...I think it's the winner all around!

Steel Your Heart is a metallic steel grey. meh...I'm sorry, I just don't like shades like this. I try really hard to love them (as you can tell since I buy them over and over) but I just can't do it. The brush strokes drive me crazy. It also feels SO out of place in this collection...like they needed a 6th polish and just threw this in because it was laying around somewhere. Formula wise it was on the thick side but it was easy to apply, I used 2 coats.

You're Blushing is a light purple taupe. I feel like I've got this polish a billion times over but I love it every time. Purplish taupe polishes like this are so flattering and easy to wear. The formula on this was seriously flawless, almost a 1 coater!

Overall I do like this collection, a lot of the shades feel done but they are ones that I always like. My favorites are Artificial Sweetener, Faint of Heart and Prelude To A Kiss.

Availability wise I have no idea when these will be in stores like Ulta or Sally Beauty...I would guess sometime in February but I don't know an exact date! I tried to ask at the Orly booth at ISSE but they were so crazy over there at the time that she couldn't answer me :(

  1. Spring collections to me are the most boring, I'm not a pastel kind of girl. The gunmetal one looks out of place but interesting but the fact that it's streaky is a total buzzkill. I wish spring collections were more about bright colors, afterall the sun does come out after a long time and everything is green and yellow and pretty. But oh well! I've never tried Orly, is it 3-free?

  2. I was going to but Essie Crewed interest, but now I see prelude to a kiss and looks better! And maybe Artificial sweetener too, instead of pedal faster suzi (i don´t know, i´m an opi fan)... thanks for the swatches!

  6. Could you please make a comparison between this green one and the new green one from the essie collection if you own that one?? Because i can't decide which one to buy, since they look so similar.

  10. Pretty collection!  I feel like I've seen all of these colors before though.  Probably won't stop me from getting a few though, lol.

  11. They're all very pretty shades. And I have to admit, when I first saw that the name of the first one was Artificial Sweetener the first thing that came to mind was the No Doubt song too. I think I need that color just because of that.

  14. They aren't really very similar at all, I reviewed that green here: http://www.thepolishaholic.com/2012/01/essie-spring-2012-navigate-her.html if you want to go back and look...maybe open that post and this post in separate tabs so you can see them next to each other?

  15. I agree but there are so many bright options out between China Glaze Electropop and Nubar Jellybeans that I think it's nice to have some muted options also!

    Orly is 3 free!

  19. They're all beauties except for Steel Your Heart! It's definitely out of place (who ever thought it went in this collection?) and I hate that finish. No frosties for me! Now I need to decide if I can be patient and wait for Prelude to a Kiss or if I have to go ahead and buy the Essie...

  22. Haha, I disliked them all except from Steel you heart, and scrolled right down to it, skipping the pastels. Imagine my surprise when I then read your review...

  23. Love the No Doubt story and I always love how you show the different nuances of the shades up close! So enjoy your photos :) I actually like Steel Your Heart, I'm an odd one!

  24. I will be picking up Jealous, Much and Prelude to a Kiss, I LOVE these colors!!!

  25. I think I only like the pink one, but not so much to get it at full-price. Thanks for the swatches. This helped me immensely!

  26. Ok, I think this is a collection I can skip this Spring. I am not into pastel colors. And I have never heard about this collection until I read about ISSE on your blog?!

  27. I actually like most of the colours in this collection! Thanks for the swatches. They are perfect :)

  29. Hi, this is not related, but where can one find the new hunger games polishes htat are coming out soon? Online... Instore...?

  30. They aren't out until March, as far as I know they will be available all the usual places that China Glaze is sold (Ulta, Sally Beauty etc...)

  31. These are really quite pretty.  I heard somewhere that for brushstrokey polishes, that if you sponge on the last coat, and use top coat, it looks a lot better smoother & not so brushstrokey.  Haven't gotten around to trying it though, because like you, I don't care for brushstrokes too much, & don't have any lying around to try this technique with!  If you get the chance, try it & show us :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. That's sounds like way more work than I'm willing to put in on a polish I don't love lol! It might work though!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I love them all! Gorgeous, they are so appealing! The minty, the taupes, the pink sweetener, I crave them! Please, tell me, does Steel Your Heart have a similar formula to Sea Gurl? Sea Gurl shows brush strokes on swatches, but it doesn't look bushstroky irl and I really like it, this one looks like a steel version of it, so I'd like to get it if the brush strokes are not that prominent irl?

  34. omgsh loove these colors! i especially love the finish of faint of heart. i definitely want to get some! these could be my first orly polishes! lol i hate the brush strokey finish of steel your heart! :( i wish there was a way around that! this week i painted my nails OPI's sahara sapphire and it definitely comes out the same! but still a nice color. haha

  35. They are noticeable to me in person but I'm crazy about my nails and brushstrokes bug me lol...it might not be noticeable to the point that you wouldn't like it

    ReplyDelete
  36. I might have to pick up the gray and the peach. Very pretty :)

  37. Nothing here I need or cannot pass by. Odd - Jan release? I also have not seen it and been in Sally's 2X's.

  40. Hi! Love your swatches :) I was wondering, would there be a possible dupe of Orly's Jealous, Much? Is it any similar to China Glaze's Re-freshmint or Revlon's Minted? If you could do a comparison that would be great. Thank you!

So these cremes are just ok to me, but the highlight of this post was you calling the color "donkey grey". That is a hilarious description!
