China Glaze Under The Boardwalk, Version 2?

Hi guys, quick post for today. Yesterday when I posted my picks from the China Glaze Summer Neons Collection a few people commented that their bottle of  Under The Boardwalk was much more purple than my photos looked. At first I thought maybe it was just a case of neons being a pain to photograph but I decided to take a trip to Sally's and wouldn't you know...the bottle of Under The Boardwalk was completely different than the bottle I had and swatched. I bought the more purple version so I could show you guys!

I posted a photo of these 2 bottles next to each other yesterday on my Facebook and a couple other bloggers said that they have picked up 2 versions also. Prior to that I thought I just had a mislabeled bottle or something along those lines. I guess it's more of a bad quality control issue somewhere along the way which led to 2 very different polishes. Always weird when that happens! I have to say, I do like both versions so I don't really mind this too much! To see the 2 Under The Boardwalk's side by side scroll down to the end of the post!

I used 2 coats of this version of Under The Boardwalk for the photos below. The formula was pretty good, a bit thick but no application issues!

Shade

Here are the 2 bottles side by side, the bottle I bought yesterday is on the left and the other bottle I have that was swatched in my post yesterday is on the right!

Also, here are both versions in my swatches put side by side!

So what do you guys think...does it bug you when stuff like this happens? Which version of Under The Boardwalk do you have?

*The more pink version of Under The Boardwalk was sent for review. The purple version was purchased by me!*

  1. I like them both but I think that I prefer the more pink one. Thanks for posting!

  2. That is so bizarre but I'm glad you posted this! It seems like all bloggers who wee sent that color received the one on the right, so when I purchased it from Sally's, I was so surprised that it was actually the color on the left. I'd love the one on the right!

  3. Wow, they are very different! How weird! You would think they'd be more consistent...

  4. I love them both and wouldn't really be disappointed at all! But I have to say to China Glaze (one of my fav companies) what a huge screw up! What happened to make such a huge colour change? Does anyone know how to ask them?

  5. At least both of these are quite pretty! :D

  6. Stuff like that REALLY bugs me. Also when the name of an old (discontinued) polish is re-used... ugh! But since you like both I guess it's not THAT bad :)

  7.  How weird! I don't have UTBW, but I think I prefer the more purple version. ^^

  8. Wow, those are seriously different... I'm not sure which I like more, but that's really annoying.

  9. THAT IS VERY ANNOYING!

Don't have any of those, but prefer the purple one, I believe that is the "right" one.

  10. It's interesting that the printing of the volume differs between the bottles!?

  11. I definitely own the more purple version, but it's crazy how different the two are! When you mentioned yesterday that there were two versions I had no idea! It's almost enough to consider them two different polishes.

  12. I skipped this one and the blue cream when I got them the other day.  After seeing the swatches I decided it wasn't one I absolutely had to have in my collection.  But of course after seeing your update and how purple the other version is, I now think I need it and will not sleep until I find it!

  13. Woah! What a diferences! They are practically 2 different polishes!

  14. ohh wow huge diff! i like the more purpley one - thanks for posting this. Guess I better find it myself rather than ordering it.

  15. As far is I can tell from the pictures I have the more purple one on the left and I prefer this over the other version. Maybe those sent to bloggers for review differ in formulation?!

Hmm, I would have thought the lighter one was a fake? But I guess mistakes happen with polish as well ;) I actually like the lighter one better, I think :) I don't have either, though, because I've seen the dark version in swatches and thought it wasn't for me.

  17. I like the more purple version. I think it can be a pain when stuff like this happens. Because if someone asks about your polish then goes to buy and it's completely different, it can be a hassle

  18. This drives me crazy! Mostly because sometimes both colors are great. I was at Ulta a few weeks ago and they had 2 bottles of the same polish and they were completely different. It was an Essie shade and one had the lilac tone and the other was a milky shade that was equally as pretty. Brands need to be more careful with their quality, but sometimes it is to our benefit,; two different colors, same name! :)

  19. Wow! That's quite a difference! Mine is the pinker one.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I don't have either, but I kinda like the "wrong" one better.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I like the pink one! :) Do you use top coat when you do swatches?

A new blogger and follower here. :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Lol i like them both actually

    ReplyDelete
  23. I prefer the swatch in the right, and YES it bugs me when this happens!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I've read that this can happen with neon blue pigment which isn't very shelf-stable, and the wrong pH can make it turn faster? Idk, chemistry was never my forte. Hopefully someone else knows more. :/

    ReplyDelete
  25. hmm maybe heat from transport effected it? I really like the lighter one more and it fits into the collection better. The darker one, seems a little TOO dark to fit in with the collection.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I've gotta say I still prefer the "wrong one".  Thanks so much for your quick follow up on this!  I'll be keeping an eye out for the pinker version. ;)

  27. I love the purple one, reminds me of a shiny Leighton Denny Maroon Me Knot!

I have had this with OPI That's Berry Daring, my bottle is red others are pink!

I dont like when this happens :( I feel like its a quality control mistake that should not have happened with a big professional company like China Glaze. They should be tested and checked thoroughly before being shipped out. The reason why is bugs me is because I have the more purple one.. but I WANT the more pink one!!! Now I have got to go hunt one down hahahaha
Thank you for this post though, I really really wanted to see them side by side :]

  29. I think the version that was sent to you for review is maybe not a batch mix up as much as it might have been a wrong labeling issue. EVERY swatch I have seen for Under The Boardwalk shows it as the purple one - including bloggers who received it with the others in this collection for review. Also the description for Under the Boardwalk (both what Scrangie described) as well as how CG describes it, all reference the purple. The pink one you had reminds me of Traffic Jam from last fall's Metro collection by CG, but maybe your  pink is more pink/brighter than Traffic Jam - I know I have seen a CG shade close to your pink - just not off the top of my head, coming up with a name for it. Sure would be fun to sit down with yours and line up the zillion and one bright pink creams I have (CG and non), to see what I have that it's close to. Oddly your pink is looking darker in the bottle than on the nails - as you know, it's usually the opposite of that. Did your pink UTB dry matte finish like the rest do in this collection?

  30.  I also much prefer the purple one too!

    ReplyDelete
  31. both of them look nice, but I prefer the purple one better. it's so weird!

    ReplyDelete
  32. As I mentioned 2 other bloggers also have this polish in the same 2 shades. 1 bought both variations at at the same store in the same trip. I don't believe it's a labeling issue. These did not dry to a matte finish for me, they were a little dull but not dull enough for me to consider it satin matte

  33. I like the "wrong" one too, haha! I saw over at Let Them Have Polish the same color, so I guess it has happened to a lot of people...I'm thinking about going and hunting it down at a Sally's here, lol. It's cute!

  34. I received a colour by CG for review, it was labelled Beach Cruise-r, but every swatch I'd seen of it made me confused and I wasn't convinced! Turned out I had Life's A beach, the bottle was incorrectly labelled! Did not like that at all!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hell, I like both. But I wish it was just another shade so I won't be confused. Argh!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I have the pinkier version as well. Mine also came from PR. I like the Purply version too though. I really like both. Im a sucker for berryish tones.

  37. I'm surprised that the differences in the bottles, ie the printing of the labeling, does not strike a chord with anyone else. In Australia I have to order most of my polishes like this one from online retailers, they just aren't easily found in local shops. My recent CG bottles are a mix of the two labels shown here, the small font for the volume but the longer description on the last line and were made in the USA. Does anyone know if labeling changes, and for what reason? I would expect over time minor changes but not two different ones from the same collection!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I wonder about the labeling too, I actually didn't notice it until I was cropping that photo of the 2 bottles. It's one thing for it to change over time but 2 bottles in the same collection having different looking lettering on the bottles is a bit strange

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think it's really annoying! In a business like this, you'd think this would be something that QC or QA would catch this! I like both the colors, but I find myself annoyed when this happens. It's confusing for the consumer-- obviously mistakes happen, but if there is a large batch of the wrong colored polish out there it's a bummer if you were looking the more purple one. The labeling differences on the bottle is weird too.

    ReplyDelete
  40. It depends on the polish, I usually mention in the post if I do

    ReplyDelete
  41. i prefer the pink one! but that's really annoying! :S

    ReplyDelete
  42. Love both these colors! :) GORGEOUS!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wow, that's a huge difference! I have the pinker version judging by these pictures and I must admit I am very glad about it!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I've got the more purple version. I bought it after I saw the first swatch and was kind of disappointed, but now that i've been wearing it all weekend, I absolutely love it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I would like to have both versions, but only the second one was available.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm glad you posted this.  When I was viewing all the promo swatches that bloggers posted from PR, I thought I wasn't going to get this color cuz I just didn't need another magenta.  Imagine my surprise when I got to the store and the color was Purple!!!  I thought how in the world could every swatch be off...and knew there had to be something else to the story.  Now I get it.  The color ya'll received is just plain different than  the one on the shelves.

  47. I got the version on the left side, but I would have loved getting the one on the right side better.

I want the more pink one.. it looks so nice :-)

great site  btw I love it!

  49. I have been looking for the pink one. All I can find is the purple.

  50. OMG I have a friend in NYC right now (I'm in London) and I gave her a shopping list! LOL most of the Neons were on it!  THanks for your FAB website!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I live overseas so the only way I can get these is to order them which makes it impossible to control which colour I end up with. I really like the purple one but it would be nice to have both. I'm kind of unimpressed with CG for having such poor quality control.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Sorry bout that lol I just had my toe done in the more purple color with a matching glitter on top, and the more berry color had a different name though. It looks identical though!

    ReplyDelete
  53. WOW i really can't believe this. i honestly am sort of pissed when something like this happens *cough, cough* my private jet *cough* i like both versions from looking at your photos but not quite sure which one i have haha. BOO!

    ReplyDelete
  54. that is so annoying! What bad QC. This is the next one I plan on getting, and I definitely want the purple. How frustrating!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I just ordered this color! I'm hoping for the pinker version because that purple tone doesn't work well on my skin =( here's to hoping!

  56. I just ordered this color! I'm hoping for the pinker version because that purple tone doesn't work well on my skin =( here's to hoping!

    ReplyDelete
  57. My friend bought the more purple one as a gift to get me addicted to china glaze and not just OPI. Now seeing how 'bad' the QC is, I think it's kind of an irony lol. Thank you so much for the comparison!!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Mine has changed colour. :O It was a beautiful, deep purple when I got it. Now it's bright pink! FFS! I only got to wear it once before this happened and even then it wasn't in a full mani. I'm so pissed off right now.

I don't know if this is because there's a very small amount of light getting into my polish drawer. It's not completely dark in there but I sure as hell had thought it's dark enough.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I have to add that the other polishes in the same drawer are fine except for one cheap-ass magnetic polish that turned from dark blue to black. Since the others are fine, it can't be only the small amount of light getting in there. There must be something wrong with these two.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I have the pink one and didn't even know there was a purple version! I was wearing it the other day and was wondering why it looked so much lighter than the swatches I've seen :P I don't really mind the two colors, but having to hunt for a "correct" color under the same name as a "
wrong" one is more a pain than anything else. Thanks for posting this!
