Saturday Spam: Indie Edition

Happy weekend!! Anyone have any plans this weekend? I'm going to see the Beach Boys tomorrow! I love the Beach Boys, I saw them live once like 20 years ago (not even exaggerating, now I feel old). I'm sure the concert will be amazing, and I'm secretly hoping Uncle Jesse John Stamos will randomly be there singing with them haha!

Today I have another massive Indie spam for you guys. This post is huuuuuuuuuuuuuge, 28 polishes in total! I have a ton of brands this time including Whimsical Ideas by Pam, Nail Venturous, Dollish Polish, Lynnderella, Once Upon A Polish and a few more brands! Also, lots of matte glitter...guys I am OBSESSED with matte glitter...I need all the polishes that have it. I don't know why I am so in love with it, maybe because it's such a weird thing...glitter that doesn't sparkle.

Just a warning that there are like 70 pictures after the cut so it might take forever to load depending on your internet connection...it's worth the wait (if there is one!) . Where to buy each polish will be listed at the end of the post.

To see swatches of all the pretty polishes click the read more button below...you may want to grab a snack first.

Alta Costura Vernis Electric Eyes, 1 coat over FingerPaints Sexy Sundress. Matte glitter! The purple glitter in this is also diamond shaped! Both photos below are with top coat and in direct sunlight!

Alta Costura Vernis Sweet Tooth, 1 coat over FingerPaints Beach Bound. This was very thick but it's absolutely packed with glitter. Photos below are with top coat, the first 2 are in direct sunlight and the 3rd is in the shade.

Alta Costura Vernis Zapped, 1 coat over Barry M Denim. I love this one but it's hard to find a good base color for it since the mix of matte glitter is a bit crazy (crazy in an awesome way) Photos below are with top coat and both are in direct sunlight.

CrowsToes Cheshire, 1 coat over Jessica Sufer Boyz 'n Berry. I love this mix of glitter but it was very thick and difficult to apply. The photos below are with top coat, the first photo is in the direct sun and the second is in the shade.

Darling Diva Polish BzzBzz, 2 coats over Megan Miller Caribbean. I love this mix of glitter, however this was awful to apply. It was nearly impossible to get any glitter on the brush...I had to fish it out of the bottle and try to apply it that way...then the base was all gloopy all over my nails. Even after top coat my nails were lumpy looking because of the base of the glitter. It was a trainwreck. Again, I love the glitter combo but I feel like this polish was a waste of my money since I will literally never bother going through that hassle to wear it again :(

I did use top coat for the photos below, the first photo is in direct sunlight and the second is in the shade.

Darling Diva Polish Twilight Sparkle, 2 coats over Zoya Venus. I had similar problems as above, almost impossible to get any of the big glitter on the brush. I do like this one better than BzzBzz but I'm still not in love. I did use top coat for the photos below, first photo is in direct sunlight...second is in the shade.

Dollish Polish A Bad Case of Blue Balls. I used 2 coats of this on it's own for the photos below. This polish is SO PRETTY, kudos to Dolly for making an awesome polish that isn't glitter...I feel like we don't see than a lot from the indies. The formula was a bit on the thick side but I didn't have any problems applying it. The first photo below is in direct sunlight and the second is in the shade.

Dollish Polish Check Out Those Sweaterpuffs. This one is also 2 coats on it's own. The formula was a bit thick but again, easy to apply. Unfortunately this is pretty fug on my skin tone but I bet it would look great on someone who has a darker skin tone than I do! The first photo below is in the sun, the second is in the shade.

Dollish May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor, 1 coat over Zoya Ivy. This was pretty opaque on it's own, you probably don't need undies for it! Both photos below are in the shade!

p.s. do you like how there was like 1 random piece of blue glitter in probably the whole bottle and I managed to get it on my nails. Go me!

Elemental Styles Ar-gon With The Wind, 1 coat over Zoya Yummy. This was a bit gooey so you have to be patient with it while applying it...it's worth the hassle though, I love this polish! The first photo below is in the shade, the second is in the sun!

Elemental Styles Xenon Warrior Princess, 1 coat over Pixi Paradise Pink. The formula on this was a lot like the polish above but again...I love it! There is fine matte pink glitter in here that is awesome, but a little hard to see over the base color I used. The first photo below is in the sun, the second is in the shade!

Does the name of that polish make anyone else want to watch Zenon? Just me? I miss when Disney made awesomely awful movies like that.

Lac Attack Hell on Heels, 2 coats over Barry M Cappucino. Multi colored matte glitter, be still my heart. Both photos below are in direct sunlight and with a couple coats of top coat!

I've had Hell on Hells on  over black for nearly a week now...color me impressed it wears like iron! I haven't had any chips at all!

Lynnderella Gotta Love Brains, 2 coats over China Glaze Pelican Gray. Meh, probably my least favorite Lynnderella...there is a lot of big glitter in here that I love but I can never get it out of the bottle. The first photo below is in the sun, the second is in the shade.

Lynnderella Lovey Dovey, 1 coat over China Glaze Pelican Gray. This was a requested combo...and I loooove it! Both photos below are in the sun.

Nail Venturous A Dash Of Princess, 2 coats over Jessica Strawberry Shake It. This was a bit difficult to apply...you have to dab on the glitter after you fish the big pieces out of the bottle. Also all the glitter in my bottle sinks to the bottom....if you get this be ready to shake it for about 5 minutes before applying it to get the glitter off the bottom. I do love the mix of glitter and will definitely be wearing this a lot! The first photo below is in direct sunlight, the second is in the shade.

Nail Venturous Humble Bee, 1 coat over Barry M Black Multi Glitter. FINALLY! I thought I'd never get this polish but I finally managed to snag a bottle when Ninja Polish put up inventory. Good news, it's as awesome as I imagined. It was on the thick side and was a little gooey so I'd recommend layering it even though it can be opaque on it's own. Both photos below are with top coat and in direct sunlight.

Nail Venturous Orange You Unique, 1 coat over Jessica Tangerine Dreamz. I love this mix of matte glitter, I just kept staring at my nails when I wore this! I did use top coat for the photos, the first 2 photos are in direct sunlight and the 3rd is in the shade.

Nerd Lacquer Scully, 1 coat over Borghese Almondine. Sadly as you might know Amanda (who made Nerd Lacquer) has closed up shop...not really sure what happened or why. This polish was a gift from my love Kirsten from Glitta Gloves so I wanted to show it! Both photos below are in the sun.

Once Upon A Polish Poison Apple, 1 coat over Glitter Gal Transitions Soft Red (which was over black). Red square glitter, I am a fan. The formula was a little troublesome. It was very thick and a bit hard to apply. This is one you have to carefully dab on. Both photos below are in the shade.

Once Upon A Polish Scuttle, 1 coat over Zoya Trixie. This can definitely be worn on it's own...I didn't realize how opaque it was until I started applying it. The formula was a bit on the thick side but I didn't have any problems with application. The first photo below is in the sun, the second is in the shade.

Pretty & Polished Hello Dolly, 1 coat over Zoya Meadow. My bottle of this is a mini, which is why I'm holding a top coat bottle :) The first photo below is in the sun, the second is in the shade.

Pretty & Polished The Amazing Technicolor Top Coat, over Zoya Lola. I had HIGH  hopes for this but I couldn't get any of the good glitter out of the bottle...except for 1 heart you can see on my pinky nail. Glad I bought the mini of this because I am disappoint, son. My bottle of this is a mini, which is why I'm holding a top coat bottle. The first 2 photos are in the sun, the 3rd is in the shade.

Whimsical Ideas by Pam Hatched, 1 coat over Megan Miller Collection Lemon Ice. I love this polish, I don't need to say anything else :)

The first photo below is in the sun, the second is in the shade.

Whimsical Ideas by Pam I Believe in Fairies, over FingerPaints To-Teally Hot. This was so pretty in the sun, I don't think the photo is doing it any justice. The stars weren't too difficult to get out...I got at least 1 on each nail without having to fish them out or place them on the nail. The first photo below is in direct sunlight, the second is in the shade.

Whimsical Ideas by Pam Kee-Wee. I used 2 1/2 coats on it's own for this one. I say 2 1/2 because most nails only needed 2 coats and a couple just needed a very very thin 3rd coat to reach the opacity I liked. The first photo below is in the sun, the second is in the shade.I feel like pictures aren't doing this justice either, it's has gorgeous fine blue glitter in it that is so beautiful and unexpected!

Whimsical Ideas by Pam Kitty Glitter, 1 coat over Barry M Nude. I love this polish but kind of hate my combo, fail. I think this would be awesome over a light blue...next time I wear it that's how I'll layer it! The first photo below is in the sun, the second is in the shade.

Whimsical Ideas by Pam Saturday Morning Cartoons, 1 coat over Dollish Polish A Bad Case of Blue Balls. Love this glitter, love this combo....it was so glowy and awesome! The polish was a bit thick but look at the glitter payoff! Both photos below are in the shade!

Sorry about the slightly blurry pics, my camera couldn't handle the awesome

Wonder Beauty Products Hippie Fest, 1 coat over FingerPaints Flip Flop Fuschia. Where do I start guys, I lusted after this polish and waited and waited for her to put it in bottle form (she sells her polish in jars normally) My bottle arrived looking nothing like it should, I've put a picture of how the polish should look under my swatch. The polish should be blue, green, yellow, pink and purple flakes of glitter in a clear base. My bottle was tinted pink and only contains blue and silver flakes of glitter along with fine gold glitter.

I emailed the seller, and she said that the glitter must be bleeding more than normal. Now, I love indies (obviously) but when things like this happen it makes me question why I am spending so much money on something that could potentially be nothing like it should. I don't know if maybe the seller doesn't have time to properly test glitters for bleeding or what but this was extremely disappointing to get in the mail after looking forward to the polish for so long.

I do want to mention that the seller was very nice when I contacted her, she offered to replace the bottle. I ended up taking a refund since I felt like the new bottle would probably be just as bad if the glitter is bleeding this badly.

sorry for the rant :(

Here is my bottle and the polish on a sheet of paper:

  1. I love all the indie polishes...but after reading through ALL of that...the only thing I want to do is go watch Zenon. I agree, Disney needs to start making awesomely awful movies again haha. And I'm also in the mood for matte glitter now. Welp, time to make my debit card suffer a bit. Thanks for this, happy Saturday! :D

  5. Oh wow, what an AWESOME post! Thank you for doing all these swatches and reviewing each of them. I'm a fan of indie polishes, but I don't buy them often because they're expensive (especially with the shipping cost since I live outside the US). When I splurge however, I do hope that I'll get nice bottles of polishes (no bleeding glitters, etc). So I'm happy if people put up reviews, like this one right here! So, thank you! :) :) :)

I love them all - but most importantly I am jealous your going to see the beach boys! I love them too :)

  9. I got a bottle from LaceyLousNailStockpile, I believe that is the daughter of 'Wonder Beauty Products'. I ordered Whimsy Petals. My first jar bled orange. She sent me a replacement weeks (like...4) later. The second jar bled a charcoal color. I was so confused about where BLACK came from, and frustrated by the whole thing I gave up. I didn't ask for a replacement and I would probably never order again, sorry to hear you had the same experience. FWIW: This whole post rocks my freaking socks off.

  12. Instead of reading the morning paper and watching CNN (my usual Sat morning routine), I read your Indie Spam post and watched Spongebob!!  What a great way to start the day!!  lol..  I must have Elemental Styles Xenon-- it's my favorite out of this group (along with Whimsical Ideas by Pam) Great Swatches!!

  13. So many awesome polishes! Some of these are lemmings and now I have more to add! I had been eyeing Cheshire for a while now but now I'm not sure if I should get it. I hate glitters that are a pain to apply.

  14. Love all of them. Especially the Whimiscal Ideas by Pam.  I have 3 of the polishes you showed and needed some ideas on how to layer them.  (Where Hatched and I Believe in Fairies)

  15. OMG!!!! I LOVE this post!!! There is so much creativity right now in the indie polish world and you swatches show them beautifully!! I also greatly appreciate your honestly in regards to application issues, polishes not arriving looking like the sellers photos/swatches and number of coats needed.

  17. So much awesooooome!!!!! I've worn Lovey Dovey with Pelican gray and it's a great combo! I'm dying for so many of those polishes now; too bad I'm broke! Lol.

  18. That's such a bummer about Hippie Fest :(  Though I've heard from some indie makers that different batches of the exact same glitter will sometimes give them problems, so it's possible that an older shipment was tested but the new shipment bled.

Beautiful swatches, as always :)  I am IN LOVE with my Whimsicals, which I think you've already swatched in the past (Seuss and Peanut Butter & Jelly).  I agree- I think Kitty Glitter would look SO much better over a pale blue, the nude just does nothing for it.

I just got Hell on Heels last week, and already regret buying the mini version.  SO gorgeous!  I'm hoping all of my matte combos (I just got a bunch from Amy's Nail Boutique) will help me spread out my love so that they all last longer!

  23. I love indie polishes as well, but I have had a couple of bottles that look nothing like the photograph in the listing. Some indies have amazing consistancy (which I'm not sure I could manage if I made my own polish!) but they have to remember that the big brands like OPI/CG/Essie etc. wouldn't be in business if every batch looked a little different...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ahhhh where to start!

First, love the post :) I have been on a HUGE indie kick lately...it is all I've been buying! And maybe a few HTF old OPI's :) I LOVE Pam's polishes and I have 4 of them though none of those! CrowsToes is interesting; I've got all of the current ones and Cheshire and Absolum are SUCH a pain but Black Diamond and Snow Bunny are a dream! Maybe because those are thinner? I'm afraid to put polish thinner in indies; is that weird?

Also with the Dollish May the Odds be Ever in Your Favor (which omg I NEED!!!) I see that one blue glitter as Prim's one entry out of thousands in there being pulled :) I wonder if the creator put one piece of blue glitter in each bottle to represent that? I'm gonna pretend that is the case, cuz that'd be rad :)

  26. THANK YOU!  thank you for doing swatches of so many indies that I had questions about and some I already love!  I LOVE indies, and am a die hard fan of Nailventurous and Whimsical Ideas by Pam!  I also like Pretty & Polished and Dollish Polish. :o) The others that you swatched, I had questions about and all I needed was an honest review of them and real pictures of their polish on nails!  So, now I can go ahead and buy the ones I want and forego the others. This is a fantastic post!  I will share on my FB page!

  27. This is the best post ever! I love it.

  28. I like seeing these posts a a lot!! and don't apologize for the ranting, I find it incredibly helpful that you are honest about the polishes, it helps me to make my buying decisions. I'm sometimes wary of the quality of indies (sparse glitter.. bleeding glitter.. etc) so it is nice to see a spam post that is fun to look at but helpful too! Those Dollish Polishes from the Dolly Does Polish are so cute! I think I need to get some non-glitter indies :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm sorry, but most of these are pretty ugly. Just my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I love you for this post. So much glitter!!!

I LOVE how you made Hatched so lemony---that's another fave of mine!! LOVE this post.

  43. I can say that out of all the indies I have this is the very first time I've ever had an issue with any of them! I'm glad my reviews can help you!

    ReplyDelete
  44. :( unfortunately it's very expensive and hard to legally ship nail polish from the US internationally. I wish there was an easier way to ship so that everyone could easily buy the polishes they are after

    ReplyDelete
  45. thanks! I'm so excited to see them, I was shocked I was even able to get tickets!

    ReplyDelete
  46. thanks! And WOW about your experience, I haven't heard of LaceyLouNailStockpile but I will definitely be staying away from that shop now...thank you for the heads up about that. I hope you at least got your money back, what a nightmare!

  47. LOL your poor wallet, it probably hates me!

    ReplyDelete
  48. haha that is awesome, that's my kind of morning routine! I think Whitney from Elemental Styles is restocking soon (tomorrow if I remember right!) I hope you can get Xenon, it's one of my favorites from the post also!

    ReplyDelete
  49. It's hard to apply because it is SO glitter packed, I don't regret that purchase at all....it's gorgeous in real life! It's worth that painful application, I think! If you want it I say go for it!

    ReplyDelete
  50. awesome, Pam's polishes are so gorgeous! I hope I helped with the layering combos!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Thank you! I agree, there is some gorgeous stuff coming out of the indie world lately!

    ReplyDelete
  52. lol I know the feeling, though I'm broke because of hoarding all these indie polishes! The Lovey Dovey/Pelican Gray combo was such an expected favorite!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Interesting about the glitter, I wonder why that happens. You'd think the same supplier would give them the same quality glitter :(

I did swatch those 2 Whimsical polishes before, both are gorgeous! Hope you can grab Hell On Heels, I got so many compliments over the last week wearing it!

    ReplyDelete
  54. thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  55. lol about John Stamos!!

  56. I agree about the Alta Costura polishes, those were very unexpected favorites, especially Electric Eyes! Agree about Hippie Fest too :(

    ReplyDelete
  57. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  58. For another great combo, though not as unexpected, right now I'm wearing Lynnderella LavenDear on an accent nail over the COS BAR for Target purple. Let's see here...I have a link to my pinterest. http://pinterest.com/pin/120189883775866072/ My pics suck (not like yours which are amazing, and why you're my fave nail blogger!) and my cuticles look like poop but point is, cool combo!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I agree, I'm assuming its very hard to get everything matched perfectly when you are doing it yourself as opposed to huge companies like OPI/Essie etc who have labs who do everything for them (even they have issues sometimes, look at OPI My Private Jet lol!) It only bothers me if my bottle is waaaaaaay off from how it looks in the listing!

    ReplyDelete
  60. thanks! Yay for I Believe In Fairies, hope you love it!

  61. Glad I can be helpful, thanks for sharing my post <3

  72. I think maybe it's because I have so many Lynn's that compared to the rest it just doesn't do it for me :(

Glad you like Hatched, I need to wear that combo again!

    ReplyDelete
  73. you're too hard on yourself, your picture is great! I love that combo, I need to pick up those Cos Bar polishes. I keep passing them in Target but I always put them back. Those 2 look great together!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Well for $3 each, it's all I can afford right now!

    And thanks! :)

    ReplyDelete
  75. Shoshana - it can be frustrating to buy indie polishes sometimes though I like to think of it as the thrill of the hunt, haha...for the ones who sell on Etsy they will often close the shop so you can be notified when they return (which is especially nice if you do not stalk their FB accounts...I say frustrating because many sell out in minutes when they open up, BUT on the other hand I am so proud of these ladies for doing what they love and it is not a full time job so when you miss a sale just know there will be others! There is definitely an art to it haha.

And Jen, if you do not mind me plugging another on here, Enkelini is awesome! Pat's polishes are AMAZING quality, rad shades (not all glitters) and she is always in stock. And she has some of the best customer service out there :)

    ReplyDelete
  76. There are quite a few indies that have been using WB's Frankie's Plasma suspension base that are reporting bleeding and curling glitters when previous, different base hasn't had that affect on them before.  I'm wondering if WB is having the same issue now and it's the base.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Poop. I guess my first comment did not go through! Anyway, I love all of these, and have most of these brands, but mostly other shades - so I love seeing these! I know know I NEED the Hunger Games one - and I was thinking perhaps the blue glitter is supposed to be like, Prim's one single entry in that big bowl? I wonder if she put one single blue in every bottle, cuz that'd be rad!

Also have you tried Enkelini? On Etsy? Her polishes are amazing! Great quality, not just glitters, and her customer service is top-notch. I just love her and plan on featuring some of her polishes soon! She is also someone that right now is always in stock - I think once her name gets out there, that'll change!

awesome post! I love Whimsical Ideas by Pam - all of her polishes! Hopefully I'll get one soon! And matte glitter, it sounds weird but it looks so awesome! I have Floam but wow, I think I need Humble Bee too!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Oh I have it!  But just the mini size so I'm sure it's going to go fast- I ALWAYS regret buying minis, but then I continue to do it...

And I'm not sure with the glitter, but I know it has got to make things extremely frustrating.

  80. Wow, what a lineup of spam! Thanks for all of these *honest* reviews. I love honest feedback about how a polish actually performs and looks when you apply it, not just how purty it is in the bottle (99% of them are gorgeous in the bottle, so it's easy to assume they'll be amazing on the nail). I was sad but not surprised to see some Darling Diva Polish was tough to work with. I love some of her polishes (Reef Fish is so gorgeous, and although it can chunk up a bit because it's so packed with glitter if you're not patient with the layers, it really looks beautiful, especially over a bright blue), but Anita was a different story. Anita is red, white, and blue glitters in a clear base, and it's a bit "cloudy" in the bottle, so I think it's the new suspension medium she mentions on her Etsy page. It's H-e-l-l to work with. I attempted to do Anita over red, white, and blue bases for Memorial Day, and it was gloppy and so hard to fish out actual glitter in the base that I ended up with a blobby mess on my fingers. Had to take it all off and start over without even doing my left hand. :( So disappointing. She would be so pretty and perfect if I didn't have to get a gloppy mess just fishing out some glitter. It's like the ratio of glitter to medium is off. But anyway, just thought I'd add that to say you're not alone in having problems with some of the Darling Diva Polish items. Sad, because she has gorgeous stuff. And I appreciate the honesty about some of the other polishes. I think I agree with you on Lynnderella's Gotta Love Brains. Kinda meh to me.

  81. Nail Venturous Orange You Unique over the Jessica polish is a slam dunk. I NEEEEEED BOTH!! :D

And that's effin' crazy how different that Hippy Fest polish looks from the one you received. I do agree. It seems like a bit of a gamble with some of the newer Indie polish creators when it comes to quality control. :/

  83. Nerdlacquer can be bought on Ninjapolish, but it is currently all out of stock, but Nailventurous is almost always out of stock, so I am not sure if they are just sold out or not selling anymore.

  85. Lawd but this post is full of WIN! You are a searching machine for sure. Sadly (happily), you've added a good $100+ to my wishlist but I can live with that :)

  87. My wallet desperately wants me to avert my eyes, but they're just. so. pretty!  I love the look of matte glitter too--it really lets you appreciate and enjoy the colours. Time to start updating my indie wish list...;)

  89. Ahh there are so many different combos that I loved in this post that I forgot them all by the time I got to the bottom hahaha!! But these are great. For some reason I really love Kitty Glitter... maybe it's the name :p And I'm seeing the Beach Boys this weekend at Bonnaroo! Hope you had fun :)

  90. Who cares about the polishes!  How do you pump out so many swatches at one time?

Thank you so much for your honest words on application (and other) issues with these polishes!

You have helped me downsize my indie wish list.  It takes me long enough to do a neat, lasting manicure (it needs to last a minimum of 4 days without any chips for my standards) without having to deal with extreme application hassles!

I am definitely never buying anything from Wonder Beauty Products.  I really wanted to get Hippie Fest and American Weed, but your review and photos of Hippie Fest confirm all the negative feedback circulating about Wonder Beauty polishes.

I am disheartened to hear that Darling Diva Polish is such a nightmare to apply.  Her Zoey Jane, Angry Beaver, and Rainbow Bridge polishes are near the top of my wish list.  As for the gloopiness, I wonder if Seche Restore would fix that without bleeding the glitter....

  92. I have to say that I dislike 95% of these.  I'm so glad I didn't get wrapped up in Indie polishes.  My wallet is thankful!  But I do think that a lot of them look good on you.

  93. Sorry, disregard the last half formed comment haha. I really love hatched by Pam, if she shipped to canada I would buy that one for sure. It's such a bummer finding an indie polish you want and they don't ship to Canada. I am also super into matte glitter right now as well, it just looks so awesome.

  96. I have quite a few Darling Diva Polishes and have not had any issues applying them. If any of the glitters have ever been a little to thick to apply, I use a drop or two of thinner and they apply beautifully. Just wanted to give you my feedback, because I think her polishes are gorgeous...especially Ringer!!

  98. I bought a Wonder Beauty Products polish a few months ago, and it looked nothing like the picture, either. I think her pictures are very misleading.
