China Glaze New Bohemian Collection Swatches!

TGIF! Today I have the New Bohemian Collection from China Glaze to share with you. When I first saw the promo images of this collection I was all be still my duochrome loving heart...since then I've been pretty much stalking my local beauty supply waiting for them to get them in. I finally got my paws on these a few days ago and I'm so excited to share them with you!

The New Bohemian Collection is 6 beautiful duochrome polishes, China Glaze is calling them "luster chromes". I enjoy that name, it sounds very fancy haha! To see swatches & reviews of each shade along with a couple comparisons click the read more button after the photo below!

Deviantly Daring is a green/teal...described by China Glaze as a peacock teal. Unfortunately the duochrome once this is on the nail is pretty much non existent. I can see the duochrome in the bottle but it just doesn't translate, even over black which you can see at the end of the post. The formula was pretty great, I used 2 coats for the photos below.

I didn't have any issues with staining on this, it does seem like the kind of teal that would stain so I would recommend 2 coats of base coat with this one.

No Plain Jane is purple with a very slight golden/pink duochrome. The duochrome was a bit more noticeable in real life but not by much. This is very pretty I just wish it had a little more of a color shift. The formula was nice, not as sheer as I thought it would be but I did need 3 coats for full opacity.

Below is No Plain Jane vs. Nails Inc Cheyene Walk. These look to be pretty spot on dupe wise. Formula wise I preferred the China Glaze but not by much! I used 3 coats of each polish for the photos below.

Another possible dupe to this one is Deborah Lippmann Private Dancer but I don't own it so I'm not sure just how close that one is.

Rare & Radiant is a green/gold duochrome. I'm pretty sure this is at least the 4th polish I have that looks exactly like this, unfortunately. The formula was really nice, I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Below is Rare & Radiant vs. Chanel Peridot. Formula wise I prefer the Chanel but brush wise I prefer the China Glaze. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Other dupes for this: Jessica Iridescent Eye and OPI Just Spotted The Lizard. I believe Deborah Lippman Swagga Like Us is also very similar but I don't own it to check.

Swanky Silk is a beautiful golden peachy base with a pinky peach duochrome. I have to tell you, I was not a fan of this in the bottle...I almost didn't buy it. On the nail however, my opinion changed...I love it! The formula was good, but it was a bit sheer. I used 3 coats for the photos below.

This looks like it might be similar to Deborah Lippmann Sugar Daddy, but again I don't own it so I'm not sure if it's a dupe or just a cousin. Based on pictures I've seen of Sugar Daddy I'd say you probably don't need both though.

Unpredictable is a blue toned green with a golden duochrome. I really like this one, it's like a more blue toned version of Rare & Radiant, I've been wanting a polish like that so I am a fan! The duochrome does leave a bit to be desired, it's on the weak side but you can see it unlike a couple other polishes in this collection. The formula was really nice, this did tend to be a bit brushstrokey though. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Want My Bawdy is a rich blue with a very slight purple duochrome. Even though the duochrome is pretty much non existent here I really love this one. The blue base color of this is gorgeous!  The formula was great on this one, I used 2 coats for the photos below.

P.S. I've had this song stuck in my head since last night because of Want My Bawdy. Thanks for that, China Glaze! In case the embedded video doesn't work here is the link: http://youtu.be/Hphwfq1wLJs

I decided to try all 6 polishes over black to see if it might pump up the duochrome in these. Sadly, it didn't really do anything in the way of making them more duochrome but I do like them this way and it's usually how I wear polishes like this.

The first set is Swanky Silk, Rare & Radiant and No Plain Jane over black...each is 2 coats over black.

Below is Unpredictable, Want My Bawdy  and Deviantly Daring over black. I used 1 coat of each over black for these photos.

Overall I enjoy this collection, sure there are a couple that I wish were more duochrome but they are pretty even without a color shift. My picks are Swanky Silk and Unpredictable, the rest I feel like I can live without or I already have dupes for them.

The China Glaze New Bohemian Collection is due out officially in August. It's already available on several etailers like Transdesign and Head2ToeBeauty. I'm guessing we'll see it at places like Sally Beauty Supply and Ulta soon!

  1. I wish the duochrome were stronger but some of the colors are still very pretty! Esp the blue & teal! <3

  2. Thanks for the amazing swatches! I'm sad to see some of the duochromes were duds... I had such high hopes for this collection. I think I like Swanky Silk best.

  3. wow, I love all of these! And I especially love your perfect swatches! The first picture I would almost call a piece of art, it should be displayed in some gallery!

    Beautiful polishes!! ♥

  6. This is the first I've seen of these! I'm not too sure about them though - I'm not a fan of metallics or duochromes and these remind me of them. We'll see, they may grow on me.

Wow. This is upsetting. I was looking forward to the duo chrome line but what's the point of having one if there isn't a strong duo chrome in every color. Half are barely there. What I think is hilarious is Rare&Radient is not rare at all because there are 4 other polishes just like it. (Including GAP, I saw a blogger post about it a while back.) I really like Swanky and Silk. I've been eyeing that one since I saw pics of the bottles.

  8. Nice post! Love No Plain Jane and Bawdy!

  9. I had such high hopes for these.. they arent as strong duochrome as I expected them to be so I am kinda disappointed :( boo.. I dont like brush strokes -_- Boo. great swatches though :) x

  10. Below is Rare & Radiant vs. China Glaze Peridot. Formula wise I prefer the Chanel but brush wise I prefer the China Glaze. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Did you mean to say Chanel Peridot?

    Otherwise, great post :)

  11. Glad I saw this post... I wasn't sure which ones I wanted. Too bad the duo-chrome effect isn't that great.. they are beautiful though :)

  12. I've been waiting for someone to swatch these ! I bought Unpredictable and No Plain Jane just yesterday ! My local Sally's didn't have them out yet but the sales lady was kind enough to pull them from the backroom. SQUEEE !!! Can't wait to wear them myself. Thank you so much for all your hard work. I've learned so much from your blogs these last few months that I have been paying attention to my nails - :)

  13. They're not bad but I expected more of these :(

  14. I've been waiting for these... and I'm very disappointed. I already have dupes for most of them, and the colours don't seem like anything special. Well, all the better for my wallet, I guess...

  15. I believe Unpredictable is a dupe to Nicole by OPI's Mer-maid For Each Other (here's the link: http://polkapolish.blogspot.com/2012/07/notd-mer-maid-for-each-other-swatch.html) I am not sure if they're close or are cousins. Is that possible?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Swanky Silk is the only one that catches my interest. I like Just Spotted the Lizard but snagged two bottles so a dupe is unnecessary and the rest don't have enough duochrome to grab me.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thank you so much for hunting these down and reviewing them. I was pretty excited when I first saw the promotional materials for these, but your review convinced me that I don't need them. Pretty as they are, without a strong duochrome effect, there's nothing really unique about any of them. I have dupes or near-dupes of all of them. Better luck next time, China Glaze.

  18. Ohh my! So pretty! Unpredictable is my favorite as well

  19. A HA! I think Swanky Silk will kill my lemming for Lippmann Sugar Daddy :)

  20. Love this collection, I'm only missing "
Deviantly Daring"... Aarghh, the hunt is on! Thanks for the swatches!

  21. Unpredictable looks very much like a Korean polish I have and love - Missha Crystal Polish HGR01. It'll be great to have a more accessible alternative, and the Missha has a bit of a strange fake-flower smell that drives me crazy.

  22. I don't own that NOPI, not sure how close they are unfortunately

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yes, I fixed it.....typos happen lol

    ReplyDelete
  24. I <3 duochromes, but I'm not keen on any of these really, which is sad cause they looked amazing on the promo shots!

    ReplyDelete
  25. When I first saw the promo pictures I was super excited for those. I just wish the duochrome effect would be stronger on the nails. I love I Want my Bawdy for it's super pretty blue color though.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Great swatches! I've been eyeing this collection, but the weak duochromes has put me off some of them. I can kill my DL Sugar Daddy lemming with Swanky Silk, though, so yay! I also like the colours of No Plain Jane and Deviantly Daring that I might break down and get them anyway.

Thank you! Your swatches and reviews are fabulous as always. :)

  27. Swanky Silk and Unpredictable are my favourites ! May need to buy these soon !

  28. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who starts singing odd songs due to nail polish. I wa starting to think the fumes have a strange effect on me. :D Nice swatches and reviews!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I love the teal and the blue!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thank you for the swatches, but honestly I'm disappointed in these. :( I was really looking forward to the teal one, as that's my favorite color/polish color, but sadly there doesn't appear to be any duochrome. These really just look like metallics to me. Happily for me though, I have Cirque Epoch on its way to me, which is an awesome teal/purple duochrome. Thought these CG's would be really awesome, sadly not so much...

    ReplyDelete
  31. I have Private Dancer from DL and the purple in Private Dancer is a little bit deeper and you can definitely see that it's a duochrome. It is one of my most favorite polishes that I have! awesome swatches by the way :)

  32. I love your swatches. I think I need I Want Bawdy

OMG what a thorough review!! Thanks for this!! Love it!

  34. I was waiting to see some swatches before ordering them and sadly I'm not a fan of this collection... thanks for the great pictures!

  35. I was really excited when I first saw the promo for this collection. Now seeing them I am not so sure. They are looking more frosty than I would have wanted (and I really hate frost anything - wore it for years as it was all there was - frost or cream and 'back then' only old ladies wore cream. Looking down at some of the other comments, I see I am not alone in being less than blown away with this collection. Despite that - your photos/swatches are wonderful. I can never wear the bright teal polishes like D. Daring here is - oddly they say anyone can wear teal - but I surely cannot wear teal frost, teal glass fleck or shimmers. I can wear teal creams however. I would never buy the green/gold one (that shade has been done to death). The blue is pretty but I have sooo many blues and this one has no duochrome. This might be a collection I finally learned not to jump on the I want wagon and take the chance and see if I hit them in a Sally's 50% off bin down the road.

    ReplyDelete
  36. By the way, I do have DL Private Dancer - it's a darker, more metallic look than this one is here.

    ReplyDelete
  37. do they stamp well with konad's plates?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I don't know, I don't stamp...sorry

    ReplyDelete
  39. I expected so so much more of these ones, I was waiting for them for a while and now I'm disappointed :(

    ReplyDelete
  40. They don't look very duochrome...maybe that's why China Glaze is calling them "luster chromes" instead...? Anyway, thanks for the swatches! I have Chanel Peridot, so I'll be skipping Rare & Radiant. But I really like Swanky Silk and Upredictable!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Thanks so much for the honest review. It's kind of a let down that these aren't as 'duo-chromey' as they should be...yeah, it's a word now :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. can't wait to see in person. I think Unpredictable might be more golden than swiss cottage , but will not know untill see together.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I am disappointed. Obvious disconnect between manufacturing and marketing; the promo shots were gorgeous. You did a lovely job as usual swatching and reviewing. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I was so excited about this collection when I saw the promos and just bought all of them on Transdesign... and *then* saw your post! Now I'm disappointed! Oh well... I guess I can use them for stamping... :P

    ReplyDelete
  45. Deviantly Daring and
Unpredictable are my favorites I think.

Scrangie did a comparison when she posted about DL Swagga Like Us, it is slightly more yellow than Peridot.

  47. Oh. seeing these swatches now has made my excitement dropped rapidly for this collection. I see no change in color in these and the only polish that's actually duochrome is the Chanel the dupe. I might still purchase them and use them as base for my real duochrome polishes though.

    ReplyDelete
  48. It's at Sally's online now....even though I probably have some (all?) in different brands, I still love CG, and have grown to love all their collections lately. Plus I'm more likely to experiment w/ layering/stamping/art than my more expensive DLs (I own the DLs you mention but I can't remember offhand how the swatches look).

Thanks for such a great review!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Swanky Silk has a strong duochrome also but the rest are are lacking :/

    ReplyDelete
  50. I picked up all of these, and although the colors are pretty, im really disappointed in the lack of duochrome in the darker colors. My favorite one ended up being the one i thought id like the least, the light peach color.

    ReplyDelete
  51. No/weak duochrome?? :( Guess I'll be dropping big bucks on the Lippmanns after all :(

    ReplyDelete
  52. I looked and saw that both Sally' beauty and Ulta now have them online. Sally's is $6.99 ($5.99 for members) Ulta is $9.00. I thought your readers might like to know.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I've been wearing Swanky Silk for about a week now, I really love the pink-gold colorshift! I haven't tried any of the other colors yet because I really like this one and I don't want to be disappointed! Lol

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think I have dupes for most of these and the ones I don't aren't as pretty as I thought. I have 2 of the 3 Deborah Lippmann ones and I think they are pretty close. Private Dancer might be a little darker, but it is close enough to not really need both.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I have to say that some of the colors you are absolutely right about the duo-chrome not being present. However, I found that Swanky Silk, Defiantly Daring and Rare & Radiant are amazing once on the nail! Swanky Silk is the best for sure! I think some people are not giving this collection the credit it deserves!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Oh wow! Swanky Silk looks gorgeous on the nail! I will definitely look into that one. Beautiful swatches!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I was so excited about this until I saw the swatches. I'm totally "meh" on this one. The only one that I'll probably pick up is Deviantly Daring because I can't turn down a nice teal. I'll be holding out for the Hologlam collection next year.

    ReplyDelete
  58. SIGH I am SO sick of the Chanel dupes!!! I'm sure there's tons more creativity in the nail polish designers!!! However, I *REALLY* like the
Swanky Silk and No Plain Jane swatches!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Much as everyone else is saying: I truly expected more from the promo pictures. The only duochrome that deserves that title is Rare & Radiant but I already have OPI's Just Spotted the Lizard, so getting CG's would be pointless. The others either are weak as duochromes or not colors that appeal to me. It seems more like a metallics collection...
