Saturday Spam: American Apparel

Hi guys, hope you're all having a good weekend so far! Today I have a bit of American Apparel spam for ya! Slowly but surely I'm getting through my list of polishes I've never showed here on The PolishAholic!

American Apparel was one of the first brands I remember hauling from back when I started blogging, I think that was actually the last time I bought any of their polish too. Since I last bought from them about 2 years ago they've started coming out with more than just creme polishes, they have glitters, metallics and jellies now. I keep meaning to check out their new polishes but then I go on their website to look up info for posts like this and am welcomed with ads featuring topless girls painting their nails and am reminded why I don't love to buy from the brand anymore. Anyway, I do love the cremes I have, they were great basics for when I was starting out!

To see swatches of each polish click the read more button below.

Butter is a light yellow creme. The formula, for a yellow, is pretty nice. It's a tad bit streaky but it's opaque at 2 coats. I did however need 3 coats to even it out on my of my nails...but again for a light yellow that's not too shabby!

Echo Park is a light grey creme. Great formula on this one, I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Factory Grey is a darker grey creme. The formula again is really nice, it's a bit sheer on the first coat but I only need 2 coats for full opacity.

Hassid is a black creme. For a long time this was my go to black, my bottle is about half empty though you can't tell that in the photo! I ended up finding other black polishes I liked better but this is still one I reach for every so often. The formula is awesome, a 1 coater!

L'Esprit is a light lavender. The formula is pretty amazing formula, on most of my nails it is a 1 coater, I did need 2 coats on some nails but overall they didn't need it. For a color this light that's pretty impressive!

Make Up is a a nice tan brown creme. I don't particularly love this on my skin tone but it would be fantastic on other people! The formula again, great! I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Office is a light minty green creme. The formula was ok on this one, it was a little streaky but not too bad. The opacity was good at 2 coats but I needed 3 to even it out. I also had some problems with this leveling itself out which you can see in the photos. I've worn this before and I don't remember having that problem so I'm not sure if it's the polish or the ridiculous humidity we've been having where I live causing it.

Passport Blue is a dark blue creme. This is one of my favorites, I grab for it quite a bit for layering! The formula is fantastic, another 1 coater!

Pinto is a brownish red creme. This is one of those ugly/pretty colors that I tend to like, it's not for everyone! The formula is probably my lease favorite of all the American Apparel polishes I own. It's a bit sheer so I needed 3 coats for full opacity, even then it's a bit patchy looking.

Raccoon is a dark brown creme. This one dries a little bit dull, I don't have a top coat on in the photos so you can see what I mean. The formula was pretty good, this one is on the thick side but it's a nice 2 coater.

Rose Bowl is a rosy pink creme. The formula was again great (sick of me saying that yet?), I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Alright, this one I *think* is Summer Peach Palm Springs. The label off the bottom of my bottle is gone so I'm not 100% sure. It might also be Palm Springs. I hesitated about showing this since I'm not 100% sure which it is but I like the color so I decided to. The formula was good, a little streaky though. I needed 3 coats to even it out.

Edited to add: Thanks guys, I think you're right...this is Palm Springs not Summer Peach lol!

American Apparel polish is available at American Apparel stores and on their website here. Like I said at the beginning of the post I bought all of these about 2 years ago so I'm not sure if all of the shades are still available or not!

  2. Can you believe Rose Bowl is my favorite? I guess I'm in the mood for pinks. All of these are great staples for someone just starting their collection. Love the Saturday spam. Great swatches!

  3. Thanks for the spam, love AA polishes.

I think the peachy one might be Palm Springs cause I own Summer Peach and my bottle is lighter and more stark.

  4. You really need the sheers! I don't have any creme, just the sheers and one glitter! Great quality, who could imagine seeing the clothes lol!!

  6. I love AA polishes and I think they are underrated. However, you are missing a swatch of my favorite, Poppy. It's the perfect orange red and one of my top 5.

Smoke Dazzle is one of the newer metallics and it is outstanding. Similar to WnW Gray's Anatomy/OPI Not Like the Movies but a bit darker with a stronger duochrome flash.

Finally, for gold lovers there is now a gold flakie topcoat.

And if you need a gold lame leotard, you can pick that up too while you're at AA! ; )

  7. My fav AA is Poppy. It's the perfect orange red and one of my top 5. Smoke Dazzle is also excellent. It's a bit darker version of WnW Gray's Anatomy with a better purple/green duochrome shift. They also now have a gold flakie top coat.

And if you need a gold lame leotard, well you can pick one up while you are there! ; )

  9. I don't own any AA polishes but I do have a few that I want. Butter and Summer Peach are a couple of them :) but I don't think the swatch you showed is Summer Peach

  12. I too am not a fan of their advertising, especially the photo that you mention. I think it's because they generally cater to a fairly young crowd. I haven't shopped there in the past, and I'm really not in a hurry to start, but I will admit that they do have some cute colours.

  18. I wouldn't buy from them either. Topless girls for advertising? Seriously?! It's so disgusting and unnecessary. Ick! Way to portray women today. What do breasts have to do with nail polish?

  20. I love blue passport: it was my first dark blue polish and that's where my love for blue polishes started. I wear this one often, it's such a beautiful deep dark blue. Thank you for sharing these swatches!

  25. L'Esprit is a gorgeous light lavender. But wah - I think the Butter shade may be discontinue now. Just when I ordered it, I think it sold out....at least for awhile! Makes me so sad - it was the perfect light butter/custard yellow, and at such a good price too! Boohoo. Do you have any ideas for dupes for Butter? I was looking at piCture pOlish Mellow Yellow and thought maybe.... If you have any recs, I'd be so appreciative. Thanks!
