Hi guys! Hope you all had a great weekend, mine was nice I'm sad it's already over. Today I have swatches of most of the China Glaze Cirque du Soleil Collection to share with you! Apparently this collection is inspired by the Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away 3D movie coming out towards the end of December. I had no idea they had a movie coming out, that'll be something I'll have to see. I've seen a few of the Cirque shows and they are always amazing, I'm sure the film will be awesome.
I've been waiting for this collection, practically stalking my local supply shop for them. They finally got them in last Wednesday so off I went to hoard them all. This collection brings us 12 new polishes, I ended up picking up 8 of them. The 4 I passed on were all red or pink, they just didn't look that unique to me and those are 2 colors I need no more of. Well really, I don't need any more of ANY colors but I don't like reds or pinks enough to justify buying even more of them lol!

Creative Fantasy is a dark almost neon purple. In the bottle this looked neon, which is why it came home with me. On the nail it ended up being much darker than I expected it to. I do like the color it's just not what I thought I was buying. The formula was just okay, it was a bit sheer and patchy. I used 3 coats to even it out. This did dry a bit matte, I used top coat for the photos.

Creative Fantasy vs Sation Miss Emo Shun All. In the bottle these looked nearly identical, on the nail however they aren't dupes at all. The Sation polish is lighter, more blue toned and much brighter. I tried to photo this in the sun to show how much brighter the Sation was but my camera was having none of that haha! Formula wise, Miss Emo Shun All was much better, it was more opaque and a lot easier to apply. I used 2 coats of the Sation and 3 of the China Glaze, I also used top coat for both polishes.

Def Defying is a chartreuse green creme. Love this color, I have a soft spot for chartreuse because my Grandpa hated it...so I love it. Is that weird? The formula was nice, a little streaky on the first coat but a thick-ish second coat fixed that right up. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Def Defying vs OPI Did it on 'Em. As soon as I saw Def Defying it reminded me of OPI Did It On 'Em from the Nicki Minaj Collection OPI put out earlier this year. I thought for sure they would be dupes. I was very wrong though, they ended up being much more different than I thought they would be. Did It On 'Em is way more yellow, when it's next to Def Defying it doesn't even look green at all! I used 3 coats of the OPI and 2 of the China Glaze for the photo below.
Get Carried Away is a sheer black base with silver and red hex glitter along with black bar glitter and small silver and black glitter. There is a whole lot going on here! You can use this on it's own or layered, personally I like it better layered but that's just my preference. The formula was just okay, it was thick and chunky...definitely one that will benefit from thinner. I used 3 coats for the photos below, both photos are in the shade.
Below is 1 coat of Get Carried Away over Creative Fantasy, I really liked this combo!

Hanging In The Balance is a bright blue creme. I really like blues like this even though it's probably not the most unique shade ever. The formula was nice, not thick and it flowed nicely on the nail. However, this stained...badly. If you get this I would do a couple coats of base coat to help avoid it staining your nails. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Hanging In The Balance vs OPI Ogre The Top Blue. This is another that I thought was for sure going to be a dupes. In the bottle they looked almost identical but on the nail Ogre The Top Blue is a couple shades lighter. I think they are probably close enough that you don't need both. I used 2 coats for each polish for the photo below.

It's A Trap-eze is a milky white base packed with multicolored glitter. The glitter colors I'm seeing are white, pink, green, gold, blue and orange but there are probably some other colors hiding in there. Is this unique? I tend to think so but only because it differs from other multicolored glitters due to the white glitter in the mix and the absence of silver glitter which seems abundant in other glitters like this. I have a lot of multicolored glitter but none of them have white glitter. It might not be unique enough to justify *needing* it but it's one I'm happy to add to my collection! On it's own I used 2 coats to get it opaque. It was a little thick and chunky to apply but it's so packed with glitter that I'm not sure there is a way to remedy that.

It's A Trap-eze works for layering also if you do thin coats. I feel the need to layer it over everything now, next on my list is to put it over is Creative Fantasy...I think that will look beautiful! I used 2 thin coats over Hanging In The Balance for the photos below.

Running In Circles is very finely milled green glitter in a green tinted base. The green glitter has a nice golden flash to it! I died a little when I put this on, it is SO gorgeous! It's one of those polishes that just glows. It didn't look that fantastical in the bottle but it's easily one of my favorite greens of the year, I won't be surprised if this makes my 2012 favorites list. It kind of reminds me of China Glaze Emerald Sparkle, it's nowhere near being a dupe but it it just gives me those same happy vibes. The formula was great, much more opaque than I expected! I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Water You Waiting For is a mix of blue and green glitter in a slightly blue tinted base. I really like the mix of glitter, it has very finely milled glitter along with some bigger pieces. It makes it interesting to look at in low lighting. The formula was great, not thick at all and the opacity was really nice. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Whirled Away is black hex and bar glitter along with big white hex glitter in a clear base. This was easily the polish I was most excited about from the collection, I even almost bought 2 bottles. Glad I stopped myself from doing that because man am I disappointed. This polish is kind of a mess, I appreciate what China Glaze was going for here but this is just...no. I don't know why I dislike this so much since individually I like all the components but it's just something about the mix of glitter that turns me off, I don't like the way it looks on the nail and the formula was a pain. I have a lot of black and white glitters from a variety of indie sellers (because I am obsessed with them) and well, this is easily my least favorite of everything I own.
The formula was a huge let down like I mentioned about. It was hard to get the glitter onto the nail, the white hex glitter was especially elusive...I had to fish it out of the bottle. Even dabbing this on like I do with other difficult glitters was a chore. Maybe I had so many issues because I had instant buyers remorse the second I started trying to apply this which made me give up...who knows. I used 2 "coats" over Def Defying for the photos below. Please excuse the bubbles in the photos, it was from my top coat and I disliked this glitter so much I didn't feel like re-doing the manicure. Sorry :/
Overall I didn't end up liking this collection as much as I thought I would but there are a couple winners in here. My picks are Running In Circles, Water You Waiting For and It's A Trap-eze.
According to the China Glaze Facebook page the official launch date for the Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away Collection is December 1st. However, you can already find it online...I've seen it on Transdesign.com, it also looks like NailPolishCanada.com will have it soon. If you have little independent beauty supplies (i.e. not Sally's or Ulta) near you they might also already have it out also!
For Whirled Away, have you ever thought about using Sammy's (Nailasaurus) technique of painting the glitter onto a make-up sponge to soak up most of the clear polish and then 'spongeing' on the glitters? Also, do you think Def Defying is similar to Essence's L.O.L.? I have L.O.L., but I'm running low and I'd rather buy a larger bottle of something that's a dupe or super similar instead of buying another small bottle. Thanks for the swatches! I always love them! :)
ReplyDeleteHi! These are great swatches thank you, this is very helpful indeed ! I do not blame you for not wanting to the last mani over again! I thought I wanted that Whirled Away, but I think you said it all there. I am like you with red and pink, but I am finding myself liking red more lately, because of CG Joy collex, : )
ReplyDeleteOrder! I find this collection really perfect!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely getting
ReplyDeleteDefinitely getting Water You Waiting For! So pretty! Was gonna get Whirled Away but it seems the hex glitters maybe too big for my short nails :(... Oh what's your take on It's A Trap-eze compared to OPI Rainbow Connection layered over white? Could they be similar? I'm on the fence on getting it but I'm such a sucker for multi colored glitters :D
ReplyDeletethanks for the swatches! "Get Carried Away" and "It's A Trap-eze" look intense, love it!
ReplyDeleteGotta say, you broke my heart a bit. One of my favorite polishes ever is my Black Tie Affair from Nails by Laura & was, like you, hoping for a non-indie option. I will pick up a few others but hopefully this is a sign of originality to come?
ReplyDeleteI think Water You Waiting For and It's a Trap-eze are my favourites. Overall I'm not too crazy about the collection. It just doesn't seem to have the cohesiveness that I appreciate in other China Glaze collections (like On Safari). It just looks like a bunch of random colours put together. Maybe after seeing it a few more times I'll change my mind, but that's my initial impression.
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit underwhelmed by the collection as a whole as well- but I LOVE It's a Trap-eze. Goregoues!
ReplyDeleteI don't have the Essence you mentioned, sorry
ReplyDeleteThanks for the swatches! I already ordered a couple of the glitters but held off on the other colors since I didn't know what they were - it looked like more neons. I might need a bottle of Def Defying for nail art purposes!
ReplyDeleteWow, that is such a bummer to hear about Whirled Away... I'll be getting a bottle tomorrow and I bet I'll only poke it with a stick... =( Well, I'll try it in hopes for a better bottle, if it's not for me I'll sell it! I also bought It's A Trap-eze, and I'm really looking forward to that one. =)
I agree with you it is quite a disappointment. I was excited about the black and white glitter but I don't like it's big and chunky. Thank you for the swatches
ReplyDeleteDitto! These are the two I'm most excited about as well!
ReplyDeleteI agree...Whirled Away has a terrible formula...I've tried to like it a few times now and I just can't love it!!
ReplyDeleteWow, you're good. You are soooo good. Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteOh I am so bummed about Whirled Away! I'm pretty uninterested in the whole collection, I think I'll only be getting It's a Trap-eze. Your swatches are lovely as always!! :)
ReplyDeleteI tend to agree but when you look at the inspiration I think it matches that very well. I can see where the colors were pulled from in the photo China Glaze is using on the display!
ReplyDeleteI think it depends on if you care if they are exact, the glitter in Rainbow Connection (and all the glitters like it) is a little bigger and the colors are different. i.e. they all have silver glitter and Trap-eze doesn't. If you don't need them to be exact it's probably close enough if you sandwiched it between a white jelly.
ReplyDeleteThank you :)
ReplyDeleteThank you <33
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only one with issues, it was awful. I was like wtf the whole time I was putting it on. Hopefully if other major brands try to dupe indies they do a better job with it.
ReplyDeleteHope you have better luck with Whirled Away!
ReplyDeleteGreat swatches... too bad Whirled Away was such a disappointment!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I waited for your swatches! The promo images looked great, but then seeing these...meh. Not so much. It's a Trap-eze is interesting to look at, but for me at least has too much going on to want to wear it at work. And man they blew Whirled Away. Way too much bar glittler, not enough hex glitter. And here I was having hope for those who couldn't get their hands on the indies!
ReplyDeleteOh well! This is why I follow bloggers like you :)
How was the removal of water and running?
ReplyDeleteThanks for doing the Sation V CG purple comp! I was wondering how they stacked up but my lazy self didnt feel like actually doing a comp lololol!! They are both <3<3<3<3<3<3!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLike the milky base confetti one. I can completely see how the 'sticks and stones' type one does not work - the white hexes are too large and don't look right dropping more than 1 on the nail I am sure because they are too big (to say nothing of the mess you said the formula was)...I am curious what this bright lime green one looks like next to say ChG GagGa for Green or others that have been bright lime green - not looking that new/fresh to me at all...and wonder what the 4 shades were you did not pick up..guess I will look over at Transdesigns and see. I just called my Sally's and they don't have them in yet.
ReplyDeleteWow! I love Get Carried Away. Each one of those is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteI love the colors together (green, blue, and purple) but not sure if I should get them...I guess I will just decide when I see them in person. Water You Waiting For is really neat though! I will be picking that up for sure! It's a Trap-eze looks like the jelly sandwich I did with OPI Don't Touch My Tutu and Rainbow Connection.
ReplyDeleteNow see, I thought I only needed Whirled Away, Get Carried Away and It's a Trap-eze, but now it turns out I need to blue and green as well... Look what you've done! Good job it's Christmas coming up :p

ReplyDeleteThanks for doing the purple comparison. I was thinking as I was reading that it looked like what I wanted Miss Emo-Shun-all to be, and was wondering how it compared. And then I kept scrolling and there was the comparison! :) I think I like the Sation one better in the comparison as the CG one looks a bit more red. Thanks, Jen!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that you posted this. I was planning on buying all of them. Now I only see a couple that I really want. I was also curious about all the polishes you used for comparison when I saw this collection. Those were the ones I thought looked like dupes and I have them already. No need to buy these even if they aren't dead on! Thanks Jen!
ReplyDeleteI adore the It's a trapeze!!! Must have this polish!! :)
ReplyDeleteNot sure if you would know or not - but is Def Defying a fairly close match for "Grass Slipper" by Sally Hansen (Complete Salon Manicure)?
ReplyDeleteI don't own that Sally Hansen, sorry
ReplyDeletethank you for these swatches! they've really narrowed the collection down for me - a few that i thought i wanted i definitely don't want now and a few i REALLY want now haha!
ReplyDeleteCreative Fantasy reminds me of UO's Bandeau. I'm thinking I only want It's a Trap-eze.
ReplyDeletehelped me narrow it down :) thanks for the swatches
ReplyDeleteDo you own Zoya Ivanka? I'm wondering how Running In Circles compares.
ReplyDeleteAmazing polishes. I want them all :)
ReplyDeleteThis was a great post, very helpful and pretty. I felt like you read my mind--as I was reading your description of the purple China Glaze, I was wondering how it would compare to my bright Sation polish, and BAM! there you were with the comparison. :)
ReplyDeleteWill you do a comparison between Water You Waiting For and Kendall On the Katwalk? They look similar to me :)
ReplyDeleteWater You Waiting For is the only one I really like here. I can pass on the other shades unfortunately!
ReplyDeleteAw, crap. Your swatches are drop dead gorgeous, as usual, but I can't remember ever being less impressed with a China Glaze collection. I don't want any of these :-/ But looking on the bright side: I just saved my money for the O.P.I. Eurocentral Collection :D
ReplyDeleteI think my favorite is It's A Trap-eze! It seems like the most unique of the bunch. Thanks for the swatches!
ReplyDeleteIt amazes me that some of the most mainstream brands are starting to put things in their collections that seem kind of like indies. I mean, in this one there are three glitterbombs and even a connect-the-dots dupe!
ReplyDeleteWow I really love a lot of these, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYour swatches are gorgeous and I love pretty much all of them : ) It's a real shame to hear about the formula of Whirled away. Could def defying be a dupe for Opi Who the shrek are you?
ReplyDeleteI don't own Who The Shrek Are You, I'm not sure how close they are...sorry!
ReplyDeleteDo you know if Hanging In The Balance would be similar to Sally Hansens Xtreme Wear polish in Blew Me Away? If so, I may pass on HITB. Great swatches btw :)
ReplyDeleteHow would you say Def Defying compares to Slushied? And Watering you waiting for in comparison to Absolutely Alice?? Love Def Defying and It's a Trap-eze.
ReplyDeleteSlushied is blue, Def Defying is green. Absolutely Alice is blue and gold, Water You Waiting for is Blue and Green
ReplyDeletegah, long day, I meant Hanging in the Balance and Slushied. I'm trying to decide between Ogre the Top, Slushied and Hanging in the Balance..Although HTB staining turns me off a bit.. I was thinking Def Defying vs Who the Shrek are you? So happy the husband has the next week off, It's not only been a long day, but a long week!
ReplyDeleteI agree on your "winners" Running In Circles, Water You Waiting For :-)
ReplyDeleteI just went to Sally's and the lady there was so nice, she let me by the three winners you mentioned, before it was supposed to be out! BTW your blog is amazing!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIf I can find my bottle of Slushied I'll let you know, I think I might have gotten rid of it since it was a mini but I can't remember. Unfortunately I don't own Who The Shrek Are You so I can't compare that one
ReplyDeleteare you sure that glitter is white and not silver? because it looks like silver glitter turned white under the milky jelly base. It's exactly how my multi-glitter bombs look in a white jelly sandwich, the sheer white makes silver glitter pop and turn white. I could be wrong, but I think this is plain old multicolored glitter in a white jelly base instead of clear...
ReplyDeletestill SOO pretty though
I think i only want trapeze and get carried away. The rest are "meh" to me, whirled away looks pretty in the bottle but not so much on the nails. Feel like they should've added some bar white glitter and hexes. Eh o well.
ReplyDeleteIt's white :)
ReplyDeleteI work at Sallys's, and the moment we got these in shipment, I swatches all of them and ended up buying the whole collection. All of the colors are great and unique, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteNice colours...I wore It's a Trapeze over Hanging in the balance over my nails when I went to see Cirque Du Soleil live on stage.
ReplyDelete
