Saturday Spam: Layla Hologram Effect

Happy weekend! Anyone doing anything fun this weekend? I'm going to go to a concert tonight, I'm seeing Minus The Bear in case you're wondering. Other than that I'm not up to too much, I can't afford to do anything after my visit to Sephora for the 20% off VIB sale hahaha!

Today I have some holographic spam for you! A little while back Layla was on Hautelook so I decided to buy a few of the newer hologram effect polishes I had been lemming. Check out all the photos after the jump!

Formula & application wise these are on the tricky side, some are better than others though. I used Nfu Oh's Aqua Base as my base coat for each of these and it really helps with applying these. If you have any of the Layla hologram effect polishes and are having trouble with them I would suggest trying an aqua base out! All of the photos in this post are in direct sunlight and without top coat. As per usual with holos like this they are SO much better in real life!

Cloudy Violet is a medium purple holo. It reminds me a bit of China Glaze LOL but like a bazillion times more fantastical. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Coffee Love is a dark brown holo. This was one of the ones I was most excited about getting but I'm a bit let down by it. I didn't find the holo to be very strong, it was more visible in real life but not as great as most of the Layla's I have. I used 3 coats for the photos below.

Emerald Divine is a green holo! Reminds me a bit of Nubar Reclaim but a touch lighter and much more holo. This was crazy in real life, one of my favorites! The formula was one of the nicer ones also, I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Gold Idol is a very yellow toned gold. Oh.My.God. Can we just talk about how fantastical this holo is...I died a little when I stepped out in the sun with this on. It doesn't love my skin tone very much but seriously, who cares...it's awesome. This is hands down the best gold holo I currently own! I used 3 coats for the photos below.

Misty Blush is a dark purple holo. This is darker than Cloudy Violet, more brown toned. They are close enough though so you probably don't need both if you're debating about these. I used 3 coats for the photos below.

Red Taboo is a red holo. This is my biggest nail polish disappointment in a long time, sadly. I'm always in search for a perfect red with a very strong holo. My expectations were high due to how great most of the Hologram Effect polishes are. Not only was the holo pretty weak in this but it's a very pink red, double disappointment. The only positive thing I can say was the formula was nice, probably the easiest to work with out of all the Layla's I own. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Layla Hologram Effect polishes are available on a few etailers including the fabulous Harlow & Co and   Ninja Polish

Hope you all have a great weekend!

  2. I love Layla's holo! I've only got a few of the first ones that came out but I'm definitely planing on getting some of the new ones including Gold Idol!

  3. Do you have any tips on how to successfully photograph a holo? I got an entire collection recently (less one) from Pupa and I badly want to swatch it, but I can't seem to get it to show up in photos! The holo is quite strong in person, so I know that it's not a polish issue.

  4. I grabbed Coffee Love, Cloudy Violet, and Red Taboo from Hautelook. I've only tried Red Taboo so far and I was really really disappointed that it was so pink. It's a pretty pink, but.... don't call it red!

  6. Gorgeous swatches. I love how Misty Blush looks. Too bad Coffee Love isn't as holo as one would expect to get from Layla, but it is still beautiful.

  7. Do I had enough of holos? nop

  8. I'm sad to see that Red Taboo is so pink! I'm on the search for a true red holo. I think I will settle for the Jade one that's out.

  9. Even with a less impressive holo (for Layla, at least), I love Coffee Love--I don't think I've seen a brown holo before! But holy cow, that Gold Idol...so, so gorgeous!! Want. =)

  10. All beautiful! I picked some of these up during the Hautelook sale and I'm glad I made all the right choices :D Red Taboo probably wasn't as holo as I thought it would be, but for some reason I still liked it anyway. I too was expecting a truer red than a red-pink, but I still really liked it! Enjoy your show tonight; I haven't heard the name Minus the Bear in a few years but they are classic!

  12. The Jade one is pretty great, I like that one the best out of all the reds I've tried!

  13. lol I think nope is always the answer to a question like that....you can never have enough holos!

  14. holos are SO hard to photograph, best way I've found is direct sunlight and standing with your back to the sun so it's directly on the nail. Then I usually take a ton of pictures, the odds are good I get a couple good ones that way lol

  15. The layla holographics are so pretty, but they don't even last a day before they start peeling completely off my nails :(

  16. *Sobs into my wimpy holo collection*

    These are so beautiful!

  17. Cloudy violet and emerald divine would be my favorites out of the bunch but they all look very nice. Red Taboo reminds me of Orly Miss Conduct.

  18. Matte top coats work good for a holo base as well. I like NYC's Matte Me Crazy.

  19. Emerald Divine and Misty Blush are SO stunning!

  20. Agree the green one reminds me of that same Nubar shade - and the red...oh are we ever going to get a good strong red holo? I have looked for a long time and they just seem not to give up the goods if they are deep and end up pink if they try to lighten 'em up.

  23. The red one is soo gorgeous!! :-)

  24. Do you use top coat with these? I have Layla Mercury Twilight and absolutely love the way that it looks, but I have heard a lot of people say you shouldn't wear holos with top coat so I didn't and it was chipping within a couple of hours :/

  25. I mentioned in the post that I did not use top coat :)

  26. I could be wrong, but I think Miss Conduct is pinkier than RT. But I would love to see a comparison swatch ;-)

  27. Haha, I was just going to reply the same. Jade's Vermehlo Surreal looks pretty red to me, no shades of pink there, and Jade makes fabulous holos!

  28. Wont lie. I want that Red Taboo, simply because it looks like a gorgeous Hot Pink holo and I love me some pink!

  29. Gold Idol made me squeal a bit. Love this!

  30. I've used Seche Vite with mine and it looked fine and didn't chip.

  32. Wow, Coffee Love and Golden Idol-gorgeous!!

  33. I saw that deal on Hautelook and ended up buying 3 of the new Layla holos myself! Golden Idol is amazing although I do do yellows very well!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I had already fallen for Emerald Divine and didn't even paid attention to the Gold one. But now, you got me hooked!
I'm also looking for the PRH (Perfect Red Holo). Any favorite at the time? Thanks! Love your website by the way! xo

  35. Best I've come across so far is the red from Jade!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm so mad that I passed on Gold Idol! D:

  37. I think the best red holo is the one from Jade, by far! I love your swatches! Where would you recommend getting an aqua based bottom coat from?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I like the Aqua Base from Nfu Oh, you can get it on Fabuloustreet.com :)

  39. I use the LA Colors blue base from dollar tree and it works just as well for Layla holo's I think. Have you ever tried a holo sandwhich? I got a week worth of wear and only minor tipwear using that method. It's just like a matte sandwhich.

Hello ! Love those pics, I'm a huge fan of holo polishes too ;)
If you're looking for a true red with a good holo effect, I'd recommend Ares, form the Brasilian brand Hits Speciallità (No Olimpo collection). They have perfect holos in incredible colors ! (sadly the bottles are fairly little... but they're cheap. And cruelty free).
I'm waiting for the China Glaze Hologlam this summer... I definitely won't miss it.

  41. Hiii!! I'm from Brazil and I love your blog!!! We don't have any national brand that does many of the polishes you guys have out there (magnetic, holographic) and I like to get them online anyway =P Recently I got China Glaze When stars collide from the hologlam collection (if I'm not mistaken =P) I saw Layla's swatches and I fell for them too, oh god xD What I want to know is witch one of them lasts longer? Are Layla's much more holographic? tkx =*
