Nicole by OPI Modern Family Collection Comparisons

Hi guys, Happy last day of 2012! Anyone doing anything fun tonight for New Years Eve? I'm probably staying home, going out on NYE scares me....too many drunk idiots behind the wheel. I am doing up my nails though, I'm wearing Nails Inc Noho with a gradient of Essie Set In Stones! Before I get into the meat of this post I just wanted to take a moment to be corny and thank you all for visiting my blog. I appreciate that you take time out of your day to read my posts and interact with me places like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. You guys make me feel sane for my weird obsession with nail polish. When I'm having a bad day this blog and all of you make me feel better, I'm so thankful for all you guys. I never imagined that anyone would read my blog and it still blows my mind that so many of you do. I hope you all have a great and safe New Years Eve tonight and I'll see ya in 2013!

Today I'm going out with a bang for 2012 in the form of a gigantic comparison post for Nicole by OPI's Modern Family Collection. I loved the collection but I felt like we had seen the majority of the colors before. I found some dupes and some very close shades and I'm excited to share them with you! Hope you all find this post helpful!

To see all the comparisons click the read more button below!

Basking In Gloria vs OPI The One That Got Away vs OPI You Only Live Twice. No dupes between these 3 but they are all somewhat similar, if you've been lemming a less sparkly version of either of these OPI shades Basking In Gloria is something you will like. I used 2 coats for each polish for the photos below.

Shade

Sun

A Like-Haley Story vs OPI My Address Is Hollywood. These 2 are much different but the shimmer is very similar, A Like-Haley Story is like a darker/brighter version of My Address Is Hollywood. I used 2 coats of each for the photo below.

A Phil's Paradise vs Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure Shoot The Moon vs OPI Designer De Better. No dupes in these 3 but Shoot The Moon is very close, if you have one I'd skip the other. Also, I forgot to write down notes for this comparison so I'm not sure how many coats I used for each of these :( The photo below is in the shade since it's easier to see the differences in that lighting.

Alex By The Books vs Essie Where's My Chauffeur vs China Glaze Kinetic Candy. No dupes here, Where's My Chauffeur is much darker and way more blue and Kinetic Candy is lighter and more blue. I used 2 coats for each polish for the photos below.

Shade

Alex By The Books vs Color Club Blue-Ming vs Nicole by OPI My Lifesaver. These 3 are a little closer but still no dupes, My Lifesaver is a few shades darker and Blue-Ming is more blue. I feel like if you mixed My Lifesaver and Blue-Ming you'd get something close to Alex By The Books. I used 2 coats for each polish for the photos below.

Shade

Alex By The Books vs OPI Mermaid Tears. I thought these 2 would be closer but they are actually pretty different. Mermaid Tears is more green and a quite a few shades darker! I used 2 coats for each polish for the photo below.

Alex By The Books vs Zoya Neely. Neely is from Zoya's new Lovely Collection for Spring 2013, I'll have proper swatches of it up soon! No dupes here but they are similar, Alex By The Books is a bit more minty and blue. I used 2 coats of Alex By The Books and 3 coats of Neely for the photos below.

Shade

Am I Making Myself Claire? vs OPI Steady As She Rose. These 2 are pretty similar, Steady As She Rose is slightly more pink toned but the difference is small. I used 2 coats for each polish for the photo below.

Am I Making Myself Claire? vs Zoya Kendal. These 2 are also very close, Kendal is a bit more purple but again very close. I used 2 coats for each polish for the photos below.

Shade

Back In My Gloria Days vs Zoya Mimi vs OPI Grape Set Match. No dupes between these 3, Back In My Gloria Days is much lighter than the other 2 shades. I used 3 coats for each polish for the photos below

Shade

Sun

Candid Cameron vs China Glaze Deviantly Daring. Dupes, I couldn't tell these 2 apart on the nail! I used 2 coats for each polish for the photos below.

Shade

Haley Good Lookin'... vs OPI Teenage Dream vs OPI You Glitter Be Good To Me. No dupes between these 3 but Haley Good Lookin... and You Glitter Be Good To Me are fairly similar...you probably don't need both. The main difference between those 2 is the larger hex glitter, in You Glitter Be Good To Me it's dark pink and in Haley Good Lookin'... it's lighter and iridescent. I used 1 coat of each polish over Nails Inc Black Taxi for the photo below, the photo is in the shade!

Haley Good Lookin'... vs Sephora by OPI Bibbidi, Bobbidi, Pink! Bibbidi, Bobbidi, Pink! was part of Sephora by OPI's Cinderella mini set that came out not too long ago. These 2 are pretty much the same,  the Sephora by OPI polish has slightly more of the larger hex glitter. If you have the Cinderella mini set I'd pass on Haley Good Lookin'... I used 1 coat of each over Nails Inc Black Taxi for the photo below, photo is in the shade.

Luke Of The Draw vs OPI Metallic 4 Life. I wouldn't call these 2 100% dupes but they are very very very close. They have the same base and same glitter but Luke Of The Draw seems to have a lot more silver glitter than Metallic 4 Life does. You definitely don't need both, I prefer Luke Of The Draw. I used 2 coats of each polish for the photo below, photo is in the shade.

My Jay Or The Highway vs OPI Did You Ear About Van Gogh?. These 2 looked pretty spot on in the bottle but the OPI ended up being much lighter once on the nail. I used 2 coats for each polish for the photo below.

Stand by Your Manny vs Nicole by OPI Nothing Kim-pares To Blue. These 2 are dupes, there is a slight difference with the formula but the color/shimmer is exactly the same. I prefer the formula of Nothing Kim-pares To Blue, it seems to be a little less patchy. I used 3 coats of Nothing Kim-pares To Blue and 4 coats of Stand By Your Manny for the photos below.

Shade

What's The Mitch-uation vs Nicole by OPI Listen To Your Momager vs China Glaze Want My Bawdy. Listen To Your Momager is the oddball here, the finish and color is much different. Want My Bawdy and What's The Mitch-uation however are pretty spot on, I couldn't tell them apart on the nail. I used 3 coats of each polish for the photos below.

Shade

What's The Mitch-uation vs OPI Into The Night. These 2 are also pretty spot on, What's The Mitch-uation is a touch darker and more purple but normal people won't notice it. I used 3 coats for each polish for the photos below.

Hope this post saves you guys some money, have a great day!

  1. Thanks so much for the comparisons, as always they're super helpful.

I already own Steady As She Rose so I'll be passing on Am I Making Myself Claire? and I'll be picking up Back In My Gloria Days cause it's pretty different from Grape Set Match.

  4. Thanks for comparing all these polishes! I'm not surprised that you had about a zillion possible dupes for Alex by the Books but I was surprised that none of your comparisons were the "usual" mint colors. Still, from all the variety I got a good idea of the color. I'd say I'm safe to stick with my CG pastels like Refresh-mint, etc. Thanks!

  6. How would you say Alex By the Books compares to China Glaze For Audrey & other dupes? In some pictures I've seen, Alex By the Books look much more green, but in these pictures I think it looks more like that Tiffany blue. Maybe it's just the lighting.

  9. Thanks for the great post! I think I'm going to pass on a couple. I really wanted to get Candid Cameron but since I already have the China Glaze I'll pass. I'm surprised Luke of the Draw isn't a dead on dupe for Metallic for Life. I'm definitely going to pick up Alex by the Books even though I have a dozen mints. Lol. I love your blog and appreciate all the hard work that you put into it. I hope 2013 is a great year for you!

  12. Great job! I know when I read your post on the MF collection you had lots of suggestions of things to compare. Thanks so much for showing the ones you did and esp for the Fuchsia/magenta Gloria one with the other 2 OPI's...I can see now there is not a ton of glass fleck in this NOPI fuchsia/magenta Gloria. Thanks for another fab year of soooo many great swatches. I know lots and lots of folks were into nail art this year, but I am a HUGE fan of great colors of polish and really love looking at swatches. Your blog is my go to site when I need a reference and I follow your postings always.

  13. Me too - thought I probably would not have bought this Claire? anyway...I think I only have worn Steady As She Rose one time as it is! - Like you I am going to get Back in My Gloria Days now that I have seen the comps here...I like that one a lot. .. in fact both of the Gloria shades are ones I am going to try to find.

  16. OPI just loves to dupe themselves! I had a feeling that Stand By Your Manny was going to be a dupe for Nothing Kim-Pares To Blue!

  17. Hi Jen, thank you for all your posts along the year. I have been following your blog for at least one year now. On September I broke my arm and stayed home for three months, so I decided to publish my own blog for the Brazilian readers. You were a great inspiration to me. Thank you so much. Have a great 2013, and even more success with your blog.

  21. I was also wondering if you could compare A Phil's Paradise with OPI Number One Nemesis. Alex By The Books against ChG Re-fresh Mint, ChG Aquadelic and Zoya Wednesday. Stand By Your Manny against Essie Teeny Bikini. THANK YOU!!!!

  22. I'm not doing any more comparisons for this collection, sorry. I just don't have time, I also don't own most of those. I'm sure someone else will compare them eventually for you!

  25. Loved your comparisons...and LOVE that you post every day! I am wondering if Alex by the Books is a dupe for For Audrey by China Glaze? It looks like a Tiffany Box Blue to me! :)

  26. This is one of those posts which proves my husband wrong, yes I really need so many shades of polish even tough they are similar ;) Happy new year for you and darling Degen xo

  28. Thank YOU, Jen! In my opinion, this is the best nail polish blog out there - hands down! You always take the time to acknowledge your readers and answer our questions. Your nails are always painted immaculately (I'll refrain from naming names, but when nails are painted in an amateur-ish way, it makes even a gorgeous polish look less appealing, you know?). You update frequently, and you always have the most up-to-date reviews on the newest collections. Oh, and your comparison swatches are always super helpful! I hardly ever buy a nail polish now without consulting your swatches first. I consider myself a fairly new 'laquerhead', but it's nice to know there are other people out there who are obsessed with nail polish too! Anyway, just wanted to say thanks and keep up the great work! I hope you and Degen had an awesome new years! :)

  31. Thanks for posting comparisons Jen! I may not get Alex By the Books or Phil's Paradise after all, like I was planning. Trying to limit myself to just really different polishes than the ones I already have in my collection. ;) This helped a lot. Thanks.
