China Glaze Tranzitions Collection Swatches

Hi guys, hope you all had a great weekend! Today I have another new collection to share with you...it's the China Glaze Tranzitions collection! I believe this is a Spring release for China Glaze but my beauty supply already had them out when I stopped by last week...I'm sure that means they will be online at places like Transdesign soon also (if not already).

The Tranzitions Collection is 6 polishes that change color when you apply top coat to them. We saw something similar earlier this year at drugstores called Colorphase, I reviewed one of those here if you missed it. I heard about these a while back and was excited for them to come out because I liked that Colorphase polish, plus I'm a sucker for things that are like an easy way to do nail art!

Check out all the swatches along with my thoughts about these after the jump!

Formula wise these were pretty much the same across all 6, they were all on the thick side with the exception of Modify Me which was oddly watery compared to the other 5. They were easily to apply and all opaque in 1 coat. Yep, you read that right...all 6 of these were 1 coaters.

The 1 BIG thing I did not like about the formula of these is that they are the kind of polish that will show every single imperfection on your nail. I was surprised by that because of how thick they are, I didn't expect them to settle in ridges. I would 100% recommend using a ridge filling base coat with these, even if you don't have ridges....a smoothing base coat is going to make these look their best.

For the top coat in this post I used CND Air Dry for each polish. I'm going to put the majority of my thoughts at the very end of the post because I have a lot of them...

Altered Reality is a teal metallic that shifts to a darker teal with top coat.

The next two photos are with a diagonal stripe of top coat over the nail to show the difference between with and without top coat. As you can see this hardly changed, at all. fail.

Below is Altered Reality with top coat over the entire nail.

Duplicity is a minty green with a touch of shimmer that shifts to a teal-ish shade with top coat. As you can probably tell I swatched this before realizing a ridge filler would be my best friend with these.

Below is Duplicity with top coat over the entire nail. This was pretty streaky looking in person, I'm surprised it didn't translate into photos that way :/

Metallic Metamorphosis is a gunmetal grey metallic shimmer that shifts to a darker more blue toned gunmetal with top coat.  I kind of love this one without top coat, it's a great streak free metallic.

Modify Me is a cornflower blue with a subtle shimmer that shifts to a darker more purple toned blue after top coat. Like I mentioned at the top of the post the formula on this one was unlike the other 5. It was thin and watery... I found it to be hard to control. It's probably my favorite color of the bunch but it's not one I'll probably wear again because I just don't want to deal with applying it again.

Below is Modify Me with top coat over the entire nail. Like Duplicity this had a tendency to look streaky with top coat over the entire nail.

Shape Shifter is a dark grey metallic shimmer that shifts to a dark purple with top coat. This is by far my favorite of the 3 metallic shades, the color it shifts to with top coat is beautiful!

Below is Shape Shifter with top coat over the entire nail. Out of the entire collection this is the only one I like with top coat.

Split Perso-nail-ity is a dusty purple toned light pink shimmer that shifts to a darker pink with top coat.

Below is Split Person-nail-ity with top coat over the entire nail. I have no words to describe how much I did not like this. It was SO streaky. I redid this swatch 3 times hoping it would somehow get better but sadly, it didn't.

Overall I think this collection is sadly a big old disappointing fail for me. I do like all the polishes without top coat but they are all such a mess with top coat that I can't get past it (with the exception of Shape Shifter, the 1 winner in the collection)

There are some things I do like:

  • The formulas were super opaque, always nice to have a good 1 coater
  • The polish before top coat was nice!
  • If you are only doing nail art, like a funky french, with top coat these might be good for you.

What I did not like:

  • With top coat over the entire nail the majority of these look pretty crappy. All 3 of the pastel shades were a streaky mess with top coat, I could actually see it drying with streaks while applying top coat. I'm not sure why this happens. I tried everything I could think of and nothing was helping. Whether I let the polish dry for 5 minutes or 2 hours before applying top coat it still looked streaky. Quick dry top coat and non quick dry top coat yielded the same results.
  • The metallic shades while not streaky looking with top coat had barely any color change (except for Shape Shifter, which was great). Altered Reality was especially disappointing there.

The only polish I would say is worth the money from this collection is Shape Shifter. I did do a fun mani with the pastel shades that I like and will be posting later today but they are overall a fail, for me.

The Tranzitions Collection should be available in stores in January. If you want to buy online it looks like Nail Polish Canada already has them in stock!

  1. I think these are a great idea, and the blue and pink one definitely caught my eye. The other colours don't really look all that appealing though.

  2. Thank you for a great review! I almost bought these online but now that I read your review, I think I will pass them. Too bad they are so streaky as I really like the idea of these!

  3. Sadly I'm not surprised to hear all of this. I saw CG's video and wasn't all that impressed. They didn't seem like that big of changes... I honestly thought CG would have tried UV color-changing polish over something like this.
    but, that's okay! I don't mind missing out on a collection - it's money saved! =)

  4. Too bad. I was really excited about this collection coming out. Thanks for the heads up! I won't waste my money on any of these!

  5. I like the pink one!

  6. Too bad the formulation of these polishes was disappointing. I usually like China Glaze polishes.

  7. I love that they are one coaters! The colours look great too! Bummer that they look messy after top coat...

  8. I now see why you were feeling meh on Twitter last night! But I am glad you did write up an actual post because you verbalized nicely why these swatches just don't look right.

I remember seeing the promo for these and being slightly intrigued by them, but wondering what I might do with them. Now I see them and I know I can safely pass on the entire set. The fact that they're 1 coaters is awesome, but I need top coat to get any kind of decent wear on these and as that's what ruins 'em...it's a pass for me.

  9. Thank you! I surely will not but these...

  10. Thanks so much for your honest post. I will pass on this whole set -- either they're too frosty & streaky or the color shift isn't impressive.

  11. I wasn't excited about these from the press release and they seem like a huge huge fail. China Glaze has been doing some amazing things lately; to come out with something that looks like you can find at the dollar store is pretty disapointing. It seems like an idea that would have 11 yr olds back in the 90's jumping for joy though :)

  12. Wow, that is a big fat disappointment... And I was excited for these!

  13. I love all of them, specially the pink one!

  14. What a bust! :/ Most of the collection is just kinda "meh," like you said.

  15. I was excited at first, then I saw the swatches and was a bit underwhelmed lol. Thank you for saving my money :) I am very curious to know what the science is behind these though...

  16. I think this is one collection I'm not excited about!! The colors are so-so because they've been done already and I don't think the color shift is all that exciting :\ Thanks for your review!!

  17. I'll pass on these. None of the colors look all that different than what I already have and it sounds like they were a pain anyway. I agree, maybe if you do alot of nail art it might be worth it but they are not for me.

  18. Oh no, that does look dissapointing :(. The idea is fun and hopefully they'll work for stamping (because they seem to be opaque) but I am not quite sure I'd use them the way they are intended.

  19. Yeah I figured they weren't gonna be that exciting. This is probably the first CG collection I have passed on. But on to the next.....speaking of which, do you have any word on the Glimmer collection? My store hasn't got them yet, I just checked today. I'm dying to see swatches. I have seen none! They were set to come out in December with the transitions.

  20. nope, haven;t heard anything about those yet. The guy who owns the beauty supply I buy China Glaze at said he didn't even know when they would be getting them :(

  21. This is probably the biggest China Glaze FAIL I've ever seen. I can't believe this was actually released. :\

  22. pretty much my exact thoughts on them also

  23. I love your dog Degen and what a cute nickname degenbells. I love it. You are so funny and creative,

  24. I was kind of underwhelmed by China Glaze's demo video and I'm not surprised to hear they're kind of underwhelming in real life too. Bummer.

  25. it bums me out that these suck but i kind of expected it... honestly when i first saw the bottle shots and video about them i could already picture the entire collection on the bottom rack at sally with clearance stickers on them. but the awful gimmicky names and the fact that the collection is called "tranzitions" probably had a lot to do with that too haha. i'm usually a huge china glaze fangirl but i want nothing to do with these! thank you for the informative post about them :)

  26. I have some like these, from Barry M, though. The one thing you have to make sure with topcoat is that the topcoat is an even layer, since the thicker it is, the darker it will change. It's almost like applying a sheer jelly over a Creme, you have to make sure it's an even layer.
Thanks for the awesome swatches. I'll probably pick up one or two on sale as a nice one coater, but. Would love to hear how the suggestion turned out. I'm an avid reader and nail freak :)

  27. I'm afraid I just don't "get" this collection. I mean, on one hand, it seems like it would make nail art easier for people who don't really do nail art, but it seems kind of limiting because you only get 1 colour combination out of it *and* you can't top coat your work when it's done. I really do like a couple of the shades--and being one coaters is definitely a plus!--but as much as I'm always so excited to see each new China Glaze collection, I think this one is going to get a pass. :-/

  28. I gave that a shot but it seems like no matter how even I put on the top coat it still streaked. Even on my pinky where I literally did 1 swipe of the top coat to cover the nail. :(

    ReplyDelete
  29. i still like the look of the blue, green and the pink..the metallic looking ones i dont enjoy the look of .but the other three i think i'd get..

  30. Is the streakiness that bad? I really like Duplicity and Shape Shifter and I might probably pick up Split Perso-nail-ity if I find it in a sale later on~

have you tried a different top coat? 2 coats of top coat? a matte top coat? what about trying to put on 2 coats of polish before top coat? will it work with glitter top coat? hahahahaha I have so many questions! So curious

    ReplyDelete
  32. You should try applying two coats of polish before the topcoat even though its opaque enough with just one if you want to get rid of the streakiness of the topcoat. My logic is, the polish applies just as streaky as any other where you need multiple coats, but since it has more pigment, it appears even with only one, which is fine when you don't care for the topcoat effect. The stuff that changes colour will be in the carrying solution of the polish which will not be distributed that evenly with only one coat.
