Sephora X Collection Swatches & Review

Hi guys! Today I have some polishes from the brand new Sephora X line of polish to share with you. Sephora just recently released this line, it includes a ton of gorgeous shades...everything from indie like glitters to duochromes to neons and sheers. There is literally something for anyone and everyone in this new line. From what I understand it's very limited in actual stores (no idea if that will be changing, sorry) but they are available online, I would suggest checking out the Sephora X page on Sephora's website here and typing in your zip code to see if any store near you has these before you run out looking for them. Just to put it into perspective I live relatively close to 3 regular Sephora stores and 1 Sephora inside JC Penny, out of those 4 stores only 1 actually has them...I'm glad I checked online before going out looking for these because the one that had them would've been last on my list to look at!

The Sephora X line is split up into a bunch of different categories including The Illusionists, The Cosmics, The Sparklers, The Prismatics, The New Neutrals, The Pearlescents, The Electrics, The New Classics, The Minimalists, The Industrialists and The Under and The Cover. The display is set up so they are all in their little groups, you can see a photo of it that I posted on instagram here. As soon as I saw it I was like a kid in a candy store, I kid you not I stood at that display ohhhing and aahing over everything for about 20 minutes before I finally decided on the 6 I bought. I was pretty much sold on these the second I saw the display, job well done Sephora...I gotta say. They know how to make us lacquerheads lose our minds.

Anyway enough rambling...yes? Check out all my swatches and thoughts after the jump!

Chaotic is a black and white glitter. I know I need another black and white glitter like I need another hole in the head but I have an addiction...I need all the black and white glitters. I was skeptical at first about this but color me impressed, the formula and glitter payoff was pretty wonderful. If you don't want to deal with trying to get indie glitters this is a fantastic alternative to them. I used 1 coat over Rugged for the photos below.

Here is Chaotic over piCture pOlish Cosmos, I LOVED this combo but I don't think it photographs very well. It looked like space on my nails!

Below is Chaotic vs Lynnderella Connect The Dots. These are pretty close but there are slight differences. The biggest differences I see are that Connect The Dots is in a shimmery base (Chaotic has a clear base), Connect The Dots also has square glitter and white bar glitter that Chaotic does not have. Formula wise they are both good, great glitter payoff in 1 coat. I definitely think you don't need both, if I had to pick one it would be Sephora X Chaotic...it's half the price.

I used 1 coat of each over Sephora X Rugged for the photos below.

Deranged is a dark purple/blue duochrome shimmer in a brownish base. This, while pretty is a bit of a disappointment for me. It's not nearly as duochrome and amazing looking on the nail as it is in the bottle. The formula was really nice, it was more opaque than I expected it to be. I used 2 coats for the photos below, I think this would be great layered over a dark purple or black also...might bring out the duochrome more that way!

In Like is a tan/beige/nude/champagne glitter. I don't know how to describe this as you can probably tell. It's a super super fine golden/nude glitter, this is my kind of neutral. It's something that I could get away with wearing if I had to be professional but it still has a nice bit of something special to it. The formula was nice but a bit on the sheer side. If you have short nails 2 coats would probably be fine but since I have free edge I needed 3 to get this fully opaque. I think this would probably be a nice layering polish also! This did dry down a little dull and flat looking, I did use top coat for the photos below.

In Love is a rosy brownish color with small pink glitter and a very subtle holo effect. I bought this because I thought I saw holo in the store, I was happy when I stepped outside and could see it. It's very subtle but it's there. The formula was nice, I really liked the consistency. It was a bit sheer, I used 3 coats for full opacity.

Rugged is a light sage green creme. I picked this up because in the lighting at Sephora it almost looked like a slightly minty army green. On the nail it didn't end up being like that but I still quite like it. The formula was great, it was nice and opaque and not streaky at all. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Space Cadet is a teal metallic shimmer. I picked this up because it looked like more of a green leaning teal in store but on the nail it's much more of a blue leaning teal. The formula was really nice, it flowed nicely and was easy to apply. It did show some brush strokes but not as many as I expected given the finish. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

So before I tell you my final thoughts I have a small rant. Lets talk about the caps of these bottles. They are big and square and a pain in the ass. I was hoping the big square part would come off, like how the caps on Butter London and Chanel polishes do...but no dice. I tried to pry that sucker off and it didn't budge. For me this makes it difficult to use the brush, big bulky tops like this make me crazy.

Another reason I don't like caps like these are because it seems like no matter no hard you try they never line up correctly after you open them for the first time. Now I'm left with 6 bottles that look like the bottle below in my Helmer...I am annoyed by this...it's ugly. :(

Cap, y u no line up correctly?!?
Aside from the majorly annoying and hard to work with cap I think these Sephora X polishes are pretty great. Next time a VIB coupon comes my way I'll probably pick up a few more. I do think they are pricey given the size of the bottle but let's be real...that's never stopped me from buying things before. Out of the 6 polishes I bought In Love, In Like and Chaotic are my favorites..the others I could live without.

The price for the Sephora X line ranges from $9.50 for the cremes, shimmers & treatments to $11.50 for the glitters and duochromes. As I mentioned in the beginning of the post they are in limited stores but available online at Sephora.com.

  1. I completely agree about the caps! It drives me up the wall that they don't line up after you use them. My favorite of the collection is Chaotic.

  2. Ooh nice!
Ah, those bottles remind me of BYS ones, with the not closing all the way thing. It's soooo annoying and looks so ugly. :(

  7. I absolutely love your site. Your swatches and explanations are fantastic. I can't wait to try some of these new polishes. I especially love Chaotic. I just checked the website and it's not in stock and there isn't a Sephora within 100 miles of my house that carries the line. This will drive me crazy! :)

  8. thank you! Hopefully you can grab it when they restock it!

  9. Hmm interesting, I'd love to see these in person. It looks like only Sephora booths within department stores have this collection because those are the only Sephoras around me that have this...

  10. That's probably just for your area, the one where I live that has them is a stand alone store, not one inside a department store

  11. Wow, I think that cap issue might actually be enough to keep my from buying them--that would drive me insane! Otherwise I was interested in Chaotic--I'm always looking for a good way to satisfy my Connect The Dots craving!

  12. I was thinking of buying the black and white glitter seeing as all the indie ones I want are sold out. Also I don't like buying polish on line. I prefer the satisfaction of being able to have my polish right away instead of having to wait a week or so! The price isn't too bad, but seeing how ugly the cap looks after closing it makes me reconsider. I know it's a petty thing, but that just looks ugly. D:

  15. So glad you mentioned checking to see if the stores carried them! Unfortunately, none by me :( But at least I know to order and line and not go searching!

  16. That's a near-luxury price with a non-luxury cap. :( Some of the colors do look interesting, though.

  17. I feel the same way about the cap. It is such a huge design fail. But I picked up Chaotic and wouldn't trade it for anything!!!

  18. I picked up In Love when I went in to get my free birthday gift last week. The display was almost fully stocked at the Fashion Valley store in San Diego. I did not see it at the Sephora in JCP though. Thanks for the swatches. Glad I picked up the pink and not the purple.

From what the SAs told me at Sephora, there are 50 flagship stores in the country getting the Sephora X displays but it will be rolling out all over the country by this summer.

  20. Hi Jen! I think In Love is a dupe to Nicole by OPI All Is Glam, All Is Bright, but I'm not sure:( can you do a comparison?

  21. I work at Sephora and my store didn't get them :( The company only put it in 50 stores to start with, and I guess they'll just go from there depending on the success. I've been dying to try them though! This is the best review I've read, great pics! Thanks for sharing!

  22. Do you think they're as chip proof as they say? I can't tell if its better then normal or not:/

  24. Doesnt the square cap pop off? Like you pull it up and then you have the square part innyoue hand and you line it up correctly with the circle

    ReplyDelete
  25. I mentioned in that post that they don't, if they do I sure can't get them off.

  26. I bought some of these yesterday and love them. My caps popped right off with no problem!

  27. They have relaunched the line and re-done the packaging since this post.

  28. I found one of them at my local TJ Maxx. I picked up surreal because it looked like a nice minty green. Imagine my surprise when I swatched it and realized, holy cannoli, its a....HOLO! Not a particularly strong holo but it is one. But I'm sorry you had trouble with your square cap not coming off. mine comes off easily.
