OPI Oz The Great And Powerful Collection Swatches

Hi guys, hope you all had a great weekend! Everyone watch the Oscars last night? I did, only to mark off winners on the office pool haha!

Today I have OPI's Oz The Great And Powerful Collection to share with you! This collection is OPI's Soft Shades Collection for 2013 and it's inspired by Disney's Oz The Great And Powerful that is coming out on March 8th. This collection brings us 3 new glitters, 3 sheer neutrals and 1 new addition to OPI's Liquid Sand polishes.

Check out all the swatches & reviews of each polish by clicking the read more button under the collage!

For each swatch in this post I used Butter London Nail Foundation as my base coat. For sheer polishes like these I prefer using a ridge filling base coat since it has a bit of color to it, it helps with the opacity a tiny bit. For top coat over the glitters I used Chick Nail Polish Wet Look Top Coat.

Don't Burst My Bubble is a light pinky white. This is a sheer, the formula is very jelly like. It was a little thick but easy to apply. I actually found the formula to be really nice, it wasn't streaky at all and built up without issues. I used 4 coats for full opacity.

Glints of Glinda is peachy beige. Formula wise is was very much like Don't Burst My Bubble. It was easy to apply and not streaky at all. I used 4 coats for full opacity.

I Theodora You is a baby pink. Out of the 3 sheers in this collection this is my favorite, for me it was the most opaque of the 3. I feel like it's probably the one I'll grab for again in the future. The formula was great, not streaky at all and very easy to apply. I used 3 coats for the photos below.

Lights of Emerald City is matte white square glitter and smaller iridescent square glitter in a clear base. Kudos to OPI for this, I'm really impressed with the glitter combs they've been doing lately! This is gorgeous over light shades, I also love it over black...the iridescent pieces look very coppery over a darker base. The formula was a teensy bit difficult, the big white squares kept wanting to migrate to the tip of the nail. I found it easiest to apply this by doing 1 coat like normal and then going back and dabbing on glitter in sparse spots.

What Wizardry Is This? is a brown and gold liquid sand. This is a bit different from the 4 liquid sand polishes we saw in the Mariah Carey Collection, it's much more of a shimmer as opposed to glitter like the previous ones. It also doesn't look or feel quite as textured as the previous liquid sand polishes. The formula was good, great consistency and opacity. I used 2 coats for the photos below. It was on the slow side for drying, I had to wait about an hour for it to dry down completely matte.

I'm not sure how I feel about this when it's matte, it's looks kind of weird because of the color. However, this is absolutely stunning with top coat...like whoa. If you like brown polish but don't care for texture get this anyway and just top coat it until it's smooth. Hands down this is one of the prettiest brown shimmers in my stash with a couple coats of top coat. It has a bit of a holographic shimmer to it, I wish the camera could capture how great it was!  The last 2 photos are with top coat in the sun, the other 3 are without top coat and in the shade.

Which Is Witch? is a holographic glitter top coat. There is hex glitter in here along with tiny bar glitter. The bar glitter is actually pretty tiny, you can't really tell it's bar glitter in person due to how sparkly this is. As always, holographic goodness like this is impossible to capture....you can see the effect better in the bottle in the sun photos below. The formula was great, it was very glitter dense without being thick. I used 1 coat over Don't Burst my Bubble for the photos below.

When Monkeys Fly!  is gold, silver and holographic glitter in a clear base. Where do I start? This is probably one of the biggest OPI disappointments for me in a very long time. I really love the glitter combo, this had a lot of potential...however the large gold glitters are no bueno. All of the gold glitters are curled, it is not reflective curling...they curl and stick up off the nail depending on how they go on during application. Even the large glitters that were flipped so they didn't stick up still looked curved on the nail. This was smooth with a coat of top coat but you can still see the taconess of them. Overall, not a fan...if OPI had used smaller non-taco gold glitter in this I think it would have been my favorite from the collection. I used  2 coats over Glints of Glinda for the photos below.

Overall, I like this collection more than I thought I would from the promo images. The sheer shades all have great formulas and will be awesome for layering and making jelly sandwiches. The glitters are also great, with the exception of When Monkeys Fly which I feel is the only miss in this collection. I also love the liquid sand with top coat! My picks are What Wizardry Is This, Lights of Emerald City and I Theodora You.

The Oz The Great And Powerful Collection will be available in March 2013 for $9 a bottle at stores like Ulta, Beauty Brands, JC Penny, Regis, Trade Secret, Beauty First, Chatters, Dillards etc...

  1. thanks for the swatches! I'm curious how what the wizardry is this compares to OPI's my private jet! (especially after using a top coat)

  2. They're all so perfect I don't quite know what to do with myself! xx

  3. I am soooooooo glad I didn't purchase When Monkeys Fly! I could see the taco glitter in the bottle and even though it looked dazzling I passed on it due to the taco glitter. What a shame! It could have been so amazing! I got Lights of Emerald City, Which is Witch?, and What Wizardry Is This? so far but I think I'd like to pick up I Theodora You after seeing your swatches. It looks really pretty! I also am in love with What Wizardry Is This? with a good helping of top coat. It has such depth and the sparkles are beautiful! Very unique too! Though I found it odd that OPI described it as a taupe as it looks brown to me and it has a strong olive tone to it when worn without top coat. It would be cool if they did a taupe like YDKJ but I'm still really loving WWiT? with tc! Awesome swatches and review! :D

  4. I am thinking I will pass. Kind of wanna get the liquid sand one...but then again using a bunch of topcoat just to get it smooth is a downer. Idk about u...but I'm disappointed in these..I think of Oz and Emerald City..I'm def not thinking softshades.

    1. I like these, but agree I wasn't thinking soft shades for Oz!!!!! Would have loved a bold, sparkle-bomb green....maybe a bold YELLOW [brick road].

I love the collection! I picked up What Wizardry is This last week but I was on the fence about Don't burst my Bubble and I Theodora You but now I MUST have them!

  7. I need Lights of Emerald City!

  8. I agree on the taconess of When Monkeys Fly! I made a jelly-glitter sandwich out of that and Glints of Glinda and I really like how it turned out, but the curvature of the glitter just drives me insane.

  9. It's a lovely collection, but nothing really catches my eye. But since so many companies 'abused' the theme and launched their respective collections, I'll also indulge in O.P.I's and pick up at least ONE nail polish, just for the sake of the collection. I can't resist Oz!

  10. Over all a really nice collection but just like you I'm really disappointed at When Monkeys Fly! Taco-glitter is no fun at all.

  11. Awesome swatches (as always :P)! To me, the glitters fit the theme, but not really the three nude-y "blah" colours. It would have been cool to have a rich purple or emerald green in here somewhere. When I think of Oz, especially the movie, I think of bold, bright colours.

  12. i'm glad to see the swatches. I was waiting for the glitter ones but what you say the gold one is a bit dissapointing !

  13. I agree, I'm a bit disappointed in the overall color pallet. I thought maybe the movie was drab or something but I finally saw a commercial for it and the colors were SO vibrant :(

  14. I actually just got What Wizardy Is This and When Monkeys Fly. I was on teh fence about whether I wanted Lights of Emerald City but now I think I do!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Lights of Emerald City is really the only one I'd buy. But, all were beautiful colors except for When Monkeys Fly. I have NO patience when it comes to that type of glitter :O( Thank you for your lovely swatches as always!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ok, you totally just sold me ;) I really like these swatches MUCH more than the collection photos in the magazine!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Don't Burst my Bubble looks so similar to Essie's Ballet Slippers. Comparison, please? :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh gawd, curling taco glitter. No no no noooooo!!! But that brown sand is the shiz with topcoat.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I wonder how similar is Don't Burst my Bubble is to OPI-Bubble bath and OPI-Don't touch my tutu

    Love the swatches!

  20. I've been obsessively checking your blog every day waiting for this review. It's unfortunate that OPI chose to release this as a part of their Soft Shades Collection. It would've been much more compelling with some jewel tones mixed in. Also, what the heck were they thinking trying to pass off that taco glitter??

Anywho, can you please include these in your next comparison swatches?

Don't Burst My Bubble vs.Don't Touch My Tutu
Don't Burst My Bubble vs.You Callin' Me A Lyre?
Glints Of Glinda vs.Barre My Soul

    Thanks in advance!

  21. I'm in love with these polishes! I definitely would like to get some now after seeing your great review (: I agree with you on What Wizardy Is This? It looks much nicer with the shiny topcoat!

  22. Gorgeous swatches!!! I have been really excited for this collection just because of Lights Of Emerald City, shame about the taco glitter in When Monkeys Fly! I totally would have got it!!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. These are disappointing. I mean, Oz is such a wonderful, colorful place, and these are just... Meh. They're not exactly "great and powerful" colors. I would have expected something much bolder to match the movie.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I actually received the whole collection as a gift from my boyfriend today (GOD LOVE HIM!!!). My bottle of When Monkeys Fly was considerably less "tacoed" than some people are reporting. I pulled the brush out of the bottle to look at them because I really wanted to check it out and I'm happy to report that most of them appeared to be mostly flat. I wonder if it's just something that varies from bottle to bottle.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I've been looking forward to your swatches of this collection, and I'm kinda disappointed! Obviously not with YOU haha, I guess I had higher hopes for the glitter. The sheers are beautiful, no doubt, but I've never been a sheer polish wearer. I'm so thankful for your blog...I can trust your opinion and make sure I don't spend money on something I'll end up disliking.

  26. Arghhh... taconess! I just saw Alizarine's swatches and they look tacoish, too.
My picks would be What wizardry is this and the square glitter, and that's about it. But your swatches and review are amazing! :-*

    ReplyDelete
  27. glad to hear yours wasn't as bad, maybe it does vary. Seems like every bottle I've seen is taco city though, even the bottles at my local beauty supply were all awful looking

    ReplyDelete
  28. I liked the look of when monkeys fly at first but I think I've changed my mind and like lights of emerald city. I was expecting some bold colours but I'm okay with the ones OPI introduced.

    ReplyDelete
  29. What Wizardry Is This? is gorgeous! Too bad for When Monkeys Fly. I am disapointed by these soft colors though. I was expecting bold colors.

    ReplyDelete
  30. This is EXACTLY what I was going to say. It's the Wizard of Oz! Color is so important to that story (ruby slippers, the Emerald City, the witch's green skin, etc). Though I've only seen previews for Oz, it still seems like such a missed opportunity for a really vibrant, rich collection.

Thanks for the swatches! It's interesting about the taco glitters in When Monkeys Fly. I recently learned that the swatched nail wheels my polish supply place has with new collections come prepared from the polish companies . Not surprisingly, the OPI collection swatch wheel didn't look "taco" like. I'm sure plenty of people will be unpleasantly surprised by the glitter in When Monkeys Fly. :(

    ReplyDelete
  32. i really love what wizardry it is? <3

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hate taco glitter as well! Too bad because it looks lovely! I'm swooning over Lights of Emerald City!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yes please to these comparisons! :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I don't really get the connection to the Oz movie with these polishes - the trailers are so bright and these just don't fit.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yes, great swatches but a terribly blah and disappointing collection. I won't be getting any of them.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Lovely nudes :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. In your bottle of Lights of Emerald City, did you find that the little tabs on the square glitter was noticeable? I've noticed in all the swatches I've seen it looks almost like a Utah shape with the little nub on it. I'm kind of disappointed in the quality control for this collection. Thanks as always for the swatching! :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. The Liquid Sand one looks delicious with topcoat!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I've heard the main purpose of this collection was for sandwiching the glitters between the polishes, like a jelly sandwich... future post maybe?!

    ReplyDelete
  41. kinda surprised that when monkeys fly was a flop, I was able to sample the gel version of the polish at the weekend, and don't see any of the taconess on my nails. Maybe they have used different glitter in the gel version, or the curing process helps settle them down?

    ReplyDelete
  42. I love the tiny glitter over the very pale pink Don't Burst my Bubble. I also like the Liquid sand Wizardry one, but only with top coat. Without top coat, every male I see (plus my mum) will ask me to go wash the dirt or crap off my hands!

I agree with Emily C about the sad lack of bold colours. I suppose they were trying not to do the obvious. But for heavens sake an Oz collection without Green? They could have done an awesome emerald!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. hmm I wonder, maybe the difference in base affects the glitter (just a guess)

    ReplyDelete
  44. This is the soft shades collection, that's why there aren't any bold colors (like an emerald) :(

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oh how gorgeous! Thanks for the amazing swatches!

    ReplyDelete
  46. You were 100% right about the top coat! Stunning!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Beautiful swatches, you never disappoint!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oof yeah that last one is nasty - I saw it in the salon and even my boyfriend commented on how curly the glitters looked, so you KNOW it aint good when a man notices! I actually only grabbed up the liquid sand polish from this collection but my god is that the standout. It is a stunner with top coat!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Why is there no beautiful emerald city green!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. This is a soft shades collection

Wow!! Your swatches are gorgeous, and I love nudes and soft colors...but what a missed opportunity to do some amazing polishes!! Oz is Emerald and Ruby Slippers and Yellow brick road!! Such a disappointing collection, but you did an amazing job swatching!! One of my favorite Christmas ornaments are my Ruby Slippers!!:) xoxo

  52. Yikes, I'm really in the minority here. I absolutely loved this collection & was hoping they didn't go with the obvious (red, yellow, green). I like the whimsical nature of the glitters, even the taco one lol. I even wonder if OPI was purposely going for that effect & just overdid it lol. The soft shades give me more versatile looks overall.

    ReplyDelete
  53. nope, the taco glitter is bad quality control. They just addressed it on their Facebook page yesterday finally admitting the curling was not intentional

    ReplyDelete
  54. Well, it's good to know they're offering to replace it with another choice of the Oz collection but it sucks for those who've already purchased the whole collection :(.

love the glitters in this collection!

  56. Lights of Emerald City is very interesting

    ReplyDelete
  57. I gotta say I'm not feeling this collection. The sheer colors are all too much alike and the glitters aren't 'pretty'. In Lights of Emerald City the square white glitter is too 'in your face', in Which is Witch...it just looks hairy, and in When Monkeys Fly...curled glitter...nuff said. And then there is What Wizardry is This...it just looks blah in the matter form...now you said it pops with a shiny top coat but it is hard to tell from the pictures...I might have a change of heart if I saw it for myself. This is the only OPI collection where I haven't liked even one of the polishes. What a shame....but....it saves me money so I guess there is a bright spot LOL.

  58. Hi! I found When Monkeys Fly in Los Angeles just last month (Nov) and I have to say I found no Taco-like glitter in my bottle. I absolutely LOVE it over OPI's Every Month is Oktoberfest, especially for New Years!!! Maybe it was just your batch and OPI saw & fixed the problem ;) Give it another try, because seriously want to use it on every single polish. AND btw, I am an ESSIE loyalist, with OPI as my runner up. :)
