Essie Neon 2013 Collection Swatches & Review

Hi guys! Today I have Essie's 2013 Neon Collection to share with you guys! I wasn't planning on picking these up but I wandered into my local beauty supply and well...I couldn't resist due to my total lack of self control. This years neons include 6 new polishes, once I saw them in person I was pretty excited about them because the colors are more exciting than what Essie did last year in terms of neons.

Check out the swatches & review by clicking the read more button below!

All of the swatches in this post are done over Cult Nails Tempest, the display I saw in store for these had a spot for Essie Blanc so I figure if Essie is trying to sell me a white base with them then I may as well swatch them that way. Most of these are jellies, a couple are pretty sheer but the others could easily be worn opaque on their own. Formula wise for the most part these weren't great, there were a couple that were fine but most were streaky and a bit tricky to work with. I haven't worn these alone yet so I'm not sure if that makes a difference for application. My top coat for each swatch is Ozotic Mr. Big Top Coat. If there are any comparisons you want to see please let me know in the comments.

Boom Boom Room is a bright bubblegum pink. This was one of the good formulas of the bunch, which was surprising because I was expecting it to be one of the difficult ones. I used 2 coats over white for the photos below.

Bottle Service is a bright fuchsia. This was a bit streaky at first but it was easy to work with and I ended up only needed 2 coats over white for the photos below. Both photos are in natural sunlight.

Bouncer It's Me is a bright vivid blue. Hands down this is my favorite color wise but OMG the formula was horrible. I was so excited about this that I swatched it first then I was so frustrated and disappointed with it that I ended up throwing in the towel and I quit swatching for the day after battling to get it looking nice. Salt in the wound: it never dried on me. I ended up having to remove this after about 4 hours because I hit my hand on something and completely screwed up 2 of my nails. I still do like the color so I'm going to try thinning it to see if that helps application but I'm not holding my breath for that working. I used 3 coats over white to even this out, it was still streaky in person but it's not really translating in photos.

DJ Play That Song is a red toned bright purple. Formula wise this was a little thick, I found that using thin coats of this made it difficult to apply but using thick coats to even an even coat made it never dry. I'm hoping this is another than thinner will help with. I used 2 thick coats over white for the the photos below. Both photos are in natural sunlight.

Saturday Disco Fever is a bright orange. The formula wasn't too bad on this one, it was streaky on the first coat but the second coat evened it out without a problem. I used 2 coats over white for the photos below, both photos are in natural sunlight.

Shake Your $$ Maker is a bright green. This was another that I was excited about because hello...it's green! The formula wasn't great, it was the most sheer of the bunch and the formula was on the thick side. I found it a bit difficult to get this to go on evenly. I used 3 coats over white for the photos below, both photos are in natural sunlight.

Essie's Neon 2013 Collection is available now, I've seen the display all over the place...at drugstores, Ulta etc... You can also find them online at etailers like Transdesign!

  1. Such a shame that the formula on the blue was horrible! Do you have any recommendations for a better performing blue?

  2. This is what I meant in the survey when I say it seems you are much more honest/ critical about big brands than you are about indie brands.

I have Boom Boom Room and I'm going to try it without a white base underneath. Only other one I would wear is Bouncer It's me, but by the sounds of it, it's way too hard to work with lol. I am glad you swatched these, I was hoping you would soon!

  4. That blue one is really gorgeous ! Too bad that the formula was so terrible D:

  5. Hmm. that blue is awesome looking, though I wonder how much different is compared to Butler Please/Sally Hansen Pacific Blue?

  6. I don't know what survey you are referring to, I am not more critical of any type of polish, I give HONEST reviews regardless of who makes the polish. There have been plenty of indie polishes I've given bad reviews to.

  7. It's darker than both of them!

  8. I don't think I have any exact dupes but Nails Inc Baker Street is close enough for me

  9. It's not a dupe, it's a bit darker!

  10. I feel like I need all of these... the most neon pink I've ever had was Sinful Colors "24/7". If you have tried that one before how would you say it compares to Boom Boom Room?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I don't own that Sinful Colors polish, sorry

    ReplyDelete
  12. Oh that's fine! Just gives me an excuse to go buy Boom Boom Room anyway :)

  13. So, all in all, which would you recommend most? I love them all but am wary for various reasons.

  14. Great colors in this collection!!

  15. I love that you keep it real, if the formula isn't great, you say so- woop! thanks for the swatches- you are my go-to-swatchin' lady!!

  16. I can't say that I'd really recommend any of the polishes in this collection since the ones I liked color wise had difficult formulas and the ones with good formulas aren't very exciting colors!

  17. Saturday Disco Fever looks good I think. I've been looking for a bright "true" orange that doesn't veer into tangerine or red/orange or melon/orange territory. And from the sounds of it the formula was workable on that one =) How does Bouncer compare to Butler (it's darker? by a lot?) Thanks!

  18. Thanks very much! Makes me wish the formula was better, then...I have one never-drying neon, too, and it drives me insane! xP

  19. Over white it's a couple shades darker. I'm not sure how it compares on it's own, since it's a jelly and Butler Please is a creme I think they'd be pretty different when compared that way

  20. awesome - thanks for the quick reply!! I think I'll just content myself with Butler Please for now =)

  21. Definitely try them on their own, though I'm sure those with longer nails would have VNL. I didn't put any white on underneath Bottle Service, Bouncer It's Me, and Shake your $$ Maker, and had wonderful luck with them. I did have to make sure they were careful coats, but on my short nails, they acted perfectly over a base coat/topped with Seche.

  22. I LOVE Bottle Service, it looks interesting and fresh for a pink polish.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Your beautiful swatches have a way to make me want even polishes with crappy formulas!

    ReplyDelete
  24. All of these are really fun- I'm wearing DJ play that song right now!

    ReplyDelete
  25. All the polishes look yummy together! Those pinks and purples are especially tempting! DJ play that song is already on my wish list and Boom Boom Boom is going on there too.

  26. I saw these in Target the other day, and my boyfriend had me almost talked into buying Shake your $$ Maker. I'm just wondering how it compares to Essie's Pretty Edgy and Mojito Madness. It looked similar to those two to me in Target, and I just couldn't bring myself to buy it because I thought it would be the same.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thank you for the swatches! If they look similar, could you compare 'DJ Play that Song' with China Glaze 'Are You Jelly?'?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Shake your $$ maker vs Pretty Edgy?

    ReplyDelete
  29. How close is it to paper chasing by china glaze? It looks a little lighter/less metallic but I'm not sure

    ReplyDelete
  30. I don't own Paper Chasing, I'm not sure how they compare. Sorry

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ooh that is intriguing! Thanks for the info; I may need to pick up this shade :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'd love to see a comparison between Boom Boom Room/Bottled Service/Lights&Camera from the Poppy Razzis.
I know they are not dupes but I'm curious if its necessary to own all of them

    ReplyDelete
  33. mmm... Beauty green!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Are Pretty Edgy an Shake your $$ maker similar. What are the differences?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Pretty Edgy is a creme, Shake You $$ Maker is a jelly and much less opaque.

I picked up Boom Boom today! I think you have the only photos that show this shade true to color. In other blogs, the color looks almost like a pale Pepto Bismal pink and I wouldn't have been interested in that so thank you. It is a true neon and so cute. I'm glad Essie did a true neon pink because I tried to achieve that with other Essie shades and nothing seemed to hit the mark... until this one. Thanks!!

I'm so glad I wasn't the only one having a bad time with these! I really wanted to love them but the formula is so off! As usual your swatches are perfect!

  38. Hi! How does DJ play that song compare to Lippmann -Call me Irresponsible?

    ReplyDelete
  39. If you have short nails don't use a white base and you won't have streaking. If like me you have long nails you can use a similar color. I used Essie Butler Please and Seche Vite to top and I am loving this mani! GL
