Saturday Spam: Formula X

Hi guys! Today I have a big old helping of spam for you, today's brand is Formula X! Formula X is a relaunch of the Sephora X polishes Sephora put out last year. Along with the new name they redesigned the bottles and also made them a little bigger. I'm loving the redesign, mostly because my one complaint about the Sephora X polishes were that the caps didn't come off and they were a pain to get to line up after using the polish...now the caps do come off!!

Formula X launched a couple weeks back online and in stores, the range is HUGE and includes everything from cremes to neons and indie-like glitters. I honestly don't think I have ever been so excited about a new brand, I heard about these being in stores late September/early October a few months back so I saved up all my birthday money and went a bit nuts. I tried to get a little bit of  everything in terms of the finishes but I don't have something from every one of the different lines...yet. I've actually bought more since I swatched everything for this post so expect another post sometime in the future. Check out all the swatches after the jump!

Bionic is pastel lime green glitter and black glitter. I can't help but be drawn to all of these, any kind of glitter mixed with black is something I will like unless the formula is crap. The formula of Bionic was great, it wasn't thick but the glitter was super dense and easy to get onto the nail with good coverage. I used 1 coat over Essie Parka Perfect for the photos below.

Lighting: Shade

Demolition is pastel lime, pastel blue and pastel peach matte glitter in a clear base. The peach glitter is looking a bit white in photos for some reason. This caught my eye because it kind of looks like something an indie brand would do. I really like the mix of glitter, it's kind of Easter-y. The formula was again, really nice. The glitter payoff was great and it wasn't thick. I used 1 coat over Pixi Charcoal Celebration for the photos below.

Hocus Pocus is a subtle purple holo. There are a few other holographic shades in the Formula X range, I decided to get this one to see how strong the holo was before I decided if I needed the rest. Luckily for my bank account this is pretty meh...the holo is very week and the metallic nature of the base color makes it so you can't even really see the weak holo that's there. The formula was ok, it was nice and opaque but I did have some issues with it dragging if I went over a spot more than once. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Hyped is a neon purple with a strong blue shimmer. This is my favorite of this entire post and wouldn't you know I actually scrolled right past it on the Sephora site because it looked boring, their color blobs do no justice to this polish. Once the big Formula X display got to the store near me and I saw it in person I was like holy moses get in my basket you beautiful gift from the Formula X gods. I just can't even with this polish, it's such a beautiful shade of purple and the shimmer just does me in. As soon as I put this on and realized how awesome it was I drove to Sephora and bought all the other neons with shimmer lol! The formula was great, it was nice and opaque...no streakyness etc.. I used 2 coats + top coat for the photos below.

Lighting: Shade

Hyperactive is an iridescent shard glitter top coat. I actually thought this was flakies judging from the Sephora website so it's a bit of a disappointment for me. I'm not a big fan of shard glitter so I'm not loving this one, if you do like shard glitter this is a good one for you. The formula was good, I didn't have issues with the shards sticking up of the nail but this type of glitter is prone to that. I used 1 coat  over Picture Polish Believe for the photos below.

Lightening is a green jelly base loaded with gold holographic glitter. I picked this up because it sort of reminded me of Deborah Lippmann Across the Universe but in green. In reality it's very different but it's the same idea. The formula was good, the glitter payoff was great! This was a little bit sheer but it built easily. I used 3 coats for the photos below but you could probably get away with 2 depending on how the glitter spreads on the nail.

Lighting: Shade

Maniacal is pastel lime green glitter in a clear base. This is pretty much Bionic without the black glitter. I don't have anything like it already so of course I needed it haha! The formula was good, it wasn't thick and the glitter coverage was great. I used 1 coat over Liquid Sky Lacquer Solar Plum for the photos below.

Lighting: Shade

Mind Blowing is light yellow glitter in a clear base. This is just like Maniacal, unfortunately I don't think there is a version of this one with black glitter though. The formula was great, it was easy to apply and super dense with glitter. I used 1 coat over Essie Mind Your Mittens for the photos below.

Lighting: Shade
Outburst is a blue jelly with gold holographic glitter. This is the blue version of Lightening, there are also a few other ones with different jelly bases but I haven't gotten around to getting them yet. The formula was good, it was very glitter dense but easy to apply. I used 3 coats for the photos below.

Lighting: Shade

Pyrotechnic is a red creme. This one is a mini, it was a 100 point perk so I snatched it right up...it's not one I'd buy but if they want to give it to me for some of the points I've hoarded I'll take it lol! I was a little scared since it was a mini but the brush was good and I liked that the cap came off even on the mini bottle. The formula was great, it was nice and creamy...very smooth and easy to apply. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Thunder is periwinkle, pastel lime green and light pastel pink glitter in a clear base. This is the blue version of Demolition, I like the combo more than Demolition because I feel like it's easier to layer with.. The formula was again, great...it was easy to apply and the glitter payoff was great. I used 1 coat over Essie Warm & Toasty Turtleneck for the photos below.

Lighting: Shade

TNT is cobalt blue glitter in a clear base. This is the first polish that went immediately into my Sephora order when these first made their way online. It's basically like Baker Street in glitter form...it doesn't get much better than that. The formula was great, it wasn't thick and the glitter payoff was fantastic. I used 1 coat over Picture Polish Dream for the photos below.

Lighting: Shade

Wham! is white glitter in a clear base. I was pretty excited about this one, I've been looking for a good white glitter. I have a couple indies like this but the formula's didn't thrill me so I'm always on the lookout for better versions. Luckily this one was pretty great so I think my white glitter search is over. The glitter payoff and application were both great1 I used 1 coat over Picture Polish Love for the photos below.

Lighting: Shade

Crash is bright blue glitter in a clear base. This isn't quite as bright as it's looking in my photos but it's brighter and lighter than TNT. The formula was great, it wasn't thick and the glitter payoff was good. I used 1 coat over Thrilling for the photos below.

Lighting: Shade

Galaxy is a dark navy blue base with flecks and bright blue and gold glitter. Sephora doesn't say anything on their site about this being a textured polish but it dries with the look and feel of a texture. I like it both with and without top coat. The formula was fantastic, it was super pigmented and opaque in 1 coat. The dry time was also really good. I used 1 coat for the photos below, the first photos are without top coat.

Lighting: Shade
Below is Galaxy with top coat.

Kapow! is a bright cobalt blue neon with a purple/pink shimmer. The shimmer looks silver in photos because neons are a bish to photograph but in person I promise it's purple/pink. Love this one, not as much as Hyped but it's right up there in terms of awesome. The formula was good, it was a bit sheer on the first coat but completely opaque with the second. I used 2 coats plus top coat for the photos below.

Lighting: Shade

Thrilling is a light beige creme. This is kind of a putty color, I liked it because it reminded me of a more beige version of OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls. I figured it would be good for layering plus I wanted to try the a lighter shade to see how the formula was. The formula was good, it was a really nice consistency and easy to apply. It was a little bit streaky on the first coat but the second coat evened everything out nicely. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Vortex is a bright blue with flecks of gold glitter. This is a lot like Galaxy, I believe it also dries down to being textured. I was running out the door and just slapped on top coat on this so unfortunately I don't have any photos of it that way for you. The formula was great, it was super opaque and nearly a 1 coater. I used 2 coats plus top coat for the photos below.

Lighting: Shade

Overall I freaking LOVE Formula X, I've already bought more and I'm sure I will keep buying them. I am super impressed with the formulas of these and I love the glitters. Aside from that the wear time is great on all the ones I've worn for more than a day. I love how huge the range of colors and finishes are with the line, well done Sephora lol! Formula X can be found on Sephora.com and in Sephora stores, prices range from $10.50-$12.50 depending on the polish.

  2. The matte glitters are really great! I live about 45 minutes from a Sephora, but I may have to save up for a trip soon!! =)

  3. Lightning, Maniacal, Outburst, and TNT are my faves. I like that the names of the polish are adjectives. I don't know why, lol.

  4. Great post, Jen! I was wondering how this line was going to be. You're right, Hyped is gorgeous! A must have for sure! :D

  5. Yay! I just saw the huge display in person last weekend, and I seriously want ALL THE POLISHES. They did such a great job with this brand re-boot!! Great swatch spam, now I have a better reference while I go Internet shopping :)

  6. LOL you certainly did go crazy - good job saving up all that money!! I was really impressed with the Formula X line too - it is EVERY. SINGLE. NAIL POLISH. TREND. in one large collection!! Good job Sephora. I find myself getting competitive whenever I shop the display, as I imagine some of the girls have never seen duo chromes or holos or glass-flecked polish, lol. Oh no - I am becoming a polish snob!! Anyhooo yes this collection is amazing and your swatches are beautiful! "Hyped" was never on my wishlist but it is now! I actually just picked up Crash yesterday and I love it! I have it layered over gray and it is sooo bright and gorgeously turquoise-d that I cant' stand it ;) I really want to pick up Maniacal and Thunder as well (Thunder totally looks like what an indie brand might do!) There are also some interesting duchromes in the Formula X line, and I have my eye on Grandiose (a rosey/bronze color shift). It's too much to take even for this polish addict!! LOL I am also enjoying the redesigned bottles and the fact the caps are removable. Thanks for posting these gorgeous swatches and for adding more colors to my must-buy list ;)

  9. "I was like holy moses get in my basket you beautiful gift from the Formula X gods." Hahahaha. This comment totally made me LOL. I was a bit apprehensive about these since their Sephora-branded makeup isn't all that great, but thanks for helping me change my mind!

  14. Great Factor X nail polish blog! I found out from YOU recently Sephora relaunched this nail polish, thank you, thank you! I'm OBSESSED with their nail polishes, top coat & base coat. I recently purchased 9 colors/special effect polishes & stocked up on their must have base/top coat for longevity. I've never had nail polish last for 6 days without chipping and still looks fab! I also get so many compliments, people ask me if I have them professionally done. lol I will be buying more, but still have 15 colors from the old Sephora X which are still good......no such thing as too many nail polishes though ;) Thanks again for this review!

  17. I must have Crash! Thanks so much for this posting! I feel a trip to Sephora coming on....

  18. I think Sephora should be paying you some sort of commission, because I just went out in a big storm and got absolutely soaked, but I'm happy because I got Maniacal and Crash. I cannot even believe what an improvement this is to their old Sephora by OPI line. They had those on sale 3/$9 once and out of their entire line I couldn't find 3 I liked enough to get the discount, even at that price. But man, I want all of these.

  19. i'm so VERY impressed with their new polishes! i know that i will be picking up a ton more of these! i bought blasted i think it is.. the all black glitter? i love it.

  20. Wow there are quite a few of these that I love! Especially the jellies with gltter, the cobalt blue glitter, and the neons with shimmer!

    ReplyDelete
  21. My biggest disappointment is my favorite color (Cold Hearted) from the original collection is gone :( I managed to buy a bottle from a blog sale but I know it's going to be a challenge to get another bottle. At least I have the new collection to cheer me up!

  22. Welp, there goes my self-restraint. BUY ALL THE POLISHES! (Just kidding, but I *will* buy many of them.)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Wow! Great stuff! Thanks for the swatches. Gonna get me some of these some time!

  24. Wow, there are a couple of polishes that went straight on my wish list! Lovely!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. those polishes are amazing i really love them and i bought a lot haha

  26. There are some really great polishes in there and I love how versatile the whole range is! Very unique and something different than the usual polishes released "for the public". Nice!

  27. Pics like these make me seriously gutted that Sephora no longer has stores in the UK :/ and that they don't ship here either.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Que cantidad de colores! menos los texturizados, me quedo con todos los demás. :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Sephora has a set of 22 minis for $55 for those who don't want full size bottles. It makes sense if you have a ton of polish and don't feel like you can finish a .4 oz bottle.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ugh. This makes me want them, but I'm so overwhelmed by how many there are!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Could you compare thrilling to OPI's my vampire is buff?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm so overwhelmed with all the choices!! All the polishes look amazing and highly pigmented.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I have Hyped & actually love it satiny, without top coat.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Absolutely love each and every swatches. Just need help deciding, what polish do you recommend as a gift for my mom, she likes frost polishes.. I plan on gifting the whole sephora nail care set, plus one selection of polish...FYI . She loves polishes but not too wild colors..something that's job friendly

  35. They have a bunch of "new neutrals" that she might like, I haven't tried them but I'm sure they are good!

  36. I just got a bottle of Cold hearted at Big Lots there were several bottles that I've seen in several stores.

  37. I just picked up a backup bottle of it from Big Lots last month. So unexpected but nice. Thanks for the heads up :)
