Essie Holiday 2013 Encrusted Treasures Collection Swatches

Happy Friday! Anyone have fun plans this weekend? I have a super busy weekend, tomorrow Degen and I are going to the VPI Pet Cancer Awareness Walk in Long Beach. I think it's going to be a lot of fun, I took Degen to this a few years back and am excited to take him again. I love supporting a good cause and it's fun because Degen gets to go play with other dogs while we take a nice walk along the harbor I'm sure I'll post some pictures from the walk on my Instagram so if you want to see them make sure to follow me @ThePolishAholic.

Onto nail polish, today I have the Encrusted Treasures Collection from Essie to share with you. This is the Holiday 2013 offerings from them. I have to say I only bought this collection because it looked so hideous in other swatches I've seen that I couldn't resist. Yes, I fully admit that sometimes I purchase things because they are so fug I have to share. When my local nail supply finally got these in the owner and I had a good laugh about this collection. He was telling me that another girl had come in before me saying she also wanted them because she had heard they were kinda ugly. I was like please tell me who she is, I'd probably get along with that person lol! The collection is 6 polishes in total, 2 textures (a first for Essie), and 4 glitters. Check out all the swatches after the jump.

Belugaria is a black texture polish with holographic hex glitter. Sometimes I get a polish and I think "what the f@!k is even happening here?!?" this is one of those polishes. There is just so much fug happening I can't even deal. The black texture on it's own wouldn't be bad, I liked the China Glaze and OPI versions of that, Essie went and added the holographic hex glitter and it went downhill from there. I feel like I should wear this with that white texture China Glaze put out for Hokiday and just blow peoples minds with overwhelming fug that kind of manicure would create.

Not only is this pretty ugly but the formula is terrible also, thick and chunky...very difficult to apply etc... I applied 1 coat and had a lot of patchy spots, when I went to apply a second coat it was impossible to get it on, the polish was like NOPE and wouldn't even spread onto the nail. I ended up having to dab the second coat onto the patchy spots. This was also very rough to the touch, more so than most texture polishes. The upside...it dried fast...yay?

Lighting: Shade
Below is Belugaria with top coat, it requires A LOT  of top coat to even get remotely smooth. I gave up after a coat of Gelous and 2 coats of KBShimmer Clearly On Top. Sadly I still find this extremely ugly even with top coat.

Hors D'oeuvres is a silver/gold shimmer and silver hex glitter. This can be worn on it's own or layered, I didn't care for it on it's own so I decided to layer it over Formula X Indelible. Sadly I don't really care for this layered either, it's just not my kind of glitter. The formula was good, for layering the glitter payoff was great, I used 1 coat over my base color. On it's own you'd probably need 3 coats to get it opaque.

Lighting: Shade
Ignite The Night is a silver and grey glitter. The glitter is pretty fine and fairly dense which makes it easy to get opaque on it's own. It kind of reminds me of last years Beyond Cozy (finish wise, not color wise), but I don't like it quite as much as Beyond Cozy. The formula was good, I feel like it's a bit too dense to layer but it might be good for doing gradients with! I used 2 coats on it's own + top coat for the photos below.

Lighting: Shade

Lots of Lux is a gorgeous blue texture with pops of gold shimmer. This is easily my favorite of the collection, if not one of my favorite Essie polishes of the year. It's weird how Essie can manage to make one of the ugliest and one of the prettiest texture polishes in one collection haha! The formula was great, it was a really nice consistency and easy to apply. I used 2 coats for the photos below, I had no issues with staining when I removed it.

Lighting: Shade
Below is Lots of Lux with top coat, it deepens up the blue a bit...I love this both with and without top coat.

On A Silver Platter is blue hex glitter in a shimmery golden base. I do not like this, at all. I feel like the gold shimmer completely overwhelms the polish and ruins what could have been really pretty with that blue glitter. I tried this on it's own also and disliked it even more that way. I used 1 coat over Formula X Dark Matter for the photos below.

Lighting: Shade

Lighting: Shade

Peak Of Chic is matte white bar glitter and holographic bar glitter in a clear base. I know a lot of people don't care of this type of glitter but I like it. I don't really *love* this combo, I prefer the glitters like this that have more colors of the bar glitter going on. The formula was good for layering, I used 1 coat over GlitterDaze Charming for the photos below. For wearing this on it's own I found it a bit challenging because the glitter all wanted to clump together, I wasn't happy with how it looked or applied that way.

Lighting: Shade
Overall I don't like this collection, with the exception of Lots of Lux, everything is either ugly or on the meh side. When things like this collection come out I usually wonder what the company was thinking, like did someone really look at Belugaria and think "yep, that is a beautiful polish'?!? As far as availability I don't know if these have hit drugstores or Ulta yet (it's been a while since I've been to those stores!). Essie retails for $8 a bottle.

  1. lol you are too funny!! That black polish is utterly terrible! I think it would have been really pretty if they had just made it a plain jelly polish and not a texture because it looks nice in the bottle

  2. I agree that the black one is pretty freaking weird - it looks a little like a caviar beads x glitter accident. LOVE Lots of Lux. The others are okay, I like some more than others. Even if the collection doesn't entirely work as a whole, I feel I have to commend Essie for doing something a little different and I hope they keep trying to be interesting!

  3. The way you described Belugaria made me laugh so much! A really strange polish for Essie to do...not like them at all!

  4. What a disappointment this collection is (with the exception of course of Lots of Luxe). Its so all over the place! Glitter toppers, textured polishes and bar glitter? way too much for one collection!

  5. OMG I love you. You are hilarious. I was curious to see how Lots of Lux looked, because I kind of liked the bottles shots I was seeing. I'm glad it's not terrible!

  6. Oh my gosh....this is the most hilarious collection I've ever seen....the blue is nice.

  7. Thank you for saving me so much money. I was so excited to hear Essie had branched out and done textures. All are ugly to me.

  8. I really like Lots of Lux, but I'm not a huge fan of the rest.

  9. I admit I liked On A Silver Platter in the bottle. If only the blue would show up more on the nail. The black texture is just a big NO, the rest is only meh :(

  10. As soon as I saw this post, I couldn't wait to click on it and see what you said about the black one. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse than the yeasty-looking ChG texture, here comes Belugaria! LOL!

  11. Hum - not feeling I would pick up any of these. Thanks for showing them to us however. Will save me from buying to look at only having to take them back to the drug store.

  12. I guess I must be crazy because I love how Belugaria looks(I also love the look of the white textured China Glaze too!)!

  13. Ok, this is going to sound stupid but I dedicated a blog post to you simply for the fact that you are so good at getting combos right for glitter toppers and I don't know you but I see you on Facebook all the time not like the other big bloggers. I did get a great combo with Sephora X Bionic and Zoya Cassedy. But I like I said before I see you on Facebook chatting not like the other big bloggers. There is one blogger who has stats less than mine and got a polish in the KB Sihimmer line. I don't know how your polish was the prettiest anyway. Can't wait to get mine and I hope you sell more than anybody else and that's about it for now.

  14. On Lots of Lux, did the top coat smooth out the texture feel? I love the color, but I'm not a fan of rough-to-the-tough nail polish like OPI's Liquid Sand collection.

  15. hahaha, literally every time i find a review for this collection, i read it with a cup of coffee in hand and laugh throughout. NO ONE likes it and it cracks me up. god. i half-way want the whole line just to say: yeah, i own this trainwreck collection. AND I AM PROUD.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think I must be the only one who actually likes Belugaria haha! I've ordered it (and Hors D'oeuvres) and really can't wait to try it despite reading all these reviews about it being horrible (both in looks and application)

  17. I've got to be honest: I love Belugaria because it was the one that ignited my impassioned hate for this collection before I got my hands on them. I can't explain why I liked this one and not the CG white abomination. I ended up liking 3 of the polishes with Lots Of Lux being my favorite. Also, if you got these at Imperial, I am pretty sure I'm the one he was talking about because we spent a good 30 minutes talking about how hideous these are and why anyone would want them. haha

  18. thanks for that posting. I didn't like the collection before and now still don't like it. thats good, because I can safe my money now :D

    ReplyDelete
  19. Haha that's a great idea to wear Belugaria with a CG white textured polish!! It would make a hell of a manicure!)

  20. You realize that what you've done here is make the fug look more than halfway decent, and now innocent people are going to take this stuff home. They won't read your awesome descriptions; they'll only see photos. And they'll buy the most awkwardly named polish in history. (I would have loved to be in the creative meeting when they brainstormed "Belugaria" and it made the shortlist.)

  21. My sister looked at your polish stash sheet and calculated you have approx. 2535 polishes!

  22. That black one looks like something you'll find next to dead animals or something. Disgusting-

The collection is srsly a joke, and how pricey they are just makes it worse. The only save is Lots Of Lux and maaaaaybe Peak Of Chic but it's just very whatever... Love your honest reviews! I would've honestly picked Belugaria lol!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Okay... that is a pretty awful collection. I will be saving my pennies for sure!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm actually wearing On A Silver Platter right now over My Vampire is Buff and I really like it. The nude base makes the gold shimmer turn into a purple color. The others were totally weird.

    ReplyDelete
  26. To be honest... I liked Belugaria best! I'll have to buy the bottle just to try it. I think it's the fact that it's just so damn weird that appeals to me.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh. My. If there are prizes given for ugliest polish collections of the year I think Essie's won it with this one.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think its a really nice collection. Ive noticed that if the blogger gives a bad review the commenters will hate it too.
I just came from reading a much more positive review and everyone seemed to like them. The glitters work well by themselves, especially with a matte top coat

    ReplyDelete
  29. Your Belugaria in the shade photo showcases its fug the best. It looks like a major caviar fail. Even a top coat couldn't save it. Hors D'oeuvres reminds me of A England's She Walks in Beauty which I just received and love.

  30. Requesting you do a swatch of a mani using Belugaria and that fugly CG textured polish, one of them as an accent nail. C'mon, please make my day!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I thought I was crazy too and the only one because I especially love the china glaze textured snow one! Lol

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks for a good chuckle Sat morning. I guess I have so many polishes that most things look the same to me, so it's kinda … refreshing to see some really weird stuff ! Nice try Essie. lol

    ReplyDelete
  33. LOL! Funniest post I've read in a while
And I must say that out of all the swatches I've seen so far, you got the nicest looking pictures of Belugaria

    ReplyDelete
  34. I really like the look of On A Sliver Platter - the combination of colours really appeals to me for some reason. Belugaria.... OMG. It makes your nails look so, I don't know, FAT. If you see what I mean. It's awful. And I imagine it took industrial strength remover to get off afterwards as well?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I really like the lots of lux one although it does look quite similar to OPI's 'get your number' liquid sand without the holo.
The rest of the collection is disappointing, more so because essie usually get it spot on.
    Jodi xx

    ReplyDelete
  36. I disagree, there are several people commenting that they like them. Glad you like the collection.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Have you seen the Essie ad for this collection? It shows them dribbling Belugaria out of the bottle into a spoon like it is caviar. Bwahahaha! It does look a bit like caviar. Not that I want that on my nails unless it is going in my mouth and is actually salty fish eggs...

    ReplyDelete
  38. Lots of Lux is gorgeous, but the rest.............puke. That black looks like an old bobbly sequin cardigan.

    ReplyDelete
  39. rats. i ordered them from Nordstrom. I can tell I won't have any use for them. at all.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I feel like Belugaria would be so much prettier without the texture. I nearly died when I saw the bottle, and was so disappointed by the way it looks on the nail.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh Jen, Jen, Jen.....the black one is so fugly. I got it in the mail yesterday...but I have to say I like all the silvers. DIdn't buy the bar glitter tho cuz my nails don't seem to like to spend time under bars. But I have a feeling that one or some of the silvers are going to be similar to some of the new Sephora X, also on order since I can't drive right now and my husband is putting off going downtown. There's not many X swatches online so I'll just show him and order everything....and yet, I digress. the black is going back, and I'm going to have to order the blue. I thought the blues were re-releases but I see I am wrong. Thanks for this funny post. Funny and informative, just how I like them!

  42. Lots of Lux is pretty, I disagree about On A Silver Platter as I think it looks very pretty over the black color you layered it over. Very weird about the names, like why name a primarily gold polish 'On A Silver Platter' lol. Or Belugaria, I think the NAME'S uglier than the polish! I do like Hors D'Oeuvres, I 'may' get it but I'll have to see it in person first. By your pretty work though you'd never know most of these are ugly! :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. No you're not. I bought it based on raves from other blogs and my boyfriend loved it so much that i'm wearing it now. He raves that it is chic with some gothic edge. He LOVES the texture. This from the man who hates it when I wear black and loves me in pink! Even my mom thinks that it looks elegant. It's not for everyone, but you're not alone. :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I got it yesterday and I absolutely love it!! Your boyfriend is right! It is chic with and edge! Perfect!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Maybe it's just the photo you took but I think the photos of Belugaria in the sunlight actually look really pretty. Thank goodness it has a terrible formula or I might be buying another bottle of polish I don't need. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Lol I've seen so many people who love Belugaria it's crazy! Your review of it had me laughing. Especially when you said you should pair it with the white textured CG. Ha! Lots of Lux is gorgeous though!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I wish I had seen this post before I bought the black one. Usually bottles of textured polishes are labelled in some way. This was not and I thought it was just a cool black polish with sparse bits of hex glitter. I was kind of horrified when I discovered the texture (apparently I have to read displays a lot more carefully these days).

    ReplyDelete
  48. ESSIE WHY
I usually love their polishes and am practically a collector. I don't want aaaaany of these.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yes, thirded!
Every time I see this fugly color, I immediately think of that CG. Ugh. But together!!!

  50. I'll shiw my bf this comment. He'll feel so vindicated :) ty

  51. I'm so glad i read this review before I dropped money on 4 of these. When I saw them at Ulta this past weekend, I was thinking "finally, something interesting from Essie". But after seeing them swatched, no thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Excellent review. I appreciate your opinions. Thank you very much!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I think I need my temperature taking because I really liked the look of Belugaria. I'm addicted to the ugly!!

    ReplyDelete
  54. As usual, your pics are gorgeous! I have to admit, I am loving all of these! I do have a texture obsession though. I cannot wait till the weekend when I can take my B2G1 coupon to Ulta!

  55. Oh and I also love that CG white one! :-D
