2013 Mainstream Brand Favorites!

Can you believe it's the last day of 2013?!? Where has this year gone, seriously, it feels like 2012 just ended like last week. Overall this has been a great year for me, I hope it has been for you also. I feel like a lot of blogging dreams came true this year, but aside from that personally I feel like it was a good year for me. 2013 was the year I killed my anxiety...I don't talk about it much (ever?) on here but anxiety had been ruling my life for the past 5 years, I had stomach issues a few years ago and it triggered debilitating anxiety that was affecting my life and job. I finally kicked it in the ass this year thanks to an amazing doctor who finally found something that worked for me, I feel like a new person...I honestly never thought I would feel "normal" again so just that alone has made this a great year for me. I hate to get mushy but I really do want to thank you all for reading and commenting on my blog and talking to me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc...even though this ended up being a good year it was hard for me in the beginning and talking to you guys and knowing people look forward to my posts is what got me through some difficult times, I can't express how much I appreciate that.

Onto less serious things...nail polish...lets talk about Mainstream favorites shall we? Overall I was all about indies this year...I actually had a bit of a difficult time thinking of polishes to put on this list. I even though about including 2 of my favorites from last year because they are still my 2 favorite polishes ever (OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls and Nails Inc Baker Street in case you're wondering). Then I made my list and it was all textures so I was like really Jen? All Textures? No. I ended up going through all of my old posts and rediscovering some polishes I loved and had forgotten about...they have now been pulled from the Helmer so I can wear them again and remember how much I liked them! Check out all my favorites after the jump, to see the original posts about these just click on the name of the polish!

Avon Saturn. The whole Cosmic Collection from Avon was a surprise favorite for me, I guess I never really associated them with nail polish until that collection. Saturn was my favorite from it because it's such a gorgeous orange and the scattered holo was gorgeous!

China Glaze Boo-Gie Down. The Halloween Collection from China Glaze was their strongest of the year for me, as a whole it was the collection I enjoyed the most. My favorite from it was Boo-Gie Down, I really like the glitter combo China Glaze did with this one!

China Glaze Budding Romance. YUS murky green, what's not to love?!? China Glaze does weird colors like this so well, I wish they would do more of them.

Deborah Lippmann Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree. For me Deborah Lippmann= interesting glitters. This polish is no exception to that, I think it's perfectly balanced between the black base and the red and green glitter.

Essie Lots of Luxe. There were a lot of blue textured polishes this year but after putting them side by side Essie has won for my favorite of them!

Formula X Hyped. Overall Formula X knocked my socks off when they debuted this Fall. I have tried a lot from the brand and am pretty impressed, Hyped is my super standout from them. The shade of purple and the shimmer is all kinds of fantastical!

Maybelline Mod Moss. Maybelline is one of those brands I always see when I go to Rite Aid but it's rare that anything from them catches my eye, earlier this year when they put out their Vintage Leather Collection this was the one I immediately picked up. It's ok matte but it's all kinds of gorgeous with top coat also!

OPI A Woman's Prague-ative. I really liked the majority of the Euro Centrale Collection from OPI but this was a standout for me. It's such a rich coppery orange, totally gorgeous and up my alley!

OPI Alcatraz...Rocks! This is one of my favorite textures of the year...it's super complex with all the different colors going on in here. It's also gorgeous with and without top coat.

OPI This Gown Needs A Crown. This was a surprise favorite for me, silvers aren't usually something I'm drawn to but the finish of this is what did me in. This dries down to a bit of a satin finish, which is hard to see in photos, it's unlike any other silver I have!

OPI What Wizadry Is This? I love a good brown and OPI made one with this polish. This is a texture but I much prefer it with top coat, as shown below.

Zoya Carter.  This is the first of 3 PixieDust polishes on my favorite list, Zoya pretty much killed it with Textures this year. I know that not everyone likes them but I looooooove them and Zoya made so many beautiful ones!

Zoya Chita. Green and texture...sold! I believe we renamed this Jen right? lol

Zoya Chyna. Normally I'm not a red girl but this is just perfection in the form of texture

Zoya Dream. Oh hey look...a Zoya that isn't a PixieDust...see I liked other stuff from them too haha! Dream is a gorgeous blue scattered holo, it has so much depth to it, I find myself grabbing for it quite a bit!

Hope you all enjoyed my favorites, please let me know what your favorites were this year. I bet you'll remind me of polishes I've forgotten! Hope you all have a fun and safe New Years Eve, see you in 2014!!

Happy New Year! You worked really hard on your blog this year. So many great reviews, so many superb photos and true-to-the-fact descriptions. Your swatches and reviews are my most reliable source of information about this or that polish. May the next year bring you joy, happiness and lots of great polishes!

  6. Jen, it's really inspiring to hear about your anxiety. I have almost the same problem (including the stomach issues among other things) and it's amazing to know there are other people out there who feel the way I do. Please keep on blogging, your swatches are some of my favorites out there!

  12. For me personally it was the Avon Cosmic collection (yes people Saturn is THAT gorgeous!) and the Pixel FX line from Orly. Bought a couple from each of these two collections to try and was so impressed I went back and gradually got the whole set of both lines. That doesn't happen all that often lol! Now when I get some spare $$ to blow on polish I'll get the entire Color Club 2013 Halo Hues line to complete my 2012 set! Thanks for your work all year Jen have a happy new year, glad to hear your stomach issues have improved! :)

  13. The SpaRitual Illuminate collection is incredible- such magical shimmers! They're sheer, but I bet "Intellect" would be stunning over your Baker Street :) Butter London "Buckie" was a surprise for me, I randomly painted it on at the Seattle Airport and its glow-iness blew me away. In Europe they had L'Oreal "Island in the Sun", a gorgeous blue-green-pink multichrome which is all kinds of fun. And lastly Zoya "Mosheen"; I didn't think I'd like it but I mean THE SPARKLE, and also I just saw Frozen and seeing as it's just like Elsa's dress... so Mosheen is now obsession status for me :)

I just bought Hyped on Saturday! I knew I was going to Sephora and I remembered your post so I made a quick check back in your archives and now Hyped is mine!! :D

  21. I ended up buying Formula X Hyped because of your post on it. It was the first one I grabbed! I haven't worn it yet, but I'm sure I will love it. Oh man...I was just talking about all my stomach issues and how much they ruin my life. Now that I will have health insurance again in January, I need to get it all straightened out because I'm tired of feeling shitty 24/7.

  22. I miss you doing more mainstream polishes! The Indies are so cool, but I love seeing things I can actually buy!

  24. My faves were Zoya Pixie Dust Tomoko, Maybelline Color Show Drops of Jade, ALL Deborah Lippmans, Chanel Graphite, and OPI Kiss Me At Midnight which I bought solely because of your swatches! I had a bad experience with the previous MC OPI collection and was hesitant to buy another until I saw how beautiful it was on here! Thanks for showing me all the beautiful polish!

  25. Kicking myself on the Avons, I finally went to order then the other night when NouveauCheap mention a promo code, and some are no longer available like the purple and bluer-blue. I picked up the rest for half price each what they were originally...but doesn't look like the others are out there on eBay or anything, ah well!

    Happy new year!!

  26. I used to have stomach issues as well. When I was 19 I was "diagnosed" with ulcers. I say it that way because the doctor listened to my symptoms, took a blood test to see if I had an infection, and decided it must be ulcers. He told me to take some tums and try not to be so stressed. That's it, no other tests or anything. Nothing I have ever taken has gotten rid of the pain once it starts. Not Zantac, prilosec, etc. All I could do was not eat until the pain stopped. Which would make me sick from being so hungry. After 14 years of constant pain, and anxiety/depression from it, about a year ago I read a post on the internet about food sesitivities, especially to wheat. Since I gave up wheat, no more constant heartburn, and no more "ulcer" pain! Every now and again I have a cookie or some bread, and without fail, I get heartburn and sometimes intense stomach pain. It doesn't always turn out to be wheat, some people I know have been sensitive to dairy, or nightshades (potato & tomato family), etc. I tell everyone my story, because NO ONE should ever have to deal with that kind of pain. Hope it helps :)

  27. WOW! I can totally relate to the frustration you've gone through. I went to so many doctors trying to figure out what my pain was from. Mine felt like I was having a gallbladder attack (even after I had my gallbladder removed). I went to a doctor who tested me to ever food allergy possible and even that came back as a no. It's pretty much gone away now that my anxiety is under control, I guess I was having so much anxiety about getting the pain that it was actually causing it! I'm glad you were able to figure out what was causing you pain so you could tweak your diet to help!

I just picked up Dream (along with 8 other Zoya Polishes) post Christmas and I LOVE it. And it is SO durable! I didn't have any chipping or peeling with it at all.

  29. Great picks Jen! I am happy you managed to get through a difficult part of your life and that it made you a happier person - anxiety can be such a bish! I struggle with anxiety attacks from time to time, I recognize them perfectly but once you are in the moment you just can't turn back the switch huh :(?

  30. I am so happy for you - getting anxiety under control and finding the right doctor are literally like winning the lottery! :D I totally understand. My story is way too long to write in a comment but...I totally understand. I suffered for so long...experienced so much horrifying pain... I am so happy to say that I found an amazing doctor who began to help me in 2009. Since then I have made huge strides and my anxiety is truly, truly under control. I never thought I would ever say those words. Ever. My stomach led to my anxiety too!!! These days, it is finally calm. I also never thought I would say that! My stomach has been a mess for as far back as I can remember. I am so happy to be able to do things like a normal person and be okay! I don't have crippling anxiety/panic attacks and horrifying stomach pain ruling my life anymore. (((HUGE HUGS))) I'm soooooooooo happy for you!!! I know how horrible it is...and to be able to overcome it...it's everything!!! (((MOAR HUGS))) Sorry for the long comment but it just really hit home to read this post. Happy 2014, Jen!!! :D I'll be reading!

P.S. I lol'ed so hard at the 'all texture list', hahaaa! I could have a favorites of just Pixie Dusts - I own every color and looooooove them. I hope they make more colors! :D

  31. Love these year end posts! I definitely feel you on the anxiety. I suffered through from 4th-11th grade. I don't share much about it either, but I appreciate you speaking up about it! I fell in love with textures too! My list would be composed of all indie glitters and mainstream textures lol!

  32. I have six of the polishes that you listed and I adore them. Zoya was pretty amazing in 2013, huh? Payton was another Zoya that I adored. They are my favorite mainstream brand. OPI Jinx was a surprise favorite for me as well.
