OPI Gwen Stefani Collection Swatches

Hi guys! Hope you all had a great weekend, mine was really nice! The most exciting thing though was finding the Gwen Stefani Collection at my local nail supply. I don't think I have ever been so excited for a collection. Gwen Stefani has pretty much my favorite singer since I was 11, Tragic Kingdom by No Doubt was the first album I ever bought and I've seen them live more times than I can count on fingers and toes...I also have 2 No Doubt tattoos! Pretty much anyone that knows me in real life knows that the 2 things I love most are No Doubt and nail polish haha!

Anyway, when I heard OPI was collaboration with Gwen on a collection I pretty much died from fangirling. I've been stalking calling  my local nail supply every couple days for WEEKS asking about this collection and when I called on Saturday and the owner said they got them I hauled booty over there and snatched up whole collection, the owner even gave me an empty display to have...he's pretty much the best lol!

Check out all the swatches & reviews after the jump!

4 In The Morning is a black satin. This is a black base with a soft silver shimmer that dries down to a satin matte finish. In lower lighting, like the shade, you can't see the silver shimmer and it looks like a flat black. I really like this both with and without top coat! The formula was good, it was a really nice consistency and easy to apply. The opacity was also good and it dried pretty quickly. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Lighting: Shade

Hey Baby is a bright pink creme. Nothing ground breaking here in terms of color but the formula and consistency of the polish were nice. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

I Sing In Color is a dark vampy red. This is very dark and pretty much looks black in most lighting, even direct sunlight, but you can see the red peeking out around the edges of the nail. The formula was good, it was nice and opaque and I had no issues with application. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

In True Stefani Fashion is a glitter bomb with silver and holographic glitter. This is super glitter dense, you could probably get it opaque on it's own if you really wanted to. The formula was good, it wasn't thick and the glitter payoff was great. I used 1 coat over 4 In The Morning for the photos below.

Lighting: Shade

Love.Angel.Music.Baby is a gold satin matte. I'm not normally a gold girl but dannnnnnngggggg...I love this. The finish is gorgeous matte and I also love it with top coat. The formula was a touch thick but very easy to apply and super opaque. This could easily be a 1 coater, I did 2 coats just to amp it up a bit. This also dried relatively quickly. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Over & Over A-Gwen is a red creme. Normally I'm like meh about reds but I really can't imagine a Gwen Stefani Collection without a red. Over & Over A-Gwen is truly special in this collection, it comes in a collectors box and includes Swarovski studs & crystals. Because of that this does retail for a bit more than the other polishes in this collection. I've put some photos of the box and the contents of the box below, I really like the little pamphlet it comes with that gives some good ideas for nail art! The formula of this polish was good, it was a good consistency and the opacity was nice. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Push and Shove is a silver chrome. This polish comes in a duo with a mini sized base coat called Lay Down That Base. This is meant to be worn without top coat and according to OPI for only 1 night. I've heard from others that the wear isn't good with this, I decided to give it a little test. I wore this on it's own without top coat for a little over 22 hours and had slight tip wear and minor chipping along the free edge of my nails. During that time I did all my normal stuff, went to target, typed up most of this post etc.. nothing too crazy that involved using my hands/nails.

Because this is a chrome I was expecting Lay Down That Base to be a ridge filling base coat, but it's not.  I used 1 coat of Lay Down That Base and let it dry for about 5 minutes then applied 2 thin coats of Push and Shove for the photos below. I have to say, not a fan of this....like pretty much every other chrome it dries with brush strokes and shows every imperfection on the nail.  Other than that the formula was good, it was super opaque and could be a 1 coater.

Please excuse the background loll

Since I wasn't happy with Push and Shove I decided to do some experimenting. I tried using it with a ridge filling base coat (Butter London Nail Foundation) and WOW what a mess..maybe it was user error but using Push and Shove over the other base made application a nightmare. It was patchy and the polish would drag right off if you went over a spot more than one...it just looked like crap. Then I tried sponging it on, I feel like every time I post a chrome/frost I get comments from you guys telling me to try sponging on the final coat to eliminate brush strokes. Well that was a big fail too, maybe someone can point me in the direction of a good tutorial for that technique?

Overall I like the collection, it's not groundbreaking in terms of colors but I like all the different finishes OPI gave us and the bottles are super cute. I love how they have a sleeve that's all geometric and says the finish of the polish along with if you should wear it without top coat...I think that's helpful for people who aren't necessarily into polish but are buying these because of Gwen.

My picks from the collection are Love.Angel.Music.Baby and 4 In The Morning. The Gwen Stefani Collection will be available in January and each polish retails for $9. Over & Over A-Gwen retails for $14.95! I have already seen them online at Ulta.com but I'm not sure about the availability in stores.

Also, just for fun here is my display which is now residing on top of my Alex! I'm so happy the guy at my nail supply gave this to me :D

  1. Love.Angel.Music.Baby is so purdy, with out without a top coat! <3 I think I need to get that one ASAP. Over & Over A-Gwen is awesome too but I don't fancy paying extra for the studs and stuff. >_<

  2. Oh wow I love all of the colors! They didn't arrive here yet so I'm still waiting.

  3. I have heard that if you use a base that is ridge filling and than lay down the base it works well. I'm not a fan of chromes myself because I find the end look not worth the fussiness of the polish, and I'll go for nail strips if I want the chrome look!! :) - Great review and sqatches as usual!!

  4. I really love that they're releasing more satin matte polishes!

  5. Hmmmm . . . I'm kind of surprised. I expected so much more from a Gwen collab. The colours aren't bad, just not special. How does Over & Over A-Gwen compare to Essie's Jelly Apple or Zoya's Sookie? I would love a comparison post if possible :)

  6. I'm going to have to give that combo a try!

  7. Great pics as always. I was curious about this collection when I saw it advertised in a magazine. They all look great except for Push and Shove. I have to say I've never seen a polish that the actual directions say it's only for one night only wear. Interesting!

  8. I have to buy all of these. I freaking love Gwen Stefani & No Doubt, so yes, even though these colors are *that* special, I will be buying all of them! haha!

  9. Great swatches of this collection!

  10. I'm a MAJOR ND fan too; Gwen has been one if my faves for a long time, too. I LOOOOOVE her style, but I like her music more when she's singing w/ the ND boys.
What's your fave ND album? I think mine is "Rock Steady", but it's so hard to choose!
they are AWEsome live! I haven't seen them as many times as you have though---JEALOUS! :P
I have been waiting for years, literally, for a polish collab with Gwen! I was prepared to drop a pretty penny for this collex, but honestly, none of them are calling me, and in case I needed another reason to abstain, I have been on a makeup BINGE lately, mostly indie pushes, but also shadow palettes.

OK, your next post MUST showcase those ND tats! No joking around here!

  11. My favorite is Return of Saturn! My tattoos are one of the notes from a line from Artificial Sweetener going around my wrist and the other is the ND logo they had flashing behind them when they took their bows during their 2009 tour

  12. I sort of expected more from this collection. I'm a little underwhelmed! I love Gwen + No Doubt though, Tragic Kingdom is my jam 4eva & eva.

  13. Oh god, what a amazing collection! I can't wait till I can buy it!

  14. Yeah. I'm still on the fence about Push and Shove. But I think I feel kind of cheated by OPI with all the secrecy and hype that they put on it when they announced this set. They made it seem like it was going to be SO different and amazing and it's not. And then to top it off you cant even wear it that long. So I don't know if I will buy it. That one and Love.Angel.Music.Baby were the only 2 that were sold out at my store.

HOWEVER. I did buy the first 4 polishes you reviewed in this post and I've worn two of them and I adore them. 4 in the morning is beautiful without the topcoat and Hey Baby, though it's certainly not a new shade is very cute and bright.

I haven't decided if I am going to buy Over and Over A Gwen yet, would you say that the crystals could be used more than once? Because being the cheap-o I am I wouldn't want to just toss them after one use. Hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  15. If you attach them with top coat you could probably use them more than once but if you attached them with the glue int he kit you'd probably only get 1 use out of them

    ReplyDelete
  16. I adore Gwen & ND, and was so anxious to see this collection. It's disappointing that it's so meh. I'll probably pick up that black and Love.Angel.Music.Baby, but the others just seem done. Beautiful swatches though, of course!

  17. I kind of want all of these just because they are Gwen! I sort of feel like these aren't that original though so I don't really need them. They definitely depict her style though, unlike the Mariah Carey collection which was a bit all over the place xx

    ReplyDelete
  18. With the push and shove, have you tried the ridge filler, than the base coat it came with, then the color?

    ReplyDelete
  19. not yet, it's on my list to try now though!

    ReplyDelete
  20. i bought the glitter, the black satin and LAMB (and i'm currently wearing it as i type! i'm in love with it)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Is I Sing In Color a dupe for Chanel Rouge Noir? I've never seen a passable dupe for it and its my absolute favourite colour...but so expensive. It would be nice to see them compared!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I don't own that polish, I have no idea...sorry

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm rather meh about the whole collection. Tired of holiday/winter polishes. I can barely contain myself until the Spring collections start coming out. Curious to see if the Radiant Orchid color will catch on. Also curious to see there will be a standout polish this spring/summer (thinking along the lines of Turquoise & Caicos, or Flip Flop Fantasy).

    ReplyDelete
  24. so excited to get this collection, your review really helped me in deciding which colors to get. I just found out my local beauty supply got them in tonight! Getting all the colors tomorrow except for the push and shove..

    ReplyDelete
  25. Love.Angel.Music.Baby is gorgeous! I love golds like that.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Your swatches are impeccable and amazing!! These are cute polishes and I like the collection but I feel like I've seen all of the polishes before.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I LOVE the satin polishes in this collection. They're incredible. it's about time OPI put out some of those.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I was curious about Push and Shove but now when I see it I think I like my Layla mirrors more. But like you I also love the gold one.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Feeling the same way about P&S. Seriously I was starting to expect it to be like an actual mirror on your nails or something! The hype & secrecy was overdone, at least for those of us deep in the polish world... Someone who just dabbles in polish and only buys a few mainstream brands might be more wowed by this. I'm happy with my Layla chromes fortunately!

I was thinking LDTB would be ridge-filling, too. Guess not!

But I do agree that 4itM looks sooo beautiful! I'm a sucker for blacks, though. =)

I was thinking it looked like Chanel Vamp 18. The dark red/black that was worn in Pulp Fiction. In 1994 next to nobody was wearing any "odd" colors & I remember my manicurist hand mixed colors to try & reproduce it. Well, she tried it on me & everyone thought I was such a weirdo wearing a color that looked like dried blood. Ha ha!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Tragic Kingdom is one of the best albums of our generation. It doesn't have much to do with these polishes (besides involving Gwen), but it just needs to be said.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thank you for comparing the Butter London Polish for me. I must get this Butt Bootie Naked.

    ReplyDelete
  33. OMG I am a huge NoDoubt and Gwen fan too! My license plate says NODoubt. hahah!
I have also bee stalking my nail supply place for this collection. Got a call from my sister this morning that she found it! So we are purchasing all the colors, so excited to try it them!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Awesome! I'm jealous of your license plate!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I like 4 In The Morning, but overall I am slightly disappointed with this collection. I had hoped something with Gwen's name on it would be more funky and different.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Do you own any dupes for Over and Over A Gwen? It's such a beautiful red, but I just can't justify the price tag and honestly would never use the crystals.
Also, could you post pics of your No Doubt tats?!? I love tattoos and would really like to see them. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I love Gwen Stefani but I will probably only pick up 4 In The Morning because I think I can find most of the colors already in my polish collection. I'm curious, how does Push and Shove compare to Moonraker from the Bond collection? I would love to pick up Over and Over A-Gwen but I know I wont use the crystals or studs so I can't justify the price!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I don't own Moonraker anymore so I can't compare them but the formula of Push & Shove is about a billion times better

    ReplyDelete
  39. You have officially convinced me to get the collection! LOL these swatches are simply GORGEOUS <3

    ReplyDelete
  40. The Sally Hansen chromes from the late 90's were marketed as "nail makeup" that was to be worn like makeup, ie for a short time.

    ReplyDelete
  41. You are actually making me want the black now! Along with the gold, the hot pink and maybe the red just because of the awesome box :).

    ReplyDelete
  42. Too bad the thermals weren't as color changing as you hoped, though I love the shades they are on you!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Both satin polishes are gorgeous (especially the gold). I actually don't have a glitter bomb mix quite like True Stefani Fashion, and I've been looking for a pretty straight-forward silver glitter/holo-y combo, so I might pick that one up. Otherwise, this collection is a pass for me. The package and marketing ROCK, and Gwen Stefani is simply amazing. But I am not a big enough fan of Gwen or No Doubt (even though Tragic Kingdom defined early junior high school for me!) to want to purchase for the inspiration alone (which I've certainly done for other polishes). But your swatches are impeccable as always!! I am just not that drawn to most of these colors =/

  44. Wicked big No Doubt fan since 1992 and I love them as a Band. Not a fan of Gwen solo at all or the new album kinda which they would go back to being the real No Doubt. Anyone else notice that 4 in the morning has a tinge of holographic in it? I love holographic nail polish.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm not a big Gwen solo fan either. I saw her live on both of the tours she did during that time but..meh. I'll always love the band though

    ReplyDelete
  46. OMG! Thanks for the sharing the swatches for this collection! Specially the "Over & Over A-Gwen" I've been looking for someone who can take pictures of the box and the details inside it and not just only swatch. Awesomeness =D I just have a little question =D It may sound dumb to ask but I'll ask anyways XD Is the Over & Over A-Gwen worth the price?

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  47. P.S. I just notice right now, the "Push and Shove" is somewhat same with the Essie Metallic Collection =D

    ReplyDelete
  48. If you're buying it for the color no but if you're buying it for the collectors aspect then yes

    ReplyDelete
  49. Thanks for the info =D

    ReplyDelete
  50. Not loving these, so many dupes of other colours, SAD FACE! :(

    ReplyDelete
  51. 4in the Morn and Love, Angel are real gems. That black has the best finish and formula I've seen in a long while. Push and Shove is impressive, no doubt lol. Way better than Essie's chromes and on par if not a touch better than Layla. But with all great chromes, you're lucky if you get 24 hours out of it. Seriously, if you wave to someone a bit too enthusiastically it chips. It spontaneously evaporates I swear. The saleslady at the beauty supply said it lasts longer without the lay down base. I can't see how that could be? Over and over a-Gwen is a 99.9% dupe of Big Apple Red IMO. Thanks for the great review:)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Is zoya dovima a dupe for 4 in the morning?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Do you think Push and Shove could be a dupe of Essie's Mirror Metallics "No Place Like Chrome"? I would love to see a comparison, especially since Essie's price tag is much better and you can probably get it at a local CVS/Walgreens. I think tons of people are debating paying the price for OPI since it got mixed reviews - I'm one of them :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Or even China Glaze Khrome Collection's "Millennium"? Just trying to think of dupes for your readers (and maybe a comparison post :) )
