Essie Neon 2014 Too Taboo Collection Swatches & Review

Hi guys! Today I have the Essie Neons for 2014, I believe this collection is called Too Taboo, that's what the display said anyway! I bought these the other day at my local nail supply after waffling about getting them. I've seen a few reviews and most of them said the formula was pretty terrible for most of these so I was all set to not get them, then I went and saw them in person and my self control went out the window and I bought them all. Luckily I didn't think the formulas were that bad so I'm glad I got them! If there are any comparisons you'd like to see for these make sure to leave them in the comment section. Check out all the swatches & reviews after the jump!

As is the case with most neon shades, they are difficult to capture with a camera. Most of these were brighter in person. All my swatches are the polish on their own, you could layer them over white if you wanted them to pop more but I didn't feel that any of these needed a white base. I used top coat for all my swatches, all photos are in natural sunlight.

Chills & Thrills is a dusty cobalt blue. This is much dustier than something like Nails Inc Baker Street but it's in the same kind of color family so if you like those types of blues you'll like this. The formula was a little thin but I had no issues with application and the opacity was good. You do want to be quick when applying this one, I noticed that it did bald a little if you went over the same spot twice. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

I'm Addicted is an aqua blue. This is one of the brighter shades in the collection but not really what I would call a neon. The formula was good, it was a little sheer but easy to build and I had no application issues. I used 3 coats for the photos below.

Serial Shopper is a bright orange. This isn't your typical neon orange, it's more muted and lighter. I really enjoy the color, it reminds me of a brighter version of OPI's Where Did Suzi's Man-Go which was one of my favorite polishes from this Spring. The formula was sheer but buildable, it was a little thick but in a good way that gave me no issues. I didn't have any problems with this being streaky or uneven. I used 3 coats for the photos below.

Sittin' Pretty is a bright lavender. I feel like I probably already have a couple polishes like this one but I still love it. Purples like this are always so flattering on my skin tone and I always get compliments when I wear them. The formula was good, it was sheer on the first coat but easy to build and opaque with 3 coats.

Too Taboo is a fuchsia creme. I was hoping this would be a bit brighter than it ended up being, Essie describes it as "florescent fushia berry" and I definitely don't see anything florescent about this. The formula was good, it was the most opaque of the collection and I had no issues with application. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Vices Versa is a lime green. This is the most typical neon of the bunch, I think this one is the one that would benefit most from a white base to make it pop. The formula was good, it was sheer but buildable. I would recommend using a light hand when applying this, I didn't have any issues with it being streaky but it's the type of green that can be. I used 3 coats for the photos below.

Overall I like this collection but I'm not blown away by it. I don't really think any of these are what I would classify as neon. For me, neon is something that hurts my eyes to look at. These are just bright. I am glad that I picked them up despite all the negative reviews I had seen, sometimes what doesn't work for one person works for another and vice versa. I think these will be fun for nail art, I've already used 3 of them for what was one of my favorite gradients ever, you can see it on my Instagram here.

The Essie Neons for 2014 should be available this month at stores like Ulta, they retail for $8.50. I actually thought they were still $8 a bottle but Essie.com says MSRP is $8.50 so I guess they raised their prices?

  1. Is it me or is Too Taboo just like DJ Play That Song from last year's neon collection? I still love it anyway. I think I'm gonna get Sittin' Pretty for sure.

  3. Could you compare Too Taboo with OPI Dim Sum Plum and Chills&Thrills with other Essie cobalt blues (Last year's neon, for example)?

  4. and Sittin Pretty with Play Date?

  6. These are pretty, but they are the most un-neon "neons" I've ever seen!

I might invest in Chills & Thrills, because it looks simular to OPI Dating a Royal but I want to see it in person first. The rest..... meh, been there done that, everyone is doing a Neon/brights collection this year

  13. I think these colors are gorgeous! Although I disagree with the name of the collection "Too Taboo". A collection with that name shouldn't be all cremes! Lol! But your swatches are gorgeous, despite Essie's weird naming of them. :D

  14. I'm sure these will be a big success in Austria, because they're not neon and people here tend to pick safer colors rather than exciting ones.. I personally will be skipping this collection, as all the colors look a bit been there done that to me.
Your gradient with these colors is indeed very pretty, I have to admit that :D

  15. I LOVE these colors!! Gorgeous swatches - I am glad you decided to pick them up! ;) "I'm Addicted" might be my dream color, and "Sittin' Pretty" is...well...very pretty too, lol! I would love to see "Sittin' Pretty" compared to the original Picture Polish Wisteria (I am still bummed they reformulated it) and to Zoya Perrie, if you have them. Thanks Jen! ;)

  17. I liked these colours, but like you mentioned, they're not really anything special-just typical neons, which necessarily isn't bad, because you did mention that the quality was great.

  18. This actually reminds me of a Wet n Wild collection that came out last year. Except Essie added another purple instead of a white.

  19. I agree with everything you posted. When I saw the swatches of this collection, I ordered them all. When I read so many bad reviews, I was really worried about having bought them all. I didn't find the application that bad, either. I just used a thicker coat than normal. I found they levelled nicely. I also love that they're bright without being TOO neon.

  20. Agreed, not neon but not bad either! My picks would be Chills & Thrills and Serial Shopper. Glad the formula worked well for you!

  21. Not a huge fan of neons in theory so these were "friendlier". But I didn't care too too much for this series, I will skip these but I might go back and buy Style hunter. Too taboo looks like the creme version of girls are out (summer 2013) which had the shimmer that was better. Have you compared In the cabana to I'm addicted? They seem pretty close.

I'm Addicted looks quite similar to Laguna Blue by Essie which I have. Nice colours, but they probably should have called it the Brights collection rather than neon.

  23. I have been a huge Essie fan for the past 3-4 years and have always loved their colours but could probably say that the formula hasn't always been the best. I decided to try China Glaze nail polish for the first time ever a few months ago and ordered their City Flourish collection, and I have since been a China Glaze convert. I looked at these swatches when Essie first released this line and have been having a really hard time deciding if I want them or not. I love the colours, but like a few others have said, they look so similar to other colours out there. I did however pick up Sittin' Pretty on a whim the other day and I absolutely love it. Purple is my favourite colour and sometimes I have a hard time finding the right shade of people that I like. I did two coats and didn't find I needed another one. After looking at these swatches again and reading your review and everyone else's comments I may end up buying Too Taboo and I'm Addicted. The other colours I think I can live without (for now :P). Thank you for your blog as well, I look to see if you've done swatches or a review on any nail collections I am thinking about getting before I purchase them!
