The PolishAholic Pad, Before!

Welp, it's official guys...I am an adult now. I closed escrow on my condo yesterday and am officially a homeowner! I thought I'd show you guys a bunch of "before" photos of my condo! I'm re-doing like 90% of the place so when I'm done it will look a lot different! Right now it's in need of some major TLC, the carpet is pretty gross and all the tile looks like it hasn't been cleaned in like a year...nasty. As I go I'll probably be posting about it on Instagram and Twitter then I'll do a big "after" post here!

I bought a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom condo, its about 845 sqft...not huge but enough room for me and Degen and that's all I need at the moment...plus it was all I could afford. Buying real estate in Southern California is kind of outrageous. I was watching House Hunters the other day and a couple in Texas bough a 3800 sqft house for less than I paid for my condo...how depressing. Before I move in I'm putting in dark vinyl plank flooring everywhere except for the bathrooms and repainting the entire place!

Big apologies for the crappy lighting in most of the photos, I need to go buy some lamps like right now.

First up is the master bedroom, when you walk in the photo below is what it looks like to the left...I'll probably put my bed here. The rest of the room is long and skinny...apparently I didn't take a picture of it in its entirety...my bad. A+ for the broken blinds, good thing I work at a place that does window coverings haha

At the other end of the master bedroom is a big closet. I'm planning on leaving half of it normal and doing some kind of shelving in the other half. The master bathroom is off to the right.

Below is the entry, there is a nice big closet which I really like. When you walk in you enter to the living room/nook/kitchen...it's all nice and open!

The rest of this post is after the jump because it's a little long!

Here is the kitchen! Obviously I'm getting a fridge and I'm planning on replacing the range also. You can't really tell in the photo but the counter has a nice overhang so I'm going to put some stools there instead of having a table and chairs in the nook area off to the left. I'm also thinking about painting the cabinets white...I dunno. Do you guys like that idea?

Here is another view of the kitchen. You can see the dishwasher on the right side, it works so I'm leaving it...one less thing I have to buy.

Behold...fugly counter tops. Unfortunately for me I can't afford to replace these right now so I'm going to clean the grout to make it white again and then just live with the fug until I can afford to change it. I don't even know what is going on with the backsplash....

Here is a view of the living room and out onto the patio. I'm planning on putting my couch on the wall on the left and my tv on the wall on the right. The patio is a nice size, apparently I didn't take more photos of it. On the left side there is a 3 x 9 strip of dirt, I'm going to rip out the rogue plants in there and put in artificial grass for Degen. Not sure what I'm going to do with the rest of the patio yet, it's ugly tile right now so I'm considering just putting an outdoor rug over it until I can change it.

Below is the master bath, it's pretty small but I can live with it. The shower isn't my favorite...along with the kitchen its on my "fix when I can afford it" list. I will for sure be getting new shower doors though, like ASAP...luckily they shouldn't be too expensive.

Below is the nook off of the kitchen and living room. This is probably meant to be a dining area but I'm going to make it into the Degen corner. He has a little "house" that he sleeps in when I'm at work that I'll put over there along with some kind of storage for his toys and maybe some shelving.

Next is the 2nd bedroom, aka the polish room! I think I'm also going to put a little vanity in here somewhere since there isn't room in my bathroom for all my makeup and whatnot.

This is the closet in the polish room, I think my Helmers might live in here.

Last up is the spare bathroom, its a little bigger than the master but not huge. It has a shower/tub combo that you can't see in the photo. I'm planning on changing out the vanity in here. It's an inexpensive fix that will make it look a billion times better. Other than that I'll be fixing up the rest when I win the lotto, or find a rich man to marry (a girl can dream right?)

Overall I bought this condo because I see a lot of potential in it....just changing out the flooring and putting new paint on the walls will instantly change it for the better. I've seen other units in the complex with this floor plan that have been upgraded and they look amazing! I'm excited to make it mine as I go.

Not pictured (because I forgot) is the hallway which has a little utility closet where the AC & furnace live along with a linen closet!

  5. Congrats! The condo looks great! I love that you have what looks like a pretty spacious patio too. That makes a huge difference - especially for a dog owner. Overall, lots of potential there - a great buy!

  7. Happy for you! You're so lucky you can slowly paint/fix it and stay at your parents house in the meantime. I love the idea of painting the kitchen cabinets. Def would update it. I've seen white, off white, and black and they have all looked fabulous! I'd recommend removing the doors and spray painting them to avoid brush lines. But you already know all about those!
Congrats on your new home! And Degen's new home too!
PS...love your blog. I read it every single day. ❤️

  9. I feel you on the real estate prices. Out of my high school friend group in New Jersey, only one that still lives there has his own apartment and we're all around 26. This looks nice thought definitely has potential!

  10. Congratulations! Having your own place feels like nothing else, it's wonderful. You could put some planter boxes on the patio since you have some nice sun! It might not be crazy expensive to change the kitchen cabinet fronts but in the meantime, white would be cute. It will be fun to see the changes happening. Thanks for sharing with us.

How very exciting! Nice layout and plenty of room for Degen. It will be lovely. Paint always makes such a difference! And I do love white kitchen cabinets - crisp and bright (my appliances are also white). Then you can change the color accents any way you like and it always looks fresh! Best of luck Jen and I look forward to the progress. The polish room....I'm all a tingle just thinking about that one! lol

  16. It looks nice! The hubs and I were watching house hunters where they got a house by the beach for $1 million and it was around 800 sq ft😩 Insane! I can't wait to see how you fix it up! I'm looking forward to the chevron wall!

  17. Congrats! Have fun making it yours!

  18. Your place is adorable!! There really is a ton of potential there and you're absolutely right, some new flooring, paint and functioning window coverings will take you a long way!!

As for the cabinets, I like the light wood color, but it's hard to tell in the photo what condition they are in. If they are in good shape and look nice, I would probably leave them and do the white paint when they start looking shabby. I think it will look good either way, but you can save yourself some work now if they aren't in bad shape!

My house is a tiny 925 sq ft and it's a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom. We chose it because it was what we could afford, big enough for just the two of us, and only needed paint and some minor things done to it. You're spending so much on the house, it's hard to be able to fix things up too! I am SO envious of your counter top and backsplash that you hate - mine is powder blue! ICK! They just glued a few flat pieces of the powder blue formica to the wall to create the backsplash. It's horrid! But, I don't have the cash to replace it, so I just live with it. Yours don't look so bad!!!

    Congrats!!!! :D

  19. congrats on the place! a little love and u can make this place beautiful! Also, it's so much better to own your own home instead of throwing money away on rent! :)

Your condo looks lovely: can't wait to see the "after pics" and have a look at what you have done to the place! Oh...and perhaps a new toilet seat....the old one looks a bit * I don't know* weird?!

  22. Happy, happy, joy, joy! I'm excited for you! It's nice that you bought a fixer--I think it's the only way to go because you can customize it to your liking. Congrats!

  24. Looks nice! I would advise against white cabinets, only because you'll
have to regularly wash them! We rent so we can't do anything about it,
but we have white cabinets and drawers. Once a month or so I have to
wipe down all the drawers and cabinets because they get so filthy! Part
of it is probably because we cook just about every night of the week,
but still. White would definitely brighten everything up but I would be
more inclined to keep the wood or get something darker and paint the
    walls a brighter color!

  25. Congrats on your new home! Stressful and rewarding all at once. The countertops don't look bad in the photo. The cabinet and wall colors clash with the brown tones in the counter. White cabinets remind me of my grandmother's home. I love them!

  26. wooow... there's no place like HOME, hope you'll make it :) congrats :)

  27. Can't wait to see what you do with the place! It's always fun to start from scratch and see the transformation!

  28. New toilet seats were the first thing I bought lol

  29. Congratulations!
Places like Home Depot that sell flooring and kitchen appliances may have "treatments" you can use to get the surface of tile in kitchen and bathrooms back to original look, maybe with a rental steaming machine. For the kitchen cabinets, before you apply coats of paint, you might want to check out what is involved in stripping the finish so you could re-stain to a finish (including white) that you do like. (Usually there is just a hinge pin you pull up to remove the doors.)
    Enjoy!!!

  30. Congrats Jen! I know what you mean about housing prices - they are pretty high where I'm at too. Which is why I rent - which also isn't very cheap here. I can't wait to see the after pics and I am in love with dark floors so that particular bit of info perked my ears up!

  31. Congrats on your new place! I'm looking forward to seeing the transformation, especially the polish room! We just bought a house about six months ago, I totally know what you're going through. So many projects! Good luck, and take your time. =)

  32. That's crappy! It's ridiculous to rent here also, it's actually cheaper for me to buy than to rent. Crazy!

  33. I actually picked up something like that at Home Depot over the weekend, hopefully it will help it look better!

  34. congratulations. and happy renovatings!! can't wait to see what your creative mind will come up with and the finished transformation :)

  36. Congratulations on your new home! I could relate to your comment about what the same amount of money can buy in Texas. I am originally from Texas and I now live in a two bedroom flat in London that is smaller than yours, but I console myself with the fact that at least I don't have to live in Texas :-)

  37. Congratulations! It's really nice and yeah, I live in Cali too and I agree, it's miserably expensive - but we got great weather! It's awesome you have a little yard for Degen too. Looking forward to seeing the after pics. The flooring sounds wonderful (I hate carpeting, it's so unsanitary and impractical for owning animals.

  38. congratulations to you! it always takes some work to make any place "yours" but that's half the fun!

  39. I was wondering last evening how your "updating" came out in your new home. Did the solutions help get rid of the "eyesores?"
    Happy Holidays and New Year!
