Essie Starry Starry Night Swatch & Review

Hi guys! Today I have Starry Starry Night from Essie to share with you. This is the new version, not the older more sought after version (sadly I don't own that one). Recently Essie released their Retro Revival Collection which brought back 6 of Essie's "iconic" shades. Everyone pretty much lost their mind when Starry Starry Night was announced as one of the 6 shades. For as long as I can remember SSN has been one of the more HTF polishes going for big bucks on eBay. People have been asking Essie to bring it back for years.

Unfortunately this new version isn't really even comparable to the original. The new version is a different shade of blue and lacks the same type of glitter. The glitter in the original SSN was smaller and included "diamond dust" which gave a ton of dimension to the polish, the new version just has one size of silver glitter and its a bit on the sparse side when applied on the nail. While the new version of Starry Starry Night is pretty its kind of ridiculous for Essie to release this saying they brought back the original. If you want to see a comparison of the original with the new version check out this post from Pointless Cafe. If you're looking for polishes a bit closer to what Starry Starry Night originally was I'd recommend KBShimmer Carpe Denim (larger glitters but gives a similar feel to the original SSN) or Colors by Llarowe Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Pointless Cafe also shows comparisons of those 2 polishes with the original Starry Starry Night.

The formula of the new Starry Starry Night wasn't the greatest. It was a little bit thick and almost gooey, especially on the second coat. The first coat went on streaky but it was opaque for me on the second coat due to the thickness of the polish. I usually don't talk about wear time on my blog since I don't wear stuff long enough for it to chip but this chipped on me on the first full day of wear, which was a bummer. I used 2 coats plus top coat for the photos below.

Overall the new version of Starry Starry Night is pretty but if you are planning on buying it to finally cross Starry Starry Night off your wish list you will be disappointed. The new version of Starry Starry Night and the rest of the Retro Revival Collection is available now at drugstores and Ulta. Price varies depending on where you buy.

  1. Its a pretty deep sparkly blue.

  2. I just bought it, too. Bummer it's not the same but there's pretty much no hope of finding the original so I will have to settle.

  3. Hi Jen, ugh, so disappointing for everyone! But guess what -- I bought OPI "Give Me Space" at Christmas time, and while it's not a dupe, it's close and (to me) actually prettier -- more blue, less black. And of course OPI's brush and formula are more to my personal liking, too. The other Essie Retro Revival shades were, to me, also underwhelming. Great idea, poorly executed! =(

  4. This is BS in my opinion. I was truly excited to finally get this polish since I missed it the first time it was out but since it is not the same, what is the point? These companies keep doing this and it just angers people. Also, I'm disappointed to hear the formula is that bad. I really like Essie polishes but this just sounds awful. Thanks for your honest opinion. It sounds like you're not the only one who thinks this is bad.

  5. Thanks so much for the link love! It does look amazing on you but that formula though. Bummer.

  6. I found it very goopy and hard to apply. It chipped badly on me on the third day. I am new to painting nails, and thought I had done something wrong. Unfortunately it was the polish and not me. It may not be the same color as the original, which is too bad. What really irritated me was paying for the polish and going to all the time and trouble of polishing them for three days. Don't think I'll be putting it on again. Of course, since I'm new to polishing I'm not fast at applying polish. :-)
