First Impression Friday: Rainbow Honey

Happy Friday! Today for First Impression Friday I have some Rainbow Honey goodies to share with you. Rainbow Honey has been on my radar for a long time, I'm actually kind of surprised I hadn't already tried them. They offer a ton of items in their shop, everything from nail polish to nail care and bath & body products. I couldn't decide what to buy so I ended up buying their January Mystery Bag.

The Rainbow Honey Mystery Bags come in a few different options, you can get the full sized version with just nails or just body stuff. You can also get a mini sized version or a bag that has a little of everything. I ended up getting the full sized version of the bag with a little of everything in it. Things like this are a great way to try out a brand. I believe they offer these as a one time purchase or you can subscribe and get them each month.

I placed my order on 1/11/16 and my packaged arrived to me on 1/19/16. While I did get my package pretty quickly it was outside of their stated turn around time. They listed 24-48 hours to ship and mine shipped out 5 days after I placed my order. Its not really a big deal to me since I still got the package quickly but its something to be aware of if you're in a time crunch or something of that nature. I did end up having customer service issues with Rainbow Honey not associated with the shipping, those will be mentioned towards the end of the post. The mystery bag was mailed in a bubble mailer and then all the actual products were in a cloth bag with the Rainbow Honey logo stamped on it. It was a really nice touch, in my opinion. Inside the cloth bag the everything was inside of bubble wrap bag and there was a sheet that detailed everything included in the bag. Check out everything in my mystery bag after the jump!

Forestal is a green matte creme. I really like this shade of green, its a bit greyed out which is something I don't already own in a matte finish. The formula was ok, it was sheer but buildable and it dried quickly. I used 3 coats for the photos below.

Caramel Forest is a glitter topper with orange, black, gold and white large glitter along with small blue/purple shimmer in a clear base. The formula was ok, it was very glitter dense but you do have to place the glitter a bit since it tended to bunch up together. I used 1 coat plus top coat over Forestal for the photos below.

Planet M is a pink base with blue/purple glass fleck like shimmer. The formula was good, it was a nice consistency and easy to apply with great opacity. I used 2 coats plus top coat for the photos below.

Next up is the nail care/bath & body products I got in my bag.  The first item was a Body Mist in the scent Caramel Forest. This isn't a huge size but its definitely enough to let you try out the product for a fair amount of time and know if you like it. Overall I liked this, the scent wasn't too heavy and it lasted a comparable amount of time as my Bath & Body Works Body Mists do.

Next was 3 large foil packets of Whipped Soap in the scent Pate de Pistache. I looked up videos of other peoples mystery bags and it seems like everyone else got 3 different scents so I'm not sure why I got 3 of the same, but whatever. These were pretty generous, they each held a lot of product and 1 probably would have been enough for me. I was intrigued by this product, I don't think I've ever tried whipped soap like this before. It was the consistency of a whipped body butter and it lathered really nicely once I added some water onto my hands. I really enjoyed the scent of this, it smelled sweet and the scent stayed nicely on my hands. Unfortunately I ended up not really caring for how it made my hands feel after using it. It gave them that squeaky clean kind of feeling and left them pretty dry. While I loved the scent and the soap worked well as far as lathering up goes its not something I would purchase on my own.

Degen is a creeper

The last 2 items were a Lip Balm and Lip Scrub in the scent Cucumber Melon. I've really been enjoying the lip balm so far, its not quite as good as my current favorite (Sunny's Body Products Lip Balm) in terms of lasting power but its a good one to throw in my purse for on the go.

The Lip Scrub is where I have issues. Mine literally has zero sugar in it, its just a balm. I thought I was crazy and dug around in it with an orange stick before realizing that it really didn't have any sugar. I ended up emailing Rainbow Honey asking about it, since I'm new to their products I didn't know if I was maybe supposed to do something to make it work or what. About 3 days later I got a response from Rainbow Honey saying that yes, their last batch of this scent appeared to have less sugar than normal (aka none?) and they offered me a replacement in a different scent. I ended up declining a replacement because their response put me off.

It seemed to me from the way their email was worded that they were aware of the batch problem prior to my email and just decided to keep it to themselves unless you emailed asking about it. In my response declining the replacement I mentioned that it was odd that they were aware of the problem and didn't let customers who may be affected know. As of typing this they haven't responded to that email, sent out an email to customers (that I am aware of) or made any mention of it on their social media. I find the whole thing kind of troubling to be honest. I have received emails from makers about a fading pigment a year after purchasing a polish so knowing of a problem (especially a small one like this) and keeping it to yourself is a big issue for me.

Overall I enjoyed most of what I got in my mystery bag but I will not purchase from Rainbow Honey in the future and wouldn't recommend the brand based on my experience. There are so many fantastic indie brands out there, if I can't trust Rainbow Honey to be up front with such a small problem like a lip scrub missing the scrub how could I ever trust them to acknowledge a problem like fading polish or curling glitter? Know what I mean?

  1. It really is too bad about the CS because as you say, if they can't be trusted to be upfront with small problems, then how could a customer trust them about bigger issues? The polishes are nice, nothing really especially unique though in my opinion. The body mist is really what sounds great to me though.

  2. I tried this box for 6 months a couple years ago. I was not a fan and am saddened to see they haven't stepped up their game.

  3. Thanks for sharing your experience! I've enjoyed lots of Rainbow Honey polish in the past, but I'd be just as concerned as you were regarding the sugar scrub/balm issue. Hopefully they will read this and decide to let people know about it.

Thank you for such an honest review (I know you are always honest but still). Looks like a great mix of items in your bag. Customer service is such an important part of a company and so many indies have excellent cs so I probably won't try them.

  6. I wasn't happy with the first bag I got from RH either. The colors were meh, weak and watery, and included no glitters or anything fun as I expected, especially after I heard online that they supposedly had nice glitter toppers and such. Not that I got anyway, plus shipping took forever, then they emailed about some delay or other and offered a discount code I didn't use, since I didn't like thier limited selections, plus by then I was confused as to why what I got didn't look like what the monthly selections were. They're overpriced and overhyped for what I got. I cancelled immediately. There are so many other WAY better indies out there I'd rather spend my cash on who deserve the love, as you say. Just not RH.

  8. I hope so but I'm not holding my breath for that happening, unfortunately :/

  9. Interesting & that's not promising. Glad its not just me here though and also, if they are only half-a$$ing the effort, what do they expect? Too much competition these days to not care about what they're putting out as well as their shoddy CS. That plus the internet nowadays will kill a company overnight. Get what you give and all that.

  10. I was a big RH fan last year but shipping would take forever, items would be missing, colours are not represented by swatches and my biggest problem is my RH glitter polishes have mostly dried out. I have lots of polish and it's definitely a RH formula problem. A bunch are unused and when I'm paying $10 plus shipping and the Canadian exchange it just doesn't end up being worth it anymore :(

  12. Thanks Stacy! I'm glad that you like them as much as I like them! It's been fun trying out so many new to me brands!

  13. I have received the mini mixed mystery bag for probably a couple years now, and many of them were pretty good. I was often impressed with one or more items in the bag.. I've received full sized polishes, base or top coats and cuticle oils sometimes.

The only reason I didn't get this months bag is after my debit card changed and I didn't get around to updating it. Not because I didn't like the products, I do. But similar to two years of Ipsy, the products do pile up (my bad for not using them, too much incoming).

Admittedly, I never had to contact customer service, so that is something I can't speak to. I don't care for this months polishes, but I personally will definitely consider signing back up down the road.

  14. The first color of polish is so pretty!! :) That is no good not getting an actual scrub in the lip scrub.

  15. Thanks so much for your honesty about both the products and the service. I was curious about the company so I went to their site. Site message said the shop was closed and would reopen next week. Maybe others didn't like their customer service either.

  16. I've been getting the mini monthly bag from Rainbow Honey for approximately a year. I have had to reach out to their customer service on a couple occasions and I've never gotten a response like that from them.
Their supplier for their larger mini bottles was out of stock, so they have been sending out 2 full size polishes (instead of 3 mini's) in their mini mystery bags for the past couple months. They sent out an email about it shortly after the first bag was sent with the prior 'smaller' bottles, explaining why. They did a really good job making it up to the customers instead of just using the smaller bottles.
I also had a product that was messed up in transit, one of their new bath soaks that split in the bag. When I sent an email, I got a response from the owner and they said they had no extras of it (since it was the test/trial for the product) and she sent me a $5 dollar gift card for replacement.
One big thing to remember about these bags is that they test products and request opinions on them. They're less 'Mystery Box' typical and more 'testing subscription'. They -WANT- your opinions on the products. They need to know what works and what doesn't, so that they can improve the products.

  17. I'm glad you've had a positive experience with them, however I don't think their response to my problem was appropriate at all. Its great if they are using these bags as a way to test out new products but that doesn't give them a pass for clearly missing an ingredient, knowing about it, then keeping it to themselves instead of making those with the product aware of the issue so they can rectify it.

  18. I'm part of a group for them on Facebook and I've been seeing a lot of similar comments. It sadly looks like it's a bit hit and miss on the customer service. I'm not sure if they just grew too big too quickly for them, are overwhelmed, or what. :(
I was one of those who suggested RH for you to review and I'm really bummed that you had such a bad experience with them. I love their polishes and I wanted to see them swatched as nicely as you swatch polishes.
I wonder how many in the 'batch' were messed up? Come to think of it, I don't even think I checked mine, as I still had some from a prior batch of lip scrub, so I gave it to a coworker. I'll have to see if she used it or not.

  20. Thank you for the honest review! Bad customer service really puts me off. I love the pink polish but won't be buying from this brand.

  21. They've closed monthly for over a year now to periodically catch up on stock- it's nothing new or particularly significant.

  22. Love the pink one but others are also great :)
