First Impression Friday: Kiko

Happy Friday! Anyone have fun plans for the weekend? I have a nice 3 day weekend so I'm planning on tackling part of my kitchen renovation. I'm finally getting my counters replaced in a couple of weeks and my current cabinets are in good shape but the color doesn't really match my aesthetic so I'm going to paint them white. It should be interesting to say the least since I've never painted cabinets before. Mostly I'm just excited to get my kitchen on the way to being done. I've had the counters, backsplash, new sink and new faucet for a long time now and have had to push off the installation because of my Grandma being sick and passing away then Degen getting hurt.

Today for First Impression Friday I'm going to be talking about Kiko! This was an in store purchase so I can't speak to shipping or their website but you can buy polish on there if you don't have a Kiko store near you. Kiko is easily the brand thats been on my need to try list for the longest, they are a European brand so getting them in the states was pretty much impossible for years. Kiko started opening stores in the US about 2 years or so ago and finally expanded somewhat near me. The closest store isn't actually that close but I happened to be going up to LA in January and there was a mall on the way that had a Kiko store!

Kiko doesn't only sell polish, they also sell makeup! The store I went to was awesome, it was bright and clean, really well laid out. The ladies working were really helpful (though a little overzealous with the up-selling but what else is new). I ended up picking up a few polishes and a couple nail care items! Check out everything I got after the jump!

479 is a taupey tan base with a strong gold shimmer. The shimmer is nice and strong with this one, you can see it out in the sun and in lower lighting! The formula was good, it was easy to apply and had good opacity. I used 2 coats for the photo below.

484 is a peach/orange with silvery pink shimmer. The shimmer is more subtle in this polish but not subtle to the point of invisible. The formula was good, it was a nice consistency and had really good opacity. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

522 is a blackened base with blue shimmer. This one dazzles a little more in the bottle than it does on the nail unfortunately. The shimmer doesn't stand out quite as well as I was hoping it would. The formula was good, it was sheer but it built easily and was easy to apply. I used 3 coats for the photos below.

693 is a teal matte creme. The formula was really nice on this one, it was a touch thick but in a way that made application easy and the opacity was great! I used 2 coats but would probably only use 1 in the future. The only draw stains like crazy, even with 2 coats of base coat :(

Next are the cuticle/hand care items I got!

I picked up the scrub and care cuticle care pen. Unfortunately I pretty much hated this product. It smells awful, like diluted and stinky sunscreen. I also am not sure what was scrubby about this, I mean I guess you could push your cuticles back with the slanted tip but it didn't work very well for that.

I also picked up the Intensive Hand Gloves. For whatever reason I didn't take a photo of the actual gloves (good job Jen) but they were gauze-y on the inside and the outside was a more plastic-y material. I put these on for about 10 minutes and then rubbed in the extra product left on my hands after taking them off. These were just meh for me. I didn't feel like they didn't anything fantastical, like I would get the same results with a good lotion and cotton gloves which would be cheaper than buying this in the long run.

Overall I enjoyed the polishes I picked up but the nail/hand care was a miss for me. The one thing I didn't care for about the polishes is that the bottles aren't the same, Kiko had a bunch of different types of polishes and all of them were in different shapes of bottles, stuff like that drives me nuts.

Everything was really reasonably priced, I no longer have my receipt but everything was under the $5 mark I believe. You can buy Kiko online at

  1. Being a European customer for quite some time, I can tell you ordering online may turn out to be no fun. When I ordered online the last time, the polishes where hardly wrapped at all and one bottle was broken, spilling polish all over the other bottles. Getting back my money was a long fight!
Therefore, I just pick up things in store by now - often they have good offers so you do not have to pay the full prize and they have many great shimmer polishes (some say Kilo 497 is a dupe to Chanel's Taboo) which even makes you bear the aweful staff.

  2. A nice first impressions of this brand Kiko!

Yes, a very nice first impression review. Especially like those 1st 2. I was very sorry to hear about your grandmother, that's hard. But poor Degen I hadn't heard about. Hope he's okay now. Good luck with the cabinets - that's quite a job!!

  4. I love Kikos colors and prices. Longevity wasn't terrific for me, not a huge issue as I change my color frequently anyway. I've not experimented with different base/top coats so there is still potential for greatness.

  5. He's doing great now, wouldn't even know anything had happened to him!

  6. I really like all of the Kiko polishes I have. I was introduced to them through my nail mail pal in Germany. They ended up having a great Black Friday sale and I ended up going a little ham. I couldn't help myself...I mean the cupcake textured polishes were only $0.90!! The shimmers are great though. I just hated having to look up the name of each of them. I need more than a number in my spread sheet! XD

  7. This Italian brand has lost lots of interest from me since they've replaced their squared bottles. Now they have pretty much almost the rounded squared ones and their boring shades :((

  8. Kiko is one of my favorite polish brands. My first order was sent to me by a French friend. I loved the formula. I only buy the one style of their polish, their regular nail lacquer. Since they have gone online in the U.S., I have ordered several times, when that polish line was on sale, and have received all my polishes intact and in a timely manner. I love this polish!

  9. I have some KIKO polishes and I just love them! They have a dupe for the famous Chanel Taboo, it's KIKO 497. I was able to get my hands on three shades of their limited edition textured polishes from the Real Glare collection, released on 2014, and the're wonderful! I just love textured polishes!
I wish this brand were easier to get in Brazil. They announced the opening of a store here, but it's far from where I live.

  10. I have wanted to try Kiko for ages-- glad you are reviewing some! I really like the matte polish, but ugh about staining. And double ugh about different bottles!! Boo. I wish they would open a store in my area!
